THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is argua-

bly the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the

dark valley / I fear no

evil; for you are at my side / with your rod

and your staff / that g i v e m e c o u r -

age” (Psalm 23:4) con-

nects this week’s scrip-tures to the wonderful

story of the road to Emmaus, which we

heard last week. The

Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly

at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with

him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our bap-tism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I

came so that they might have life and have it more abundant-

(Correct Dates for this Year) In celebration of Mother’s Day, we will have a Novena of Masses. The series of 9 Masses will begin with the Anticipated Mass of Sunday at 5 PM on Saturday, 13 May and include every Mass on Sunday, 14 May (Mothers’ Day) through the Daily Mass of Thursday, 18 May. We continue accepting donations for this Novena this weekend. Special envelopes were included in the mailed packets and are available on the table in the vestibule.

Msgr. Van A. Wagner – RIP

When our parish was opened in January 1948, it was served by priests of the Diocese of Tucson. In January 1974, the diocese had made a decision to seek out a religious community to serve the parish. At that time, Fr. Van Wagner (later to become a Monsignor) was appointed as Pastoral Administra-tor until a religious community was able to commit to take on the responsibility of the parish. In June of that year, the Paulist Fathers took on the care of the parish, assigning Fr. Bill Dewan, CSP as its first Paulist Pastor.

Msgr. Wagner died on Thursday, 27 April at the age of 80. All funeral arrangements were held this past Friday—visitation with Rosary, Funeral Mass at SS. Mons. Van A. Wagner – DEP Cuando nuestra parroquia abrió sus puertas en enero de 1948, fue servida por sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Tucson. En enero de 1974, la Diócesis tomo la decisión de buscar una comunidad religiosa para servir en la parroquia. En ese momento, el Padre Van Wagner (que más tarde se convirtió en Monseñor) fue nombrado Ad-ministrador Parroquial hasta que una comunidad religio-sa pudiera comprometerse a tomar la responsabilidad de la parroquia. En junio de ese año, los padres Paulis-tas tomaron el cuidado de la parroquia, asignando al Padre Bill Dewan CSP como su primer párroco Paulista.

Southwest Medical Aid (SMA)

An Outreach Ministry in Tucson

SMA collects unused medical supplies from various agencies to distribute them in order to improve the quality of life of children and families with medical, nutritional, and hygiene needs.

They seek to reach out to our neighbors both near and far helping those who are the innocent victims of poverty, natural disasters or political un-rest regardless of race, religion or politics. Their facility has shipped supplies to a growing list of lo-cations including areas of Arizona, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Honduras, Uganda, and Ethiopia.

Next weekend, representatives of Southwest Medical Aid will be here at our parish to give a brief presentation on this ministry at our Masses to let you know of their availability to help you or a family member in need, as well as to share some ways you can help support this ministry.

Un Ministerio de Ayuda en Tucson SMA recolecta materiales médicos no usados de varias agencias para distribuirlos y mejorar la calidad de vida de niños y familias con ne-cesidades médicas, nutricionales y de higiene.

Ellos buscan alcanzar a nuestros vecinos ya sea de lejos o cerca para ayudar a esos que son víctimas de la po-breza, desastres naturales o persecución política sin importar raza, religión, o afiliación política. Sus instala-ciones ha enviado materiales a una creciente lista de ubicaciones incluyendo áreas de Arizona, Haití, Guate-mala, México, Perú, Honduras, Uganda, y Etiopía.

Attention Married and Engaged Couples In an effort to give practical help to married and engaged couples to live out the teaching of the Church, a short course on Natural Family Plan-ning is soon to start in our parish. Learn a meth-od that is safe, effective and morally acceptable. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Series of all 3 classes required: First series: 20 May, 17 June, 15 July Second series: 19 August, 16 September, 14 October

Postpartum classes – 11 November (only 1 class needed for those who complete the first 3 classes)

Premenopause class – 16 December (only 1 class needed for those who complete the first 3 classes)

Faith Formation Formación en la Fe

Religious Education Registration for the 2017–18 Catechetical year will be the first weekend in August. Parents may register their child/ren for sacrament preparation at that time. Catech-esis for Reconciliation and First Communion is offered to children of eight years of age and older. Preparation is a two consecutive year process. The child must have been baptized in a Roman Catholic Church and must attend classes weekly.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pope Francis reminds us that, God’s world is a world whe-re everyone feels responsible for the other, for the good of the other. (9-7-13) During this Easter season, as we seek to continue the Lenten Spirit of ENCOUNTER as Je-sus did, let us be aware that our outreach to those in need is helping to build a more compassionate world.

During the weekend of May 6-7, our diocese will be taking up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal collection and I ask that you prayerfully consider participating. This appeal supports the diose-ses here in our own country that struggle to make ends meet and to serve all of the needs of their parishioners. It is through your generosity that many churches are able to keep their doors open and provide essential pastoral services.

Our own Diocese of Tucson receives significant funding from Catholic Home Missions. Among our local ministries supported are our Native American Missions’ education programs for youth elders and young adults and native leadership training, Hispanic Ministry programs, our diocesan Permanent Diaconate and Lay Ecclesial Ministry programs and Jordan Ministry services. cando el Espíritu Cuaresmal de ENCUENTRO como Jesus lo hizo, reconozcamos que nuestro alcance a los necesitados

está ayudando a edificar un mundo más misericordioso.

Durante el fin de semana del 6-7 de mayo, se llevará a cabo en nuestra diócesis una colecta para el Llamado de las Misiones Católicas y les pido que en oración consideren participar. El llamado ayuda a mantener a las diócesis aquí en nuestro propio país, las cuales luchan por sobrevivir y salir adelante y poder responder a las necesidades de sus feligreses.
