Cat C7 Engine. The Cat C7 usesCaterpillar’s breakthrough ACERT™Technology to meet exhaust emissionreduction standards. It features efficientair management, fuel delivery andelectronic control for high productivityand exceptional service life.

Engine Design. This four-stroke engineprovides efficient fuel combustion.Precise engineering and thoroughtesting assure durability, reliability andplenty of power. Built-in serviceabilityand excellent fuel economy loweroperating costs.

ACERT™ Technology. Caterpillaroptimizes engine performance whilemeeting EPA Tier 3 regulations.ACERT™ Technology reducesemissions during the combustionprocess by using advanced technologyin the air and fuel systems, inconjunction with integrated electronics.Caterpillar meets emission regulationsat the combustion source rather thanrecycling exhaust gases.

ADEM A4 Control Module. Controls thefuel injector solenoids to monitor fuelinjection. This system providesautomatic altitude compensation, and itwill not allow the engine to fire until ithas oil pressure, acting as cold startprotection and a form of pre-lube.

Turbocharger. The C7 features a wastegate turbocharger that provides highboost over a wider range, improvingengine response and peak torque, aswell as providing outstanding low-endperformance.

Improved HEUI Fuel Injectors. The CatC7 has proven high-pressure, directinjection fuel system electronicallymonitors operator demands and sensorsoptimize engine performance.

Maintenance. The C7 engine reducescosts and downtime with a 500-hour oilchange interval. Extended serviceintervals can save thousands of dollarsover the life of a machine. Machinesare equipped with Caterpillar highefficiency oil filters, whoserevolutionary design doubles efficiencywithout increasing the change interval.They provide clean oil to the engine,reducing wear on all lubricated surfacesand the chance of contamination.

Five-Speed Transmission. The fieldproven Cat power shift countershafttransmission easily matches enginepower to the load size and groundconditions. Electronic control makesfingertip controls possible, reducingoperator fatigue and improving comfort.

Gear Application. Gear ratios arecarefully designed to maximizeproductivity in specific cycle segmentsand under specific loads.

• Gear 1 provides highest rimpullcapability for heavy loadapplications.

• Gears 2, 3 for normal loads andhigher speed operations.

• Gears 4, 5 provide excellent emptyreturn and roading speeds.

Torque Converter. The large, heavy-duty torque converter maximizes theproductivity of the entire drive train.The torque converter is matched to theCat C7 engine for excellent rimpull andskidding performance. This lock-uptorque converter has proven itsdurability over thousands of hours ofpunishing loads.

Reduced Wheel Slip. Torque converterdirect drive capability, combined withthe lock-up differential, reduces wheelslip. This minimizes rutting and soildamage in straight-ahead pulls onweaker soil. In turn, it minimizes tirewear, component stress and fuelconsumption, reducing total operatingcosts.

Lock-up Clutch. The integral lock-upclutch allows the machine to operate inconverter drive for greater rimpull, ordirect drive for high efficiency haulingand faster travel speeds. Direct drivecapability allows up to 15% highertravel speeds when the lock-up clutch isengaged.

Auto Lock-up. The lock-up clutchautomatically engages according toground speed and engine speedconditions. This feature is handledelectronically and allows for increasedtravel speeds in the same gear.

Reduced Shifting. Torque multiplicationcapability of the torque converterreduces the need for the operator tocontinually shift the transmission tomaintain good skidder performance, asis required on competitive skidders.This reduces operator effort andimproves machine productivity.

Differential Locks. Normal operation iswith the differential locks in both axlesdisengaged, meaning the all four wheelsare free to drive independently. Lockinga differential forces both wheel on anaxle to turn in sync with each other.

Both front and rear differential locks areeasily engaged and disengaged with aconveniently located switch on the righthand console. Hydraulically actuateddifferential locks allows for on-the-goengagement or disengagement.

Front Axle. The 525C front axle featuresa pinion-mounted design and a thickerhousing, eliminating the need for thefront axle guard. The 525C uses durableductile iron for the center housing andleg housings.

