So is lack of confidence. ~ Vince Lombardi ORIOLES DOMINATE CENTRAL CITY, WIN 48-12 Senior quarterback Zach Scriver threw for 159 yards and Sophomore everything, Elias Nissen ran for 202 yards on Friday as the Orioles tallied 418 yards of offense to the Wildcats 177. Central City managed just 20 yards on the ground as Springville’s defense held them and forced punt after punt in a game that was perhaps one sided, but exciting to be a part of. From the opening kick, which was a Brian Allsup touchback, Springville controlled the ball, the clock and field position. Coach Martin set the tone for the game on the Oriole’s first possession. Facing 4th and 3 on their own 37, he went for itand Nissen picked it up. The next play from scrimmage was another Scriver to Nissen hand off that ended with an Oriole touchdown and was the first of many on the evening. The famed “Tractor Bowl” followed a script that was fairly redundant—Central City would punt and Springville would score. Junior, Selby Ballantyne gave Scriver all the time in the world as he put on an air show. And his targets made for some great catches. Senior, Brandon Mysak had 2 catches for 70 yards, one of which was a 50 yard touchdown. Junior, Drake Coonrod had 2 catches for 34 yards, one of which was a 25 yard touchdown. And Junior, Jake Hulett had 3 catches for 55 yards. Sophomore kicker, Brian Allsup was 6 of 7 on the night for PAT’s—heck, the kid was probably tired. Between kick offs to the Wildcat end zone, and extra points, he could have used a masseuse. Defensively, Senior, Nathaniel Randolph and Sophomore Tyler Stewart wreaked havoc all night long, and along with Hulett, the trio rushed their QB and tripped up their backs. At the end of the game, celebrations included the trophy of course, shared with all the fans and families. Coach Martin was “real excited” for the kids. “We talked all week about this being a game we can compete in. I am ecstatic for the guys, but the season isn’t based on this game. We need to carry it over to the Midland game”. And Coach Martin is correct, the 4-0 Midland Eagles visit Allison Field Friday night for a district match-up that coincides with the Oriole Homecoming celebration. Varsity action starts at 7:30, it’s a game you won’t want to miss. If the defense can hold and our offense can move the ball, the O’s will move to .500 and hand the Eagles their first loss of the year. Above, Zach Scriver takes to the air on Friday in Central City. Below, Elias Nissen on 1 of 15 carries. Above, imagine looking at these 2 coming at you; Hulett & Stewart were in this kids face all night. ORIOLES DOMINATE CENTRAL CITY, WIN 48-12

Central City managed just 20 yards on the ground as Springville’s defense held them and forced punt after punt in a game that was perhaps one sided, but exciting to be a part of. VOLLEYBALL KICKS OFF SEASON WITH TRI-RIVERS WIN

Springville volleyball games, I have often thought, are more like rock concerts. There is the music of course (which is LOUD). There are the fans dressed up like students. There are the screams and cheers from either team, both on the court as well as the bench. It is an atmosphere unlike any other athletic event—should they ever dim the lights, we indeed would feel as if we were front row at an amphitheater. The Lady O’s opened up home action with a Tri-Rivers conference win against Maquoketa Valley Tuesday evening. Coach Eastman had the girls fired up and while it was a little more interesting than fans are used to—Springville won in 3 sets. Senior’s Megan Hall and C.J. Fitzgerald combined for 23 kills and 7 aces while team mates and fellow senior’s, Britt Oxley had 16 assists and Jamie Donaldson had 13 digs. The Lady O’s head up to Alburnett on Thursday for another conference match up and return home to host an Invitational Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY “RUNNING” STRONG Springville Cross-Country Coach, Steve Pershing reports in with this weeks team summary: “The Springville-Central City cross country team had an impressive performance at the Monticello meet Saturday. Arden Betzer dominated the girls varsity race, breaking her own course record in a time of 15:24. Angie Hoogland had a strong finish to take third place lowering her personal best time by nearly a minute. For the Middle School girls team, Amber Decker won the 2 mile race in a personal best time of 12:45 followed by Monica Cruise, Macy Wright, Hallie Corum, Sophia Wilson and Izzy Betzer all in the top 16 finishers. For the middle school boys, PJ Gorman set the team's 7th grade 2 mile record in a time of 13:14, and Brady Barner set the teams 8th grade 2 mile record in a time of 13:26. These two were followed by Levi Flitsch, Sam Lorimer, and Carter Gillmore who all finished in the top 15 finishers. The Springville-Central City cross country team continued its strong performances on Tuesday at the Starmont Invitational. Arden Betzer backed up her number 3 ranking in 1A by winning the girls varsity race by 16 seconds in a time of 15:11. Angie Hoogland finished 17th in the A division in a time of 17:31. Raymond Colony had a strong performance for the boys varsity finishing 7th in the A division in a time of 18:55. JV FOOTBALL LOOKS IMPRESSIVE The JV football team set the tone for Friday evening as they controlled a two quarter game against the Wildcats and won it 32-16. The score does not reflect the way in which the O’s marched up and down the field Friday evening. Springville led 24-0 at the end of the first quarter, with points coming from a safety and TD’s run in by Cody Blake and Tyler McDowell, sandwiched around a Sam Scriver pass to an all alone Kolton Markley in the end zone. The second quarter started with a Springville turn over that resulted in a Wildcat score. Greg Pauly scored on Springville’s next possession and the extra point conversion was run in by Cody Blake. The O’s gave up one more quick score at the end of the second quarter but still came out on top for their second win in as many games, this young season. You can catch them at home this Friday as they take on Cedar Valley Christian. Kick off is set for 5:00 sharp.

Left, Greg Pauly heads for the end zone. Right, Trevor Hulett snares himself a Wildcat sack.

HOMECOMING FUN Homecoming activities kicked off with the parade on Monday evening, followed by a pep rally in Machovec gymnasium. Oriole Pride was there to catch some of the highlights.

My senses say this is a bad idea—Ralph’s wife, Laurie Oxley agreed with me.

Brains vs Brawn—you be the judge as to who is who...

Above Coach Martin thanks the crowd & below the players present the Tractor Bowl trophy

Cheerleader Emmie Rommann helped pump up the crowd, even Coach Smyth, pictured below couldn’t help himself. He got into the action too—he’s actually quite graceful.

The seniors pictured below, kicked off the Jersey Auction, with an honest to goodness auctioneer—Springville alum, Brett Barner!
