Cat C7 Engine. The Cat C7 usesCaterpillar’s breakthrough ACERT™Technology to meet exhaust emissionreduction standards. It features efficientair management, fuel delivery andelectronic control for high productivityand exceptional service life.

Engine Design. This four-stroke engineprovides efficient fuel combustion.Precise engineering and thoroughtesting assure durability, reliability andplenty of power. Built-in serviceabilityand excellent fuel economy loweroperating costs.

ACERT™ Technology. Caterpillaroptimizes engine performance whilemeeting EPA Tier 3 regulations.ACERT™ Technology reducesemissions during the combustionprocess by using advanced technologyin the air and fuel systems, in conjunctionwith integrated electronics. Caterpillarmeets emission regulations at thecombustion source rather thanrecycling exhaust gases.

ADEM A4 Control Module. Controls thefuel injector solenoids to monitor fuelinjection. This system provides automaticaltitude compensation, and it will notallow the engine to fire until it has oilpressure, acting as cold start protectionand a form of pre-lube.

Turbocharger. The C7 features a wastegate turbocharger that provides highboost over a wider range, improvingengine response and peak torque, aswell as providing outstanding low-endperformance.

Maintenance. The C7 engine reducescosts and downtime with a 500-hour oilchange interval. Extended serviceintervals can save thousands of dollarsover the life of a machine. Machines areequipped with Caterpillar high efficiencyoil filters, whose revolutionary designdoubles efficiency without increasingthe change interval.

Water Pump. A dual thermostat controlimproves coolant flow and heatdissipation, resulting in better durability.

Electronic Transfer Pump. The electricfuel transfer pump is self-priming,eliminating the need for a manualpriming pump.

Five-Speed Transmission. The fieldproven Cat power shift countershafttransmission easily matches enginepower to the load size and groundconditions. Electronic control makesfingertip controls possible, reducingoperator fatigue and improving comfort.

Gear Application. Gear ratios arecarefully designed to maximizeproductivity in specific cycle segmentsand under specific loads.

• Gear 1 provides highest rimpullcapability for heavy loadapplications.

• Gears 2, 3 for normal loads andhigher speed operations.

• Gears 4, 5 provide excellent emptyreturn and roading speeds.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The C-Series Skidders have anadditional transmission feature foradded performance and operator comfort– the Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC). This unique feature providessmoother shifting and increases skiddingperformance by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.

Torque Converter. The large, heavy-duty torque converter maximizes theproductivity of the entire drive train.The torque converter is matched to theCat C7 engine for excellent rimpull andskidding performance. This lock-uptorque converter has proven itsdurability over thousands of hoursof punishing loads.

Improved Productivity. The torquemultiplication capability of the torqueconverter reduces the need for theoperator to continually shift thetransmission to maintain good skidderperformance, as is required oncompetitive skidders. This reducesoperator effort and improves machineproductivity.

Lock-up Clutch. The integral lock-upclutch allows the machine to operate inconverter drive for greater rimpull, ordirect drive for high efficiency haulingand faster travel speeds. Direct drivecapability allows up to 15% highertravel speeds when the lock-up clutchis engaged.

Auto Lock-up. The lock-up clutchautomatically engages accordingto ground speed and engine speedconditions. This feature is handledelectronically and allows for increasedtravel speeds in the same gear.

Reduced Operating Costs. Torqueconverter direct drive capability,combined with the lock-up differential,reduces wheel slip. This minimizesrutting and soil damage in straight-ahead pulls on weaker soil. In turn, itminimizes tire wear, component stressand fuel consumption, reducing totaloperating costs.

Differential Locks. Normal operation iswith the differential locks in both axlesdisengaged, meaning the all four wheelsare free to drive independently. Lockinga differential forces both wheels on anaxle to turn in sync with each other.

Both front and rear differential locks areeasily engaged and disengaged with aconveniently located switch on the righthand console. Hydraulically actuateddifferential locks allow for on-the-goengagement or disengagement.

Axles. Axles feature a full length oil sumpwith splash lubrication for excellentheat rejection and long component life.The 525C is available with two axleoptions – Standard Duty axles are usedfor most applications and tire sizes upto 30.5 � 32. A Wide Axle option isavailable for use in moderate to severeapplications, or when using dual tires,wide flotation tires or chains.

Front Axle. The front axle features apinion-mounted design and a heavy-dutyhousing, eliminating the need for thefront axle guard.

Pivot Design. The oscillation pivot designprovides industry leading ride comfort.

• 15° oscillation absorbs minor shockloads caused by stumps and holesand helps isolate the cab from axlemovement for a smoother, morecomfortable ride.

• Front axle oscillation also providesexcellent fore-aft stability for largecapacity grapples and dual functionarches.

Brake Components. Brake componentsare housed inside the axles, protectingthem from dirt, dust and wet groundconditions. Inboard brakes allow forsplash lubrication and cooling. They arevirtually maintenance free, and providereliable brake performance in the mostdemanding logging applications.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. A loadsensing variable displacement pumpand pressure compensating systemcontinually monitor hydraulic powerrequirements, then provides powerbased on demand.

