Living the Paschal Mystery

Repentance is about changing one’s mind, letting go of the narrowness

of our own perception of how life should be to embrace the effusiveness

of God’s mercy and compassion. Repentance, in terms of changing one’s

mind, is really the same as conversion. The dying to self of repentance

and coming to new Life through God’s gracious mercy must characterize

our Christian living and make real and concrete our baptismal commit-

ment. If we wish to bear fruit, we must die to ourselves. Here is an inter-

esting paradox: if we don’t bear fruit, we die, but we must die to bear

fruit. The choice before us is about dying: meaningless dying

(selfishness) or fruitful dying (to self for the sake of others).

The gospel parable says for “three years” the owner of the fig tree had

been waiting for good fruit. God waits more than three years for us to

bear fruit— God waits each and every day of our lives for us to bear

fruit. The good news is that God never gives up on us. God continually

cultivates and fertilizes—especially by the ongoing proclamation of

God’s word and the invitation to God’s table. All we need to do is re-

pent, retry, reconcile, renew, restore. All we need to do is choose the

new Life God offers those who turn from sinfulness to receive divine

mercy and compassion.

Viviendo el Misterio Pascual

El arrepentimiento se trata de cambiar la mente de uno, dejando de lado la estre-

chez de nuestra propia percepción de cómo debería ser la vida para abrazar la

efusión de la misericordia y la compasión de Dios. El arrepentimiento, en térmi-

nos de cambiar la mente de uno, es realmente lo mismo que la conversión. El

morir a sí mismo de arrepentimiento y llegando a una nueva vida a través de

gracia misericordia de Dios debe caracterizar nuestra vida cristiana y hacer real

y concreto de nuestro compromiso bautismal. Si queremos dar sus frutos, debe-

mos morir a nosotros mismos. Aquí es una interesante paradoja: si nosotros no

lleva fruto, morimos, pero hay que morir para dar fruto. La elección que nos

ocupa se trata de morir: morir sin sentido (egoísmo) o morir fructíferos (a uno

mismo para el bien de los demás).

La parábola del Evangelio dice de "tres años" el dueño de la higuera había es-

tado esperando buenos frutos. Dios espera más de tres años para que demos a

Dios Fruit- espera todos los días de nuestras vidas para que podamos dar fruto.

La buena noticia es que Dios nunca se da por vencido con nosotros. Dios cultiva

continuamente y fertiliza, sobre todo por la proclamación continua de la palabra

de Dios y la invitación a la mesa de Dios. Todo lo que tenemos que hacer es

arrepentirse, volver a intentar reconciliar, renovar, restaurar. Todo lo que tene-

mos que hacer es elegir la nueva vida que Dios ofrece a aquellos que se apartan

de la pecaminosidad, para alcanzar misericordia y la compasión divina

Rev. R. Tony Ricard, M. Th., M.Div., is a Priest for the Archdiocese

of New Orleans and is the Pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish.

He is also a former Core Instructor of Church Doctrine for the Insti-

tute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New Orleans.

Fr. Tony has given keynote addresses, retreats, revivals and youth

talks across the nation. At last count, he has preached in 20 countries.

Fr. Tony is a native New Orleans and a proud graduate of Our Lady

of Lourdes Elementary School and St. Augustine High School. He is

a former New Orleans Public School teacher who holds a

Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from

Loyola University, a Master of Theology degree from Xa-

vier University’s Institute for Black Catholic Studies and a

Master of Divinity degree from Notre Dame Seminary.

Rachel's Vineyard

Retreat weekend for Healing after Abortion. Rachel's Vineyard retreat is for

men and women struggling with the emotional and spiritual pain of abor-

tion. The retreat is designed to help participants work through repressed

grief and anger in a safe, nonjudgmental setting and come to acceptance,

healing, and hope for the future. Developed in the Roman Catholic Tradi-

tion, it utilizes spiritual exercises and rituals to help grieve the loss of un-

born children and to accept God’s forgiveness. All inquiries and registra-

Lent Reflection:

Lent is the time to start new patterns of prayer. Perhaps I haven't been praying at

all. This is a great time to choose to begin. It is important to begin realistically. I

can start by simply pausing when I get up and taking a slow, deep breath, and re-

calling what I have to do this day, and asking for grace to do it aa a child of God. I

may want to go to bed a half an hour earlier, and get up a half an hour earlier and

give myself some time alone to read the readings for the day, and just talk with the

Lord about those readings or about the stuff of the day. I may choose to go to Mass

each day during Lent. I may choose to get to church on Sunday, just 15 minutes

earlier, so I can reflect a bit. Lent may be a time I would want to choose to start to

journal the day to day reflections that are coming, the desires I'm naming and ask-

ing for, the graces I am being given.

Moisés encuentra hoy a Dios en la zarza ardiente y Jesús nos

habla de un Dios paciente, que nos da aun otra oportunidad

de arrepentirnos y de dar frutos. Al escuchar hoy la sagrada

palabra de Dios, hagamos consciencia de donde encontramos

nosotros a Dios en nuestra propia vida. ¿De que manera se

muestra Dios paciente para con nosotros y como responde-

mos nosotros a ese cuidado y esa atención tierna de Dios?

La Cuaresma: es el momento de empezar nuevos patrones de la ora-

ción. Tal vez no he estado orando en absoluto. Este es un buen momento

para optar por comenzar. Es importante comenzar con realismo. Puedo

comenzar simplemente haciendo una pausa cuando me levanto y tomando

una respiración lenta y profunda, y recordando lo que tengo que hacer el

día de hoy, y pidiendo gracia para hacerlo aa un hijo de Dios. Es posible

que quiera ir a la cama una media hora antes, y obtener una media hora

antes y darme un tiempo a solas para leer las lecturas del día, y hablar con

el Señor acerca de esas lecturas o sobre la materia de la día. Puedo optar

por ir a misa todos los días durante la Cuaresma. Puedo elegir para llegar a

la iglesia el domingo, a sólo 15 minutos antes, por lo que puede reflejar un

poco. Cuaresma puede ser un momento me gustaría optar por empezar a

diario el día a día las reflexiones que vienen, los deseos que estoy nom-

brando y pidiendo, las gracias me está dando.

Oracion para la Cuaresma: Señor, dame la gracia de caminar esta Cuaresma por la sen-da de una fe viva, operante y luminosa que me permita iluminar todos los ac-ontecimientos de mi vida con tu luz, y me ayude a ser fiel y perseverante en mis propósitos de acompañarte en la cruz con amor y generosidad.
