ASQ movement is spreading very fast in India. Our Ahmedabad LMC has been torch bearer in some of the activities of ASQ India. Every year during the month of November which is celebrated as Quality Month worldwide, we celebrate it by conducting the Annual Quality Conference at Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 1. Objective: The objective was to encourage sharing of Best Quality practices and Research papers among the community including Industry, Academia, Students & Practitioners through organizing Annual Quality Conference. 2. Organizers: The conference was organized by ASQ Ahmedabad LMC jointly with the Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 3. Date & Time of conference: On 28th November, 2015 from 8:15 AM to 6:00 PM at Auditorium of Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 4. Details of participants: There were about 270 participants which include 80% from Industry and 20% from academia covering seven states of India. There were two International speakers. One International speaker was joined through WebEx to address the audience. 5. Unique Feature:

• Top Management shared experiences on Quality Management’s role in transforming India

• Thirty two live case study presentations • Seven Poster presentations on Quality practices • 12 ASQ Certified members and 8 ASQ Faculties were felicitated • Release of second book of ASQ LMC Ahmedabad and ASQ India titled

“Transforming India through Quality Leadership” • Awards to more 22 ASQ Student members who have successfully completed

their one year certification course • ASQ Information desk from where ASQ related i.e. Membership,

Certification Exam, ASQ EED etc. information were provided. • Interviews of Speakers as well as presenters were conducted to get their

insights and feedback. • Participations and case studies from 8 states of India and 2 International

speakers

6. Details of deliberation during the conference: Registration: The seminar started with registration of participants (8:15 AM to 9:00AM). The registration desks were very well organized by ASQ student volunteers. Inauguration session: Mr. FR Singhvi, Joint Managing Director, Sansera Engineering, Bangalore was the Chief Guest of this conference. Mr. Kishore Purswani, Executive Director, Corporate Monitoring, BHEL, Mr. Ciby James, Director, ASQ India and Shri K.K. Patel, Joint Managing Trustee, NERF and Vice President-Nirma University were the Guest of Honors for the conference. Prof. (Dr.) Somyajulu Gerimella, Director, Institute of Management Nirma University was the presiding over for the conference. Mr. FR Singhvi, Mr. Kishore urswani, Mr. Ciby James, Shri K.K. Patel, Prof. (Dr.) Somyajulu Gerimella, Dr. Himanshu Trivedi and Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh K Jain inaugurated the conference with lighting the lamp. Dr. Himanshu Trivedi, Chair-ASQ LMC Ahmedabad briefed about the ASQ LMC Ahmedabad progress in past one year. While delivering the welcome address, Dr Trivedi mentioned that Quality is undergoing transformation and leading role of Quality is now played by top management. If India needs to be transformed to developed country, we will have to develop deeper understanding of Quality; and Institutes and Industries can play vital role in this movement. He informed that many of the activities undertaken by Ahmedabad LMC are unique and benchmark activities. He also mentioned about the achievements of ASQ LMC Ahmedabad in the year 2015. The session was further addressed by the Guest of Honor Mr. James Ciby, Director ASQ India. He elaborated about ASQ India and its wide network of 75000 organization members. With a mission of driving quality knowledge across educational institutions ASQ is connected to almost 40 universities across the country. The session was further carried by Mr. Kishore Purswani, Executive Director, Corporate Monitoring, BHEL. He talked about the transformations that has taken place in the country in the past 10 years. The brands that existed 20 years ago are no longer seen today as due to better productivity new products have captured the market.