Lower Power Consumption. The variabledisplacement hydraulic pump drawsengine power only when braking,steering, dozer or grapple actuationdemands flow or pressure. This conservesengine horsepower and increases fuelefficiency.

Cooling Demands. Load sensinghydraulics provide flow only whenneeded, saving fuel and generatingless heat, allowing the cooling systemto allocate more capacity to the engine,transmission and torque converter.

Oil Cooler. The oil cooler is locatedabove the radiator for better hydraulicoil cooling performance and to makeradiator cleanout easier.

Auto-Grab Feature. Auto-Grab,engineered by Caterpillar, constantlymonitors tong pressure and adjusts asneeded to securely hold grapple loadswhile skidding. It is easily activatedon demand by a switch located on theright-hand control lever.

Cat ToughGuard™ Hoses. CaterpillarXT®-3 ToughGuard™ hoses improvehose life in the grapple, arch, boomand across the hitch. ToughGuard hoseshave been very successful in reducingearly hour hose failures. O-ring faceseals assure rock-solid connections thatmaintain pressure and reduce oil leaks.

Steering. Fully hydraulic control.Meets the following standards:SAE J1511 OCT90, ISO 5010-1992.

Box-Section Construction. Caterpillardesigned and manufactured box sectionstructures set the industry standard forreliable, durable main frames. Extensivecomputer analysis and field-testingresulted in the design of the 525C.

Absorbs Twisting and Shock Loads.Frames can absorb twisting and impactforces to provide a sound foundationand well-balanced system for the entirestructure.

Superior Balance. Low center of massand weight forward design createexcellent skidder balance.

Maneuverability. The 525C skidderprovides the tightest turning radius forsuperior maneuverability while stillmaintaining the excellent balancerequired for high capacity skidding.

Caterpillar Manufacturing. The frontand rear frames are robotically weldedand manufactured by Caterpillar toensure the highest level of qualityand durability.

Hitch. A heavy-duty center sectionfeatures oversized plates and bosses todisperse forces. A large double-taperedroller bearing is used on the lowerhitch for reduced flexing stress andmaintaining tight joints.

Hitch Pins. The wide hitch pin spreadsignificantly reduces horizontal loadingon hitch pins and bearings for greaterdurability and extended pin and bearinglife. The extra room also increaseshydraulic hose clearance and makeshose routing easier.

Fenders. Rear frame fender options areavailable for both grapple and cablearrangements.

Arches and Booms. All Caterpillararches use box-section construction,and are thoroughly tested to exceeddurability requirements.

Single Function Arch. This high strengthdesign is simple to operate and is ideallysuited for logging conditions wheremaneuverability is not limited by groundconditions. This arch is best suited foruse with the bunching head grapple.

Dual-Function Arch. The 525C isavailable with a dual function arch andcompatible with a sorting or bunchinghead. The dual-function arch offersvariable reach, which minimizes machinemaneuvering to pinpoint a load with thegrapple, and large grapple capacities.

Cable Arch. Allows outstanding lineskidding performance with a two-positionadjustable height fairlead to match siteconditions.

Comfortable Work Station. The workstation incorporates years of cab designinnovations to maximize operatorcomfort and productivity.

Air Suspension Seat. Standard airsuspension seat swivels 30° to the rightfor maximum comfort, while allowingthe operator to observe skidder andgrapple operations to the rear.

Sealed Cab. The pressurized cab issealed from exterior air (with windowsclosed) for efficient heating and cooling.Tight door and window casings alsokeep out dust, fumes and insects.

Air Conditioning. Standard with theenclosed, pressurized cab, air conditioninghelps the operator concentrate on workrather than environmental distractions.A dedicated cab filter assures clean air.

Windows. Tough polycarbonatewindows protect the operator, and arelarge enough for an excellent side andrear view, increasing operator confidenceand productivity. Sliding glass windowsprotected by metal screens in both doorsprovide fresh air and communicationoutside the machine.

Sound Insulation. With the optionalenclosed cab, ample sound insulationkeeps interior sound levels low.Reduced sound levels meet operatorenvironment regulations and significantlyboost operator comfort, especially onlong shifts.

Cab Mounting. The modular ROPS/FOPScab is resiliently mounted to the skidderframe, reducing vibration for greatercomfort and a quieter ride.

Machine Controls. The comfortableoperator environment uses ergonomicallydesigned and placed machine controlsto reduce fatigue and increaseproductivity.

Steering. Column tilts and telescopes tofit any size operator. The quarter-turnsteering wheel quickly and accuratelycontrols 90 degrees of machinearticulation delivering excellentmaneuverability and productivity.

Transmission Controls. Transmissioncontrols for forward, reverse and gearrange are located on the steering wheelfor easy fingertip control. The operatorcan control machine functions withminimal effort, allowing greaterconcentration on skidding operations.The result is higher productivity andreduced operator fatigue.

Governor Pedal. The governor pedal islocated to the right for more clearancebetween the brake pedal, and forimproved operator comfort.

Single-lever Grapple Control. A singlefour-function joystick control has topmounted switches for grapple openand close, tong rotate, and Auto-GrabSystem activation. The control issimple, convenient and easy to use.