Brake Components. Brake componentsare housed inside the axles, protectingthem from dirt, dust and wet groundconditions. Inboard brakes allow forsplash lubrication and cooling. They arevirtually maintenance free, and providereliable brake performance in the mostdemanding logging applications.

Oil Sump. Full axle-length oil sumpdelivers excellent lubrication and heatrejection for long component life.

Splash Lubricated. All axle componentsare splash lubricated. The outboardbearings are maintenance free.

Heat Rejection. Oil capacity providesexcellent heat rejection, ensuring properlubrication of all axle components.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. A loadsensing variable displacement pumpand pressure compensating systemcontinually monitor hydraulic powerrequirements, then provides powerbased on demand.

Lower Power Consumption. Thevariable displacement hydraulic pumpdraws engine power only when braking,steering, dozer or grapple actuationdemands flow or pressure. Thisconserves engine horsepower andincreases fuel efficiency.

Cooling Demands. Since the hydraulicpump runs only when needed, itgenerates less hydraulic system heat,allowing the cooling system to allocatemore capacity to the engine,transmission and torque converter.

Oil Cooler. The oil cooler was relocatedabove the radiator for better hydraulicoil cooling performance and to makeradiator cleanout easier.

Auto-Grab Feature. Auto-Grab,engineered by Caterpillar, constantlymonitors tong pressure and adjusts asneeded to securely hold grapple loadswhile skidding. It is easily activated ondemand by a switch located on theright-hand control lever.

Cat ToughGuard™ Hoses. CaterpillarXT®-3 ToughGuard™ hoses improvehose life in the grapple, arch, boom andacross the hitch. ToughGuard hoseshave been very successful in reducingearly hour hose failures. O-ring faceseals assure rock-solid connections thatmaintain pressure and reduce oil leaks.

Steering. Fully hydraulic control. Meetsthe following standards: SAE J1511OCT90, ISO 5010-1992.

Box-Section Construction. Caterpillardesigned and manufactured box sectionstructures set the industry standard forreliable, durable main frames. Extensivecomputer analysis and field-testingresulted in the design of the 525C. The525C has stronger hitch design andlarger bearings to neutralize anddistribute vertical and horizontal loadsover a larger surface area. Each framecan absorb twisting.

Absorbs Twisting and Shock Loads.Frames can absorb twisting and impactforces to provide a sound foundationand well-balanced system for the entirestructure.

Superior Balance. Low center of massand weight forward design createexcellent skidder balance.

Maneuverability. The 525C skidderprovides the tightest turning radius forsuperior maneuverability while stillmaintaining the excellent balancerequired for high capacity skidding.

Caterpillar Manufacturing. The frontand rear frames are robotically weldedand manufactured by Caterpillar toensure the highest level of quality anddurability.

Hitch. A larger and improved centersection features oversized plates andbosses to disperse forces. A largedouble-tapered roller bearing is used onthe lower hitch for reduced flexingstress and maintaining tight joints.

Hitch Pins. The wide hitch pin spreadsignificantly reduces horizontal loadingon hinge pins and hinge pin bearings forgreater durability and extended pin andbearing life. The extra room alsoincreases hydraulic hose clearance andmakes hose routing easier.

Fenders. Rear frame fender options areavailable for both grapple and cablearrangements.

Arches and Booms. All Caterpillararches use box-section construction, andare thoroughly tested to exceeddurability requirements.

Dual-Function Arch. The 525C isavailable with a dual function arch andcompatible with a sorting or bunchinghead. The dual-function arch offersvariable reach, which minimizesmachine maneuvering to pinpoint a loadwith the grapple, and large grapplecapacities.

Cable Arch. Allows outstanding lineskidding performance with a two-position adjustable height fairlead tomatch site conditions.

Comfortable Work Station. The workstation incorporates years of cab designinnovations to maximize operatorcomfort and productivity.

Air Suspension Seat. Standard airsuspension seat swivels 30° to the rightfor maximum comfort, while allowingthe operator to observe skidder andgrapple operations to the rear.

Sealed Cab. The pressurized cab issealed from exterior air (with windowsclosed) for efficient heating andcooling. Tight door and window casingsalso keep out dust, fumes and insects.

