Nothing happens by accident. -Chuck Knox ORIOLE FOOTBALL SUFFERS A TOUGH LOSS Homecoming festivities kept Springville families busy all of last week. Last minute dance preparations kept most students busy all of last week. The looming rematch with the Midland Eagles kept Coach Martin & the guys focused all of last week. The game had a lot of hype behind it & when the fans started rolling in, the excitement was building. Whether you were there to see old friends & alumni, or who would be crowned this year’s King and Queen, or what was on the concession stand menu, or the new clothing available through this year’s booster sales— you had to have had a good time absorbing the atmosphere. 7:30 was kick off time & KGAN came early to preview the game, capture Coach Martin’s strategy & high light the vocals of our fantastic cheer leaders. And they caught a pretty good ball game too. While the Orioles fell 52-27, the score is in no way indicative of the tempo, style & closeness of the game. Midland would be the first to score & the first to fail on an extra point attempt. They led 6-0 but not for long. A mere 15 seconds later, Elias Nissen ran the kick back to the Eagle 20 & on 3rd down he punched it in to tie it up. Sophomore kicker Brian Allsup nailed the PAT to put us up 7-6 & pump up the crowd. Coach Martin once again showed his backbone as he called for an onside kick—but the Eagles recovered. The Oriole “D” held though, & forced a punt. Nissen returned it for what may be the “longest” return in history as he cut back & forth across the field, eventually finding the end zone. When I say the longest return, I mean it literally, I think he was running for 60 seconds or more. A holding call brought it back though & with it, took away some of the momentum. Springville would end up punting & Drake Coonrod laid out a beauty, pinning Midland on the 7 yard line. Midland called another pass play, got behind our defense & scored another 6. Their failed conversion had them sitting with a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. I am thinking to myself, after two HUGE returns by Nissen, they’d be crazy to kick to him again—well, they weren’t crazy. They squib kicked i t to Coonrod who simply made them pay by running it all the way back for another Oriole TD. We failed on our PAT & settled for a 13-12 lead. This was the start of the see-saw part of the game, Midland scored on its next possession, & then it was all field position for the remainder of the half which ended with Midland leading 26-13. The O’s scored on their first possession of the 2nd half when Nissen (I think they forgot his jersey #) once again ran one in . With the PAT we cut into their lead & made it 26-20. That lead didn’t last long however as the Eagles went to the air again, picked up a nother TD & tacked on the 2 point conversion. Down 34-20, Hulett returned the ensuing kick (they remembered Nissen wears #40) out to the Eagle 35 & Nissen punched it in on a 4th & 1 call. Allsup kicked the extra point & again pulled the O’s within one score to bring the crowd back into the game. With a 7 point ball game late in the third quarter and a defensive stance that forced an Eagle punt, the O’s had momentum in their favor. Then the unthinkable, a Springville turnover. It gave the Eagles the ball on the Oriole 20 yard line. Trailing 34-27 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Oriole defense found itself with their rear ends on the goal line. The Eagle’s quarterback slung a pass into double coverage that gave them a 40-27 lead. Hulett’s sack denied the 2 point conversion which kept the game within two scores. The O’s would fail to find their way however, having to go to the air on 3rd & long, & giving up field position as they battled the ticks on the clock. While the loss had to sting, Coach Martin & his team had a game plan that was well thought out. With so much of Midland’s success riding on #7’s back, had you told me we’d hold him to 70 yards, I would have predicted an Oriole victory to be sure. I told the guys that if we keep Leonard under 100 we had a great chance at winning. However, since we put so much time into rush defense we did not work on pass defense much which came back to hurt us. Their offensive passing game was very good and they made some catches with us playing some tight coverage. It boiled down to them making and executing the big plays and we did not”, said Coach Martin. Coonrod led the Orioles in rushing with 97 yards on 15 carries. Nissen tacked on another 63 on the ground. Senior QB and reigning “King” Zach Scriver threw for 78 yards on the night. So what’s next? A very good 1-3 Oriole team heads off to face a very good 3-1 Preston team on Friday. Coach Martin says, “Keys to Friday will be first and foremost, control the controllable (turnovers and penalties). Then we have to execute our offensive and defensive game plan better than in weeks past. They are going to be disciplined so we have to be even more careful. If we limit their running game and work on our pass defense, it will be a very competitive game”. The kicking game is up in the air as Allsup suffered a broken thumb and senior Brandon Mysak continues to nurse a sore back. Program the GPS for a trip east to Preston. The O’s do not disappoint! Coonrod rushed for 97 yards and 1 touch down Mysak “just” missed the block on this punt Tyler “Stewie” Stewart fights through a face mask

JV FOOTBALL WINS AND WINS AGAIN

The Oriole JV football team played two games in just 4 days and won them both. On Friday they celebrated a Homecoming victory against the Cedar Valley Christian Huskies and on Monday they traveled to Wyoming to crush the Midland Eagles. The boys have four days of practice to prepare for a sure to be tough match up against Preston on Friday.

CROSS COUNTRY Springville Cross Country Coach Steve Pershing provided an update on our cross country team. The Springville-Central City cross country team had another day of impressive performances at the Stormin' Pointer Invitational in Center Point. Despite a second place finish, Arden Betzer set a new girl's team record of 14:56 for the 4K distance. Angie Hoogland had her best performance of the season, passing three competitors in the final 1000 meters to finish 5th overall in a personal best time of 15:57. For the varsity boys, Raymond Colony had a solid performance finishing 14th overall in a time of 19:00. The middle schoolers had their first opportunity to compete as a team and showed that the future is very bright. The girl's finished 3rd, and the boy's finished 5th out of the 16 teams participating. The girls were led by 8th grader Amber Decker who again won in impressive fashion with a time of 13:10. She was followed by Sophia Wilson, Macy Wright, Monica Cruise, and Izzie Betzer. The boys were led by 7th graders PJ Gorman and Levi Flitsch, and 8th graders Brady Barner, Carter Gillmore, and Jacob Loehr. The team's next meet is at the Anamosa Invitational Saturday morning at the Jones County Central Park. Great job O’s.

MIDDLE SCHOOL O’S FALL TO MIDLAND

The Junior High Oriole football team had a little bus trip to Wyoming on Monday to face the Midland Eagle’s. Springville failed to make it to the end zone and fell to Midland, 20-0. The Oriole’s are now 1-2 and have one week to prepare for another road game. They’ll head up to Central City next Tuesday to play the Wildcats—

who they defeated earlier in the season at home.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick-name. The Chinook Sugarbeeters are located in Chinook, MT, population 1500. The school features colors of orange and black and their football team plays 8 man, they even won their state championship last year. They earned their name from the communities early days when a large sugarbeet factory once operated in their town. The Beeter Booster club sells merchandise including shirts with “You can’t stop the beets” and “Beeter Pride” printed on them, or my favorite—caps that don “Remember Your Roots” .