The Chief Guest of the session Mr. FR Singhvi, Joint Managing Director, Sansera Engineering talked about “Transforming India through Quality Leadership.” He emphasized that transformation can only take place when all the root cause of change is identified and the root cause of transformation is “We” the people itself. We need to regulate ourselves first and be a good citizen before thinking of any change. Unless we change it is difficult to transform. Integrity, honesty, humility and courage are some qualities that a leader should possess to bring about any change. Dr. Gerimella, Director IMNU addressed the audience and shared importance of Quality and emphasise the need and importance of this subject in current situation. Also present in this function was Shree K K Patel, VP Nirma University who praised the efforts of ASQ for spreading the Q message. During the inauguration session of the conference, the second book of ASQ LMC Ahmedabad and ASQ India was released. This ASQ India Publication titled “Transforming India through Quality Leadership” includes the shortlisted case studies of 2015 which add value to any organization who are towards the journey of Excellence. Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh K Jain-Vice Chair, ASQ LMC Ahmedabad delivered Vote of thanks at the end of the Inauguration session. Plenary session: After the inauguration session, there was a session named as “Plenary session” in which three eminent Quality professionals from Top Management of Well known organizations put forward their experience and views about what key role Quality Management play in transforming the nation. Mr. Kevin Noakes, Vice President, Quality assurance & Product Reliability, Schindler India Pvt. Ltd. said that one cannot be a global leader without innovation. He explained how Schindler India has brought technology into their system which has made their processes more efficient and productive. Dr. Manu Vora, Chairman & President,Business Excellence Inc., USA joined the session through Google Hangout. Dr. Vora said that focus of Indian Organizations should move from compliance to excellence. He talked about Leadership, Zero Defects and organization culture. He also talked about change management and

said that we should first determine the need for change, plan for it, implement it and then sustain it. Mr. Ville Pirila, Global Operational Excellence Manager, Distribution Automation, ABB Oy, Finland presented the case study. He expressed that Quality Management can play vital role in this transformation phase of India. He shared his experience of leading the ABB Operational Excellence teams across the world. Technical Sessions: After the Plenary session, there were seven parallel Technical Sessions in which total 32 presentations were made which include different sectors like Academia, Ceramic, Construction, Finance, Food Processing, Government, Hydraulics, IT, Power, Process, Projects etc. Mr. Madhu Madhavan, MD & CEO, Qsutra was the Session Judge for the Technical Session I. In the first parallel technical session, Mr. Gururaj Kulkarni (Ex. Crompton Greeves) presented on Application of DMAIC Techniques - A Case Study on Breakthrough Quality Enhancement; Mr. Vivek Padmavar (Dresser Rand India Ltd.) presented on Simplified Six Sigma – A Mantra Of Quality; Mr. Sukumar Karmakar (Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages) presented on Increasing Incidence (Beverage Sales/Total Sales) In E & D (Eat & Drink) Channel; Mr. Prashanth VD (L&T Technology Services Ltd.) presented on Customer Satisfaction Improvement through Continually Improving the Customer Feedback Survey Process - Case Study of L&T Technology Services; Mr. Dhirendra Gandhi (Bosch Rexroth India Ltd.) presented on Implementing Service Quality Concept In Industrial Service Organisation - A Case Study Of Bosch Rexroth India. Mr. Samir Shah-President Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) was the Session Judge for the Technical Session II. Mr. Vishesh Kavi (ABB Ltd.) presented on Award-Winning Sustainability of 5’S Implementation across the Location of All ABB Factories; Mr. Shirish Joshi (Welspun Corp. Ltd.) presented on Transformation Through Quality Management by Implementation Of 7S; Mr. Dharmesh Dave (L&T Technology Services Ltd.) presented on Plant Efficiency Improvement using Lean Approach; Mr. Mishal Jungi (Atmiya Institute of Technology & Science) presented on Implementation of 5S And KAIZEN To Improve Library Management System; Mr. Vinod Vaghamshi (Esquire Machines Pvt. Ltd.) presented on Achieving Customer Satisfaction Through Process Improvement Using PDCA & KAIZEN Approach.