Decking Blade Control. The deckingblade control is located on the rightside console. This location providesfor precise control for various deckingand clearing functions while reducingoperator fatigue.

Auto-Grab Switch. The Auto-Grabsystem monitors and adjusts tongpressure as needed to maintain asecure grip on grapple loads.

Lock-up Torque Converter Drive.When activated by a switch on the maindashboard, the machine will automaticallyswitch between operation in fuel efficientdirect drive mode or torque converterdrive for maximum rimpull in toughskidding applications.

Differential Lock Switch.Ergonomically located rocker switchallows quick engagement of differentiallocks when needed.

Monitoring Controls. Convenientlylocated and easy-to-see gauges anddisplays make monitoring machinesystems as simple as possible.

Gauges. Four gauges indicate enginecoolant temperature, hydraulic oiltemperature, torque converter oiltemperature, engine rpm and fuel level.

Caterpillar Monitoring System.Monitors fuel, temperatures, vitalelectrical systems, gear speed anddirection. A three-level warning systemalerts the operator of potential problems.

Additional. The right hand console hasa standard 12V outlet for poweringauxiliary equipment. The cab is pre-wired and fitted for an entertainmentradio, and a CB type 2-way radio.

ROPS/FOPS. FOPS (Falling ObjectProtection) and ROPS (Roll-OverProtection) guards offer protectionto the operator and the machine.

Reliable, Productive Grapples.Caterpillar designed and manufacturedgrapples use box section constructionfor ultimate durability. The tongcurvature reduces the time it takesto bundle the load, and higher clampforces deliver excellent load retentionfor secure hauls to the landing.

Bunching Grapples. Bunching grapplesare designed for harvesting mid-to-largediameter trees, usually felled by amechanical feller buncher. Its large tongopening is designed to gather a largenumber of these stems per cycle formaximum loading. It is heavier than thesorting grapple, but its large capacityholds more stems for improved productionin smaller trees and large loads.

Thinning Grapples. Thinning grapplesare designed for harvesting smalldiameter trees, usually felled by amechanical feller buncher. Its large tongopening is designed to gather a largenumber of these small stems per cyclefor maximum loading. Cat grapplesoffer large capacity for maximumperformance and productivity.

Sorting Grapples. Sorting head grapplesare designed primarily for use in skiddinglarger, inconsistent diameter timber.The “scissor” action of the tongs is wellsuited for gathering individual logs.

Grapple Snubber. Reduces grappleswing, hydraulic hose stress andimproves component life.

Flow Divider. The high capacity flow-divider delivers reliable operation andmaintains consistent tong sequencing.

Hydraulic Winch. The 525C featuresan electronically controlled hydraulicwinch for grapple applications, replacingthe mechanical winch. The hydraulicwinch improves application flexibilityby allowing the tractive effort to beused while winching, and eliminatingthe continuously rotating driveshaft.

The high capacity winch has fourfunction controls: reel-in, reel-out,brake-on, and free-spool. This winchis driven and controlled by the mainimplement hydraulic system.

Cable Winch. An electro-hydrauliclever controls the winch hydrauliccontrol valve, located on the winch case.The integrated software electronicallyprotects free-spool clutches.

The C-500 mechanical winch isavailable on cable skidders wherehigher line speeds and max drum pullare important. Winch sump oil is usedfor hydraulic control and lubrication.

Decking Blade. The decking bladeefficiently clears landings and roads,and maintains log decks. It features boxsection steel arms for superior strengthand durability. Decking blade pusharmsare mounted directly to the mainframefor excellent strength, and set lowerand forward for efficient clearing ofslash and debris as well as log deckmaintenance. The electro-hydrauliccontrol improves operator comfortand control of the decking blade.

• Heat-treated bolt-on edge andmaintenance-free pivot joints foroutstanding durability.

• The 525 C is available withfour blade options to allow it to becustomized to many different typesof operating conditions:

– No Blade – for industrialapplications

– Narrow Decking – 85" width forgeneral purpose applications.

– Wide Decking – 105.4" widthwith bolt-on cutting edges –for improved coverage of tiresand high decking blade usage.

Ground Level Access. Most filters andlube points are accessible from theground without special tools. Remotelubrication points make daily attentionto hard-to-reach joints easy.

Rear Frame Access. Steps and grabirons are located on the rear frame andcab for easier access to the rear frame,arch and boom.

Bolt-on Guards. Bolt-on guards offerprotection to critical components,and are easily removable for servicing.Removable floor plates and side platesallow access to components underthe cab.

Radial Seal Air Filters. Hand accessmakes them easy to change, reducingair filter maintenance times.

Hitch Hoses. The grapple pilot lines,pressure line and load-sense lines arerouted above the hitch and are bulkheadedfor easy hose replacement and fastestservice. The hitch hoses use the CatToughGuard™ technology and haveexcellent wear characteristics.

Electrical System. The 24V electricalsystem delivers dependable electricalpower for engine cranking, additionallighting, and engine diagnostics. Wiringcircuits are color coded, numbered andprotected by circuit breakers.