Air Conditioning. Standard with theenclosed, pressurized cab, airconditioning helps the operatorconcentrate on work rather thanenvironmental distractions. A dedicatedcab filter assures clean air, while tightdoor and window casings keep out dust,fumes and insects.

Windows. Tough polycarbonatewindows protect the operator, and arelarge enough for an excellent side andrear view, increasing operatorconfidence and productivity. Slidingglass windows protected by metalscreens in both doors provide fresh airand communication outside themachine.

Sound Insulation. With the optionalenclosed cab, ample sound insulationkeeps interior sound levels low.Reduced sound levels meet operatorenvironment regulations andsignificantly boost operator comfort,especially on long shifts.

Cab Mounting. The modularROPS/FOPS cab is resiliently mountedto the skidder frame, reducing vibrationfor greater comfort and a quieter ride.

Machine Controls. The comfortableoperator environment usesergonomically designed and placedmachine controls to reduce fatigue andincrease productivity.

Steering Column. Tilts and telescopes tofit any size operator. Transmissiondirection and range selection controlsare built into the steering wheel forconvenience and productivity.

Steering Articulation. Full 90° steeringarticulation, stop-to-stop, with aboutone-quarter wheel rotation, providesexcellent maneuverability andproductivity.

Transmission Controls. Transmissioncontrols for forward, reverse and gearrange are located on the steering wheelfor easy fingertip control. The operatorcan control machine functions withminimal effort, allowing greaterconcentration on loading operations.The result is higher productivity andreduced operator fatigue.

Governor Pedal. The governor pedal hasbeen moved to the right for moreclearance between the brake pedal, andfor improved operator comfort.

Single-lever Grapple Control. A singlefour-function joystick control has topmounted switches for grapple open andclose, tong rotate, and Auto-GrabSystem activation. The control issimple, convenient and easy to use.

Decking Blade Control. Relocating thedozer control to the right consolereduces operator effort and improvescomfort. Excellent modulation providesprecise control for various decking andclearing functions while reducingoperator fatigue.

Auto-Grab Switch. The Auto-Grabsystem monitors and adjusts tongpressure as needed to maintain a securegrip on grapple loads.

Lock-up Torque Converter Drive. Lock-up torque converter drive selectionswitch helps match transmission speedrange to skidding requirements. Anindicator light informs the operatorwhen the torque converter is in thelocked mode.

Differential Lock Switch.Ergonomically located rocker switchallows quick engagement of differentiallocks when needed.

Monitoring Controls. Convenientlylocated and easy-to-see gauges anddisplays make monitoring machinesystems as simple as possible.

Gauges. Four gauges indicate enginecoolant temperature, hydraulic oiltemperature, torque converter oiltemperature, engine rpm and fuel level.

Caterpillar Monitoring System.Monitors fuel, temperatures, vitalelectrical systems, gear speed anddirection. A three-level warning systemalerts the operator of potentialproblems.

Additional. The right hand console has astandard 12V outlet for poweringauxiliary equipment. The cab is pre-wired and fitted for an entertainmentradio, and a CB type 2-way radio.

ROPS / FOPS. FOPS (Falling ObjectProtection) and ROPS (Roll-OverProtection) guards offer protection tothe operator and the machine.

Redesigned Grapples. Caterpillardesigned and manufactured grapplesuse box section construction forultimate durability. The new tongcurvature reduces the time it takes tobundle the load, and higher clampforces deliver excellent load retentionfor secure hauls to the landing.

Bunching Grapples. Bunching grapplesare designed for harvesting mid-to-largediameter trees, usually felled by amechanical feller buncher. Its large tongopening is designed to gather a largenumber of these stems per cycle formaximum loading. It is heavier than thesorting grapple, but its large capacityholds more stems for improvedproduction in smaller trees and largeloads.

Thinning Grapples. Thinning grapplesare designed for harvesting smalldiameter trees, usually felled by amechanical feller buncher. Its large tongopening is designed to gather a largenumber of these small stems per cyclefor maximum loading. Cat grapplesoffer large capacity for maximumperformance and productivity.

Grapple Snubbers. Grapple snubber lifewas improved, reducing grapple swing,hydraulic hose stresses and increasingcomponent life.

