National Family Caregivers MonthNovember is National Family Caregivers Month. What does it really mean to be a caregiver? Mostly, I think of it as simply being there for a family member or friend who needs some help. Caregiving takes on many roles. Maybe it’s picking up groceries for a friend who recently had knee surgery, or possibly you are giving your dad a ride to the doctor because he no longer drives. It could be supporting your spouse in many ways who has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Caring for another is very rewarding but it can also be stressful and worrisome. Connecting with others while in this role is essential for your own health. At the 5-5-1 Club there are many ways to connect with others: take a painting class, attend a theater production or join a support group. If you find yourself in a caregiving role, you might want to join us for our new Caregiver Café; see more on page 9.

Artful Living with Lyngblomsten™

Introduction to WatercolorTuesdays, October 22, 29 November 12, 19, 26 December 3Program # 1022-12032

During this six-week course, each new painter will discover how to move paint on the paper, learn about the different brushes and their painting effects, and how to create a composition before you paint. If you’ve ever wanted to try watercolor painting or haven’t painted in years, this is the preferred class. COMPAS artist Anne Krocak is known for her ability to encourage and bring out the artist in every participant.

Join us in the fight against hunger as we pack food at the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) site in Eagan. FMSC is a nonprofit organization, who with the help of volunteers, sends packaged meals to hungry children and families around the globe. This will be a fun and fulfilling opportunity to share with others during the busy holiday season. Please wear closed-toe shoes and leave jewelry at home (FMSC policy).

Photographic MemoirsFridays, November 1, 8, 15, 22 December 6 & 13Program # 1101-1213

Writer/Educator Louis Porter II, Ed.D., will lead this workshop-style class through the basics of memoir-writing, helping participants understand how to tell their true and personal stories in their own words. Participants who have photos available are invited to use them as a jumping off point for writing.

Additionally, we will incorporate holiday memoirs into at least one assignment. Towards the end of the process, participants will have the possibility of publishing and presenting their best work.

Today we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas as we head to Crown College for Christmas in Crown Chapel. Previously the St. Paul Bible Institute, Crown College has been putting on this beautiful Christmas presentation by their entire music department since 1983.

We’ll meet the student musicians who will guide us to the dining room for a nice dinner before the concert. After dinner we’ll head to the chapel with its stained glass windows to enjoy the beautiful and holy music of the Christmas season.

Singer, author, and illustrator Warren Hanson returns to Lyngblomsten to delight you with music and readings! Along with such favorites as A Cup of Christmas Tea, The Next Place, Older Love, Kiki’s Hats, and the enchanting Peef books, Warren will share from his newest book, The Steeple. He will read excerpts from this book, telling fun stories surrounding the books and singing.

Enjoy tea and treats at this charming morning retreat. Books will be available for sale after the presentation and Warren will stay for book signing.

Rides are available to the 5-5-1 Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays; call by noon one day in advance to reserve a ride. Cost is $3/round trip. Transpor-tation to appointments (e.g. medical, meetings, legal) in the St. Paul area is available every Monday for $7/round trip. Advance notice (noon the Thurs-day before) is required. Artful Living Programs

Refunds & Cancellation

If you need to cancel, we will refund payment whenever possible to do so.

Payment for all trips and classes (unless otherwise specified) are due at the time of registration. If you are registering by phone, please mail your payment immediately after calling. Reservations will not be confirmed until payment is received. Cash or checks—payable to “5-5-1 Club.”

Transportation fees are paid to the driver at the time of the bus service.
