While it’s oftenoverlooked, good dentalhealth plays an impor-tant role in keeping olderadults healthy.

Poor oral healthcare can lead to the de-terioration of teeth andgums, infections in themouth that turn intomore serious ill-nesses such aspneumonia, and cardiovas-cular disease. And missingteeth is no ex-cuse to skipdental visits—experts say vis-iting the dentistis not just forteeth cleaning, but isalso an opportunity fordentists to screen fororal cancer, check den-ture fittings and helpwith many critical is-sues.

Dental care tipsoffered by the AmericanDental Association areessentially the sameacross all age groups.Adults are encouragedto:

• Brush theirteeth and gums at leasttwice a day with a fluo-ride-containing tooth-paste

• Floss at leastonce a day; preferablytwice a day to removefood particles in tough-to-reach places

• Visit their den-tist every six months fora routine cleaning andoral exam

• Use an anti-bacterial mouth rinse toreduce bacteria buildup.According to leading

dentists, however, thereare issues specific totreating the elderly thatshould be addressedand closely monitored.Dr. Scott Dickinson,Aspen Dental practiceowner from Pace, Fla.,has treated many elderlypatients and notes thatthe aging process canmake oral care more

challenging, particularlyas older adults losesome dexterity.

Dr. Dickinson of-fers these tips to avoid adecline in wellness dueto poor oral health care:

• Certain pre-scriptions can affect thehealing process of den-tal procedures. Olderadults who are pre-scribed medicine tokeep their bones strongmight run the risk of aslower healing processafter an extraction orcavity procedure. As apreventative measure, dentists need to consultwith the patient’s doctorabout their medicinesand check that it’s safeto go ahead with dentalwork.

• A dry mouthcan increase cavities. Some medicationscause dry mouth, whichis often seen among eld-erly patients. If themouth doesn’t produce

enough saliva, plaqueand food do not get nat-urally washed away, leading to a higher inci-dence of cavities.

• Ill-fitting den-tures can lead to poornutrition. Dr. Dickinsonoften sees patients whohaven’t maintained theirdentures, leading to apainful chewing experi-

ence. A quickdenture fittingcan alleviatethe pain andensure that thepatient canenjoy his or hermeals—andonce again getproper nutri-tion.

Receiv-ing dentures is a bigstep, and the dentistswho own and operateAspen Dental–brandedpractices are committedto pa tients’ completesatisfaction. Through arecently introduced Den-ture Money-Back Guar-antee program, patientshave the peace of mindknowing that if they aredissatisfied with their fullor partial ComfiDents®denture for any reason, their Aspen Dental prac-tice will refund the costof the denture, no ques-tions asked.

For more infor-mation, call 800-ASPEN-DENTAL (800-277-3633) or visit thewebsite at www.as-pendental.com.

Older adult pa-tients may sometimeslack the motor skills andsharp memory neededto properly care for theiroral hygiene.

Good dental care Is an important part ofa healthier life for seniors