Flow Divider. An improved grappleflow divider delivers a higher flowcapacity and maintains consistent tongsequencing.

Hydraulic Winch. The 525C features anew electronically controlled hydraulicwinch for grapple applications,replacing the mechanical winch. Thehydraulic winch improves applicationflexibility by allowing the tractive effortto be used while winching, andeliminating the continuously rotatingdriveshaft.

The new high capacity winch has fourfunction controls: reel-in, reel-out,brake-on, and free-spool. This winch isdriven and controlled by the mainimplement hydraulic system.

Cable Winch. An electro-hydrauliclever controls the winch hydrauliccontrol valve, located on the winchcase. The integrated softwareelectronically protects free-spoolclutches.

The C-500 mechanical winch is stillavailable on cable skidders wherehigher line speeds and max drum pullare important. Winch sump oil is usedfor hydraulic control and lubrication.

Decking Blade. The decking bladeefficiently clears landings and roads,and maintains log decks. It features boxsection steel arms for superior strengthand durability. Decking blade pusharmsare mounted directly to the mainframefor excellent strength, and set lower andforward for efficient clearing of slashand debris as well as log deckmaintenance. The new electro-hydrauliccontrol improves operator comfort andcontrol of the decking blade.

• Heat-treated bolt-on edge andmaintenance-free pivot joints foroutstanding durability.

• The wide decking blade featuresbolt-on cutting edge for simplifieddecking blade serviceability anddurability.

New Engine Enclosures. Large, hingedengine enclosure doors make regularmaintenance as easy and fast aspossible. Easy access to daily servicepoints increases the likelihood thatmaintenance will be done, and increasesmachine service life. Ground Level Access. Most filters andlube points are accessible from theground without special tools. Remotelubrication points make daily attentionto hard-to-reach joints easy.

Bolt-on Guards. Bolt-on guards offerprotection to critical components, andare easily removable for servicing.Removable floor plates and side plateallow access to components under thecab.

Radial Seal Air Filters. Hand accessmakes them easy to change, reducingair filter maintenance times.

Extended Oil Service Intervals. A 500-hour oil change interval reducesdowntime for service and lowersmaintenance costs.

Remote Engine Oil Drain. Remote oildrain lines speed up regularmaintenance and avoid accidental oilspills while servicing.

S•O•SSM Fluid Sampling Valves.Provides a fast, convenient way togather uncontaminated fluid samples,which improves analysis reliability.

Pressure Taps. Conveniently located foreasy access to hydraulic systempressure measurements.

Spin-on Oil Filters. Spin-on fuel andengine oil filters shorten downtime.

Electronic Transfer Pump. Eliminatesthe need to manually prime the fuelsystem.

Ecology Drains. The transmissioncompartment now includes a newecology drain. All major fluidcompartments (hydraulic tank, engineoil pan, radiator, axles andtransmission) now incorporate ecologydrains to make regular maintenanceeasier, and protect the environmentfrom accidental oil spills.

Hitch Hoses. The grapple pilot hoses,pressure line and load sense lines haveall been routed above the hitch, andbeen bulk-headed for easy hosereplacement and fastest service. Thehitch hoses use the Cat ToughGuard™technology and have excellent wearcharacteristics.

Electrical System. The 24V electricalsystem delivers dependable electricalpower for engine cranking, additionallighting, and engine diagnostics. Wiringcircuits are color coded, numbered andprotected by circuit breakers.

On-Board Diagnostic Systems. TheCaterpillar Monitoring Systemcontinuously checks all critical machinefunctions and components, and helpslocate faults quickly for faster repair.Extremes are recorded, including fluidtemperatures, engine speed andelectrical system events.

Radiator. Cleanout access doors locatedon both sides of the radiator help makeradiator cleanout faster. The radiatorfeatures an all aluminum constructionwith 8 fins per inch for easy cleanout.

Matched Set Hitch Bearings. Matchedset bearings come pre-assembled withthe correct pre-load from the supplier tostreamline the assembly process andensure a quality hitch joint every time.No rolling torque measurement isrequired, so the assembly process issimplified. Matched set bearings alsoreduce service time in the field.
