BASKETBALL TEAMS FOCUS ON POST SEASON PLAY

While the regular season has come to an end, the road to the tournament is just beginning—and it originates in Springville. Both the girls and the boys will open up with first round games at home this year. The Lady O’s will host Midland on Thursday evening with a 7pm tip-off. The winner earns a trip to Preston on Valentine’s day to face the winner of the Bellevue Marquette/Preston game. Coach Sanderson and the girls team look to rebound from a hard fought loss to the Ed-Co Vikings on Monday evening. Springville led by as many as 7 points but the game was one of runs and Ed-Co was able to leave town with a 61-59 win. While a loss is a loss, there were many positives. Sarah “I can’t believe she’s a freshman” Matus put on another spectacular performance. She led the O’s with 19 points including five 3-point field goals. Those five raise her to the top of the record books as she passes Abbie Neff who previously held the record with 45 in a season—Matus sits at 50. And according to team coach, statistician and historian—

Nate Sanderson, Sarah is 13th on the list of 3-pointers for a season among all classes in the state, 4th on the list of 1A schools and is 1st among all underclassmen across the classes in Iowa. Coach Sanderson also adds that “Tracy Kilburg was the story of the night for the Orioles. Tracy finished the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She also made 5 of her 6 FT attempts (83%). She played with tremendous heart and poise at both ends of the floor”. Kilburg was also one shot

away from being the hero as she ended the game with an open look at a 3 that was in and out. With little time to rest, the 9-12 team prepare for the one and done part of the year. Thursday night, 7pm, DVR your shows and hit the gym. In boys action, Springville wrapped up its regular season on the road at Maquoketa Valley on Tuesday, suffering a 67-37 loss. The Wildcats had 3 guys in double figures while the Oriole’s struggled from the field. Elias Nissen finished with 15 points and Jake Hulett 10. With the loss, Coach Merritt and the team end the season with an overall record of 6-15. There is no time to think of the what ifs—Another Wildcat team awaits—the O’s will face Central City on Monday, at home. Get the dishes done early so you can join us.
