Summer is finally here, the kids are out of school, and the suitcases are being packed for summer family vaca-
tions. Whether its weddings, friends, family reunions, days by the beach or taking your children to Disney World; these
things are what memories are made of.
Families come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and compositions. It is that diversity that makes our relationships
stronger. Whether our children enjoy Sunday breakfast with Nana and Papa or they go to Auntie’s up north for a week in
the summer; it is these experiences that make our families memorable, healthy and connected.
Many parents feel stress over the summer months to find something to do to entertain our children outside of the
school calendar, these events don’t need to be large and costly. Remember, children make memories based on how they
feel. If it’s Sundays at the beach, packing your lunches for a picnic, meeting up with friends and playing in the surf…
these are all memories and those memories make an impact on our families. It is always important for one’s health and
well-being to feel connected to others, even in times of stress and feeling overwhelmed, we need connections, we need
families and we need support. Whether they are our children, our extended families, our coworkers, our group of best
friends or our neighbors, being a part of a family, being connected to others and having shared experiences and memories
are important to our emotional health. Even in times when loading everything in the car and going to the beach or the
pool seems overwhelming, remember that you can’t replace the time you spend on or invest in our families.
There was an article in the New York Times that stated, there are 940 Saturdays between your child’s birth and
when they leave for college, this is a powerful reminder to use our time wisely. Every moment, every interaction, every
day, every word and every activity our children are watching and learning…teach them well. The pressure of being a par-
ent and being in a family can weigh heavily on all of us at times. When that responsibility seems overwhelming, take a
step back and remember it’s the memories that matter. No one will remember or care if the car was packd just right, if
we got the best parking spot, if you forgot to bring napkins and all the other meaningless logistics we get caught up in…
what will be remembered are those moments laughing and playing on the beach.
For years to come and generations to come we have the ability to make an impact on our children, our families
and the lives of others. Everyone has memories of popsicles by the lake, summer sunsets, family cookouts and other nar-
rative histories that make us feel connected, that make us feel like family. Every day is a gift, every day with our chil-
dren is a precious gift, sometimes we need to remember that all our children really want is time with us. It is the kind of
unconditional love that cannot be replaced, so remember to cherish it and not take our moment in time with them for
granted. Take your time, turn off your phone, slow down, be present and when stressed remember that you are in it for
the memories. 239-659-7733 or [email protected]
The Importance of Family By Jaime Crossan-DeBres, LCSW
Combating the Food Addiction Almost everyone is guilty of having a sweet tooth. The occasional craving of an indulgence is a growing battle that
many struggle through. However you shouldn’t let that stop you from achieving your goals of a healthy diet.
Educating yourself against these cravings is one of the only ways to defeat them an become that healthy happy
person you’ve always wanted to be.
Feeding the Addiction: Next time you find yourself reaching the vending machine for that chocolate bar, think
of what you could substitute it with. Trading the milk chocolate for sweet berries and apples along with dark
leafy greens will not only satisfy that sugar addiction but keep you full for longer.
Fast-Food Nation: On almost every block there is an option for French fries and the hearty American burger.
The constant craving of these things could be a way of your body signaling you that you’re lacking in essential
fatty acids like Omega-3s. Rather than adding a super-sized order of fries with that sandwich try having a
healthy fat all together. Raw nuts and avocados are delicious and healthy options of “good” fats.
The Ultimate Problem Solver: Crazy enough, cravings and hunger pangs can be solved with just one thing. A
glass of water. At times, we may read our body’s signal wrong, what we think is our body asking us for a snack is
actually a sign of dehydration. Try this experiment: next time you find yourself reaching for some pretzels or a
chocolate bar, grab a nice glass of water. You’d be astonished at the results.
