Before Finn wasa year old, the houndmix was the victim of ahit-and-run driver andwas left by the side ofthe road to die. Some-one rescued him andtook him to a veterinar-ian, who treated him.Unfortunately, one of hisback legs had to be am-putated.

No one claimedthe dog, so the vet puthis story on Facebook, where Melissa from Mis-

sions of Mercy, an ani-mal rescue group inHanover, Pa., saw thepost, contacted the vetand agreed to find Finna home.

Allison Stethers,Athens, Pa., will soonstart veterinary school, and she was worriedabout moving away fromher family. She thoughta dog to keep her com-pany would make thingseasier.

“I wanted Finn

as soon as I saw him onPetfinder,” she says.“Going through his pic-tures, I saw how muchhe had to go through tolearn to walk again, andmy heart went out tohim.” She arranged toadopt him.

Missing a legposes little problem forFinn. “Nothing holds himback,” Stethers says. “Iwas initially worriedabout the stairs in myhouse, but he runs up

and down them all day. Most people don't evennotice he's missing a legwhen he walks around.”

He loves peopleand, on their walks, getseveryone they pass topet him. He loves to playat full tilt, which probablyaccounts for why hissecond favorite activityis sleeping. Stetherssays that when anyonesays something aboutgoing to bed, Finn hearsthe word bed and is right

there, tag-ging along.

Shethinks thatwhen sheleaves forschool herfamily willmiss Finnmore thanthey missher. “Every-one ab-solutelyloves him.I’m just lucky I’m the one

who gets to call himmine.”

Good nutritionplays an important rolein how well you age.Eating a healthful diethelps keep your bodystrong and can help re-duce your risk for heartdisease, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis.Studies even show alink between healthfuleating and longevity.

"As we age, thebody becomes less effi-cient at absorbing somekey nutrients. Appetiteand taste can sufferfrom loss of sense ofsmell and taste or fromside effects of medica-tions. Bad teeth canmake some foods diffi-cult to chew or digest,"said Arthur Hayward,MD, a geriatrician andthe clinical lead physi-cian for elder care withKaiser Permanente'sCare Management Insti-tute. "So choosing foodscarefully is smart."Here are five tips to helpyou get the nutritionyour body needs:

1. Avoid emptycalories.

Foods withempty calories may con-tain very few vitaminsand minerals. "Conve-nience foods," such aspackaged snacks, chipsand sodas, are commonsources of empty calo-

ries. Avoid the "bad"carbs -- foods that havewhite flour, refined sugarand white rice.

2. Choose nutri-ent-rich foods.

Eat a variety offoods. The more youvary the foods you eat,the more vitamins, min-erals and other nutrientsyou get. For example:

* Eat lots offruits and vegetables --

Choosefresh,frozenor no-saltcannedvegeta-blesandfruits intheir

own juice or light syrup.* Eat foods with

protein -- Protein isfound in lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs andcheese, cooked beans, peanut butter and nutsand seeds.

* Get enoughcalcium and vitamin D --Calcium and vitamin Dare found in milk andmilk products, includingyogurt and cheese. They are also in greenleafy vegetables(spinach, kale, collardgreens) and tofu.

* Include foodshigh in vitamin B12 --After 50, the body pro-duces less gastric acidand absorbs less B12,which helps keep bloodand nerves vital. B12 isfound in milk, meat, poultry, fish and eggs.

* Eat high-fiberfoods -- This includesfruits, vegetables, cooked dried beans andwhole grains.

3. Drink plentyof fluids.

Drink plenty offluids -- enough so thatyour urine is light yellowor clear like water. Fiberand fluids help with con-stipation.

4. If your ap-petite is poor.

Try eatingsmaller meals, severaltimes a day, instead ofone or two large meals.Eating while socializingwith others may helpyour appetite. You mightalso ask about changingmedicines. Medicationcan cause appetite ortaste problems.

5. Eat softfoods.

As we approachour senior years, chew-ing food is sometimesdifficult. Choose low-sodium canned vegeta-bles or cooked fruits andvegetables. These areoften softer. Chop orshred meat, poultry orfish. Add sauce or gravyto the meat to help keepit moist.

For healthyrecipe ideas, check outKaiser Permanente'sFood for Health blog athttps://foodforhealth.kaiserpermanente.org.

In addition toeating a balanced diet, aim for 150 minutes ofphysical activity eachweek. Ten-minute ses-sions several times aday on most days arefine. For more informa-tion, visit kp.org andeverybodywalk.org. Forquestions or adviceabout a specific condi-tion, talk with your physi-cian.
