Junior Fair Board Responsibilities A big part of 4-H is the Cecil County Fair, which is a lot of work but is also very fun and rewarding! Junior Fair Board members have an important role at the fair, before the events begin and after the events end. Members help with accepting Home Art and Farm and Garden entries, at Livestock check in and at the shows. They plan and help lead special events including the “Cecil Celebrities Event”, 4-H Team Goat Fitting Event, 4-H awards ceremony, children’s day, pretty animal contest, senior day, recycling, social media, and at other events. Moreover, they coordinate educational displays in the barns and buildings promoting 4-H and Agriculture. Responsibilities start before the fair opens with members working with adult committees, organizing ribbons and trophies and assisting with set up and after the fair is over with clean up. Junior Fair Board members are expected to attend meetings in January, March, May, June, July, October, and the dinner in December and help with work sessions at the fairgrounds. In addition, members are to be positive role models as you are representing 4-H and the fair. Members help establish rules and assist in carrying out the entire county Junior Fair program under the guidance of the Cecil County Fair Board and Cecil County Extension Office. The board is made up of 4-H youth. Members are selected for a one-year term and can reapply each year. Applicants must be between the ages of 14-20 as of January 1, 2018 and be a good standing member in the Cecil County 4-H program or a 4-H Alumni. Those out of 4-H must have a Cecil County Fair Board Director who is a committee chairperson to be your mentor. The mentor cannot be a direct relative.

Please submit application and one letter of recommendation (from a non-relative) (letter of

recommendation only needed for new members) to: April Barczewski, UME-Cecil County, 200 Chesapeake Blvd, Suite 1500, Elkton, MD 21921 or

Type or write a menu on at least a 4x6 medium (paper, chalkboard, poster board, etc.). It should be legible and easy to read and understand (Do not prepare food) 4. Participants MUST provide a card table to display your entry. 5. 4-Hers should do their set up and presentation by themselves.

Prizes will be awarded for the TOP THREE Junior, Intermediate and Senior displays. Remember this is for fun!!!

Creating Your Table Setting Did you know that you can be a designer each time you set the table? A designer chooses and arranges things according to a plan for beauty and order. A neat, interesting, clean and attractive table setting makes any meal more enjoyable. Actually, there is more than one way to set a table. The usual way to set a table is to put all the dishes, flatware, and food on the table before anyone sits down. When there is company or for a special meal, part of the food and dishes may be left in the kitchen and served later. Diners at a buffet or a picnic may fill their plates and glasses before they are seated. The way to set your table depends upon the way the meal is to be served. Select a Theme - What is the occasion...a family dinner, a holiday, or lunch with friends? Select a theme which fits the occasion. Possibilities can run from a fishing party sack lunch to a formal Mother’s Day dinner. This theme should be evident. Contestants are encouraged to dress to the theme of their table. Table Accessories - These include any item used to set a table: tablecloth, placemats, dinnerware, glassware, flatware, and centerpiece. Choose table accessories that fit the occasion and carry out the theme. Paper plates, plastic ware, and paper napkins may be used for a picnic but they would not be appropriate for a formal dinner. Flatware and dishware must be safe to eat from i.e., no glitter, glue, etc. is to be used on eating surfaces. Don’t forget the table covering. You can include a centerpiece and table decorations. Menu - Be creative – don’t forget to have a balanced meal which may include appetizers, main dish, vegetables, fruits, desserts, etc. Use the https://www.choosemyplate.gov/ as your guide for developing a healthy meal. Menu can either be sitting on table or propped up on an easel. Contestants should understand the nutrition and preparation of the menu they prepared.