Scenario; Mr. Sukumar Karmakar (Hindustan Cocacola Beverages) presented on Distributor’s Freight Cost Optimization Through Operational Excellence; Mrs. Nehal Mistry (HDFC Bank) presented on Enhancing Bill Pay Registration and Usage. Mr. Nital Zaveri- Director & CEO, Concept Business Excellence Pvt. Ltd. was the Session Judge for the Technical Session VII. Mr. Bhavin Vora (Technocrat Consultants) presented on Breakthrough Transformation through Use of Context Based Strategic Approach to Manage Quality Risk; Mr. Kannan Raghavan (Independent Consultant) presented on Transformation through Quality Management; Mr. Gururaj Kulkarni (Crompton Greaves) presented on Case of having evolved Successful Turnaround Strategy and Implemented through Total Quality Management Tools to create foundation for Business Continuity. Like past years, we had ASQ Student poster presentations also in this conference. Out student chapters students exhibited their projects and learning through posters and was exhibited during the lunch time to participants. Valedictory session: The Chief Guest for Valedictory session was Mr Darshak Vasavada, CEO Stamp- Computers, Bangalore. He address the audience and delivered his speech on Quality in IT sector and also shared his wide experience of Quality practices in IT Industry. ASQ Ahmedabad LMC believes that any achievement should be honored to motivate the achiever and others. In this way, ASQ Certified members who have passed any ASQ Certification exam from Ahmedabad centre were honored with mementos in the valedictory session by Guest of Honors Mr. Ciby James and Mr. Darshak Vasavada. Eight ASQ Faculties who voluntarily teach the modules of Annual Certification Course for Engineering students to ASQ students of PDPU-Gandhinagar were also honored with mementos and certificates for their contribution to guide and mentor the future engineers. were the Co-sponsors of this conference. The conference was supported by three well-known associations named as Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Indian Institution of Industrial Engineer (IIIE) and Rajkot Management Association (RMA). The conference had an International Association with ASQ Energy and Environment Division (EED). We had one exhibitor support for this conference named Infotech Standard India Ltd. who had kept his stall on the day of the conference and the participants were very delighted after visiting the stall. The exhibitor was also very happy after receiving such a great response from participants. ASQ Ahmedabad LMC has continued the Annual Certification Scheme for Engineering students of PDPU-Gandhinagar. This includes six module course for 3rd year and 4th year Engineering students. The second batch of PDPU-Gandhinagar have successfully completed this certification course. Total 22 students received certificates in the valedictory session in front of the Quality professionals from Industry and academia. The Best Paper Award Competition was organized very first time. Stringent process was developed where in blind review of submitted case paper script was reviewe by four judges. Subsequently, on the day of presentation, the presented papers were evaluated by another independent judge. Thus overall rating include pre and during conference assessment. Total three best awards were given. The first award went to HDFC bank, the second award was given to Hindustan Coco Cola Beverages Ltd and the third award and given to Reliance Industries Ltd. The invited judges to judge the case studies were also honored with the mementos and certificates. 7. Feedback: There was excellent feedback received from participants. Around 72% respondent rated ‘Excellent’ and ‘Very High’ on satisfaction with the ‘Usefulness of the conference’. About 78 % of respondents rated Quality and Contents of the selection of topics selected as ‘Excellent’ and ‘Very High’. The Venue and Content of Seminar was rated very high: 91% and 79% respectively as Excellent and Very High. The contribution of ASQ Ahmedabad LMC by publishing a book was highly appreciated by many participants. Overall 78% respondents rated the conference as ‘Excellent’ and ‘High Satisfy’. Many ASQ and Non-ASQ members are getting ready to join this movement of spreading the Quality knowledge by actively volunteering in ASQ LMC activities.

8. Conclusion: This conference has truly served its purpose by gathering the Quality professionals on a single platform to share their Best practices and research work with others. It was like an International Conference with participants from various states of India and few International speakers. 9. Conference takeaway: Each participant was given kit which include pen, writing pad, a book titled as Transforming India through Quality Leadership and a bag printed with ASQ logo. Each participant was given participant certificate and each case study presenter was given a memento (with print of ASQ Ahmedabad LMC) as well as certificate. We also gave appreciation certificates to each volunteer for their contribution. All Sponsors at different level and supporters were also appreciated for their support by awarding them memento as a memory of this seminar. 10. Memories, worth recording:
