Welcome to NLN NavanWe are very pleased to welcome you to National Learning Network in Navan and delighted you are taking the opportunity to look at what we can offer you.

NLN has two training centres in Navan. These are hubs of activity, providing students with supportive, well resourced, and friendly environments. We currently have 75 students and over 600 students have come through our doors since we opened in 2004.

Both centres are conveniently located, one in the town centre and the other in the Mullaghboy Industrial Estate on the Athboy Road. The town-centre location is beside Navan Shopping Centre and a range of amenities including the Department of Social Protection and Local Employment Service offi ces.

Our centres are easily accessible by Bus Éireann’s national transport links and the Navan town buses A, B, and C. There is free onsite parking for students at the Mullaghboy centre.

18 instructors and support staff make up the NLN team in Navan. We offer fi ve training programmes. The programmes assist learners to fulfi l their personal goals, whether this is to achieve qualifi cations or to go on to further education, to work on personal development or to get jobs.

We work closely with our local community and have built a network of business and industry partners, including many local employers who offer our learners the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and in-work placements.

Nine out of ten people who complete NLN programmes progress to employment or further education or training.

I meet all new students and if they have particular learning diffi culties, they will be given a regular session with me on our Resource timetable. The sessions are usually conducted on a one-to-one basis and last for about half an hour. The resource goals for each student are included in their Individual Action Plan.”

Access Employability Skills, QQI Level 3 Certification (3M0935)

Programme Details

Access is the name of NLN’s rehabilitative training programme. It offers students an opportunity to explore personal, social and vocational skills and includes a high level of integration with the local community. This training programme is based on the HSE’s (Health Service Executive’s) New Directions policy, which focuses on supporting people to achieve independence and inclusion in their communities.

Duration Accreditation

Up to 36 months in duration. Students have an opportunity to achieve QQI Level 3 certification leading to a Major Award in Employability Skills. Some also achieve a cert of completion with Touch-type, Read and Spell and the An Gaisce President’s Award at bronze level.

Advance Employability Skills, QQI Level 3 (3M0935)

Programme Details

The aim of the Advance training programme is to provide young adults with a combination of social skills and personal effectiveness training, plus career exploration and vocational-skills sampling. This training is designed to meet the needs of students, and enabling them to make realistic vocational choices for training or employment, based on their individual strengths, interests and abilities. The programme integrates literacy and numeracy in the training schedule. Opportunities to demonstrate the acquired skills, knowledge, and competencies are identified within the community. These opportunities allow students to participate as active citizens in their own locality, and move towards living independently.

Students are invited to undertake a sample period on the Advance Programme. This provides them with the opportunity to sample the day-to day-activities. A student’s needs are assessed and appropriate supports are implemented by our multidisciplinary team prior to entry to the programme.

Duration Accreditation

Up to 18 months in duration. This programme can lead to a QQI Major Award at Level 3 in Employability Skills.

Fresh Start Employability Skills, QQI Level 3 (3M0935)

Programme Details

This programme is designed for people who would like an opportunity to make a new beginning, and start a new career, after a period out of the workforce. The training programme provides an opportunity to re-examine vocational opportunities and facilitate career exploration, personal development, basic computer skills and job-seeking competency in order to progress to further education and/or employment. Students progress through the programme at a pace which is suited to their individual abilities. Skills will be acquired using a variety of teaching and learning methods.

Duration Accreditation

This programme is up to 12 months in duration.

This training programme will lead to a QQI Major Award at Level 3 in Employability Skills.

Employer-Based Training Employment Skills, QQI Level 4 (4M0857)

Programme Details

Employer-Based Training (EBT) is designed to provide participants with the necessary skill and experience to gain employment in the career of their choice through in-company placements as well as classroom-based training (on Mondays and Tuesdays). Practical skills are developed and applied within local companies. Most students study 4 – 5 modules a year based on two days per week in the classroom.

Duration Accreditation

Up to 12 months in duration. For students who have achieved the Leaving Certificate, this training programme will lead to a QQI Major Award at Level 4. Students with one module at Level 3 will achieve at least 72% of a Major Award at Level 4.

After accepting an offer of placement, a mentor was assigned to Laura to guide her through the required aspects of her training programme, and also to ensure that she was trained and given all the required information for her role within RocDoc.

However from our point of view, it was an opportunity to provide a working environment for someone to enhance their skills and learning. After being out of work for some time, I began to lose confi dence and felt defeated at every turn. I desperately wanted to get back into the workforce but was fi nding it diffi cult. Employment Opportunities

The main employment opportunities stem from the experience gained by the student while working with the host company.

If a job opening isn’t available with the host company on completion of the programme, we hope that the student will gain employment using the skills learned on their work placement with the added benefi t of a reference from their work experience supervisor.

Programme Details

This training programme provides participants with the skills needed to work in a modern office, such as administrative and IT skills. The students also complete a work-experience placement in order to get realistic, on-the-job training.

Duration Accreditation

Up to 18 months in duration. The programme can lead to a QQI Level 4 Major Award in Office Skills.

National Framework of Qualifi cationsThe National Framework of Qualifi cations (NFQ) is intended to put you, the student, at the centre of the education and training system in Ireland. The NFQ is a system of ten levels used to describe the Irish qualifi cations system.Each level is based on nationally agreed standards of knowledge, skill and competence i.e. what an individual is expected to know, understand and be able to do following successful completion of a process of learning. NLN offers training programmes placed across levels 1-6 of the framework.

Quality Assurances and StandardsQuality and Qualifi cation Ireland (QQI) QQI validates NLN programmes and makes awards at six levels. QQI is also responsible for the maintenance, development and review of the National Framework of Qualifi cations (NFQ).

Business ExcellenceNational Learning Network uses the EFQM Business Excellence model as the framework for its management structures and achieved the Recognised for Excellence Award in 2008, 2010 and 2013

eQuassNational Learning Network also achieved the European Quality in Social Services Award in all of its training locations. eQuass is a European quality mark that recognises excellence in rehabilitation services.

Excellence through PeopleNLN achieved the Excellence through People Gold Standard award in 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014.

QQI is responsible for the quality assurance of further and higher education and training in Ireland. QQI validates education programmes and makes awards for certain providers, NLN being one of them.

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is a computer literacy certifi cation programme provided by the ECDL Foundation. ECDL equips learners with the I.T. skills they need to prepare for the workforce or further education.

Microsoft Offi ce Specialist is a certifi cation program for using the Microsoft Offi ce suite:

Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access, for business applications.
