The readings this week deserve to be read, and reread and pondered. “God put Abraham to the test.” A bit scary, isn’t it? Think about it: God put (insert YOUR name) to the test. Perhaps one test you face arises from the disruptions caused by the pande-mic – feelings of discouragement, isolation, doubt and fear to name a few! Despite the various difficulties that may need to be faced, listen again to the words God speaks in today’s gospel - “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” Open your heart to Christ; listen attentively to what he is speaking to you, asking of you. How will you respond?

LENT GUIDELINES
-FASTING - is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. -ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and old-er. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

SEPTIMA PARTE CARTA APOSTÓLICA PATRIS CORDE DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO CON MOTIVO DEL 150.° ANIVER-SARIO DE LA DECLARACIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ COMO PATRONO DE LA IGLESIA UNIVERSAL.
Padre en la sombra El escritor polaco Jan Dobraczyński, en su libro La sombra del Pa-dre,[24] noveló la vida de san José. Con la imagen evocadora de la sombra define la figura de José, que para Jesús es la sombra del Padre celestial en la tierra: lo auxilia, lo protege, no se aparta jamás de su lado para seguir sus pasos. Pensemos en aquello que Moisés recuerda a Israel: “En el desierto, donde viste cómo el Señor, tu Dios, te cuidaba como un padre cuida a su hijo durante todo el ca-mino” (Dt 1,31). Así José ejercitó la paternidad durante toda su vida.[25] Nadie nace padre, sino que se hace. Y no se hace sólo por traer un hijo al mundo, sino por hacerse cargo de él responsablemente. To-das las veces que alguien asume la responsabilidad de la vida de otro, en cierto sentido ejercita la paternidad respecto a él. En la sociedad de nuestro tiempo, los niños a menudo parecen no tener padre. También la Iglesia de hoy en día necesita padres. La amonestación dirigida por san Pablo a los Corintios es siempre opor-tuna: “Podrán tener diez mil instructores, pero padres no tienen mu-
chos” (1 Co 4,15); y cada sacerdote u obispo debería poder decir como el Apóstol: “Fui yo quien los engendré para Cristo al anunciarles el Evangelio” (ibíd.). Y a los Gálatas les dice: “Hijos míos, por quienes de nuevo sufro dolores de parto hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes” (4,19). Ser padre significa introducir al niño en la experiencia de la vida, en la realidad. No para retenerlo, no para en-carcelarlo, no para poseerlo, sino para hacerlo capaz de elegir, de ser libre, de salir. Quizás por esta razón la tradición también le ha puesto a José, junto al apelativo de padre, el de “castísimo”. No es una indicación mera-mente afectiva, sino la síntesis de una actitud que expresa lo contrario a poseer. La castidad está en ser libres del afán de poseer en todos los ámbitos de la vida. Sólo cuando un amor es casto es un verdadero amor. El amor que quiere poseer, al final, siempre se vuelve peligroso, aprisiona, sofoca, hace infeliz. Dios mismo amó al hombre con amor casto, dejándolo libre incluso para equivocarse y ponerse en contra suya. La lógica del amor es siempre una lógica de libertad, y José fue capaz de amar de una manera extraordinariamente libre. Nunca se puso en el centro. Supo cómo descentrarse, para poner a María y a Jesús en el centro de su vida. La felicidad de José no está en la lógica del auto-sacrificio, sino en el don de sí mismo. Nunca se percibe en este hombre la frustración, sino sólo la confianza. Su silencio persistente no contempla quejas, sino gestos con-cretos de confianza. El mundo necesita padres, rechaza a los amos, es decir: rechaza a los que quieren usar la posesión del otro para llenar su propio vacío; rehúsa a los que confunden autoridad con autoritarismo, servicio con servilismo, confrontación con opresión, caridad con asistencialismo, fuerza con destrucción. Toda vocación verdadera nace del don de sí mismo, que es la maduración del simple sacrificio. También en el sacerdocio y la vida consagrada se requiere este tipo de madurez. Cuando una vocación, ya sea en la vida matrimonial, célibe o virginal, no alcanza la madurez de la entrega de sí misma deteniéndose sólo en la lógica del sacrificio, enton-ces en lugar de convertirse en signo de la belleza y la alegría del amor corre el riesgo de expresar infelicidad, tristeza y frustración. La paternidad que rehúsa la tentación de vivir la vida de los hijos está siempre abierta a nuevos espacios. Cada niño lleva siempre consigo un misterio, algo inédito que sólo puede ser revelado con la ayuda de un padre que respete su libertad. Un padre que es consciente de que completa su acción educativa y de que vive plenamente su paternidad sólo cuando se ha hecho “inútil”, cuando ve que el hijo ha logrado ser autónomo y camina solo por los senderos de la vida, cuando se pone en la situación de José, que siempre supo que el Niño no era su-yo, sino que simplemente había sido confiado a su cuidado. Después de todo, eso es lo que Jesús sugiere cuando dice: “No llamen ‘padre’ a ninguno de ustedes en la tierra, pues uno solo es su Padre, el del cielo” (Mt 23,9). Siempre que nos encontremos en la condición de ejercer la paternidad, debemos recordar que nunca es un ejercicio de posesión, sino un “signo” que nos evoca una paternidad superior. En cierto sentido, todos nos en-contramos en la condición de José: sombra del único Padre celestial, que “hace salir el sol sobre malos y bue-nos y manda la lluvia sobre justos e injustos” (Mt 5,45); y sombra que sigue al Hijo.
