Principal’s Weekly News

Dear Parents, Staff and Friends,

Bullying is a word that’s wrapped in emotion. For many people bullying is associated with bad childhood memories. It’s been estimated that around 40% of people have experienced some type of bullying in the past. Bullying is an insidious behaviour that transgresses children’s natural right to feel safe and secure. It can adversely affect their learning, emotional well-being, further peer relations and their sense of self.

Bullying takes many forms and guises including, physical and emotional abuse, intimidation, harassment and exclusion.

It now has a well-publicised cyber-dimension, which has moved the goalposts for many kids. In the past children could escape bullying behaviours they may have experienced by being at home. Cyberbullying now means that kids can’t escape the bully like they once could. Bullying is not the domain of one gender. Girls bully just as much as boys, but they do it in less physical ways. While boys use physical intimidation or verbal abuse to wield power, girls are more likely to use exclusion or verbal sarcasm to assert themselves.

Bullying should not be confused with teasing, rejection, random acts of violence or physicality and conflict. While children will often tease or fight, this bickering should not be confused with bullying. Bullying is about lack of power as one person is powerless to stop the teasing or physical abuse. Bullying is the selective, uninvited, repetitive oppression of one person by another person or group. If you think your child is being bullied, then handle with care, as children often don’t want to admit that they are on the receiving end of bullying. Some kids keep it close to their chests, so it helps to be on the lookout for warning signs such as: items being stolen, changing the route to school and withdraw-al from usual activities. If your child is being bullied:

1. Listen to their story: Children who are bullied need someone to believe their story. Take them seriously and avoid dismissing complaints as tell-tale. Use common sense to differentiate between bullying and more random, non-selective antisocial acts. Kids can be nasty to each other, yet this doesn’t constitute bullying. 2. Deal with their feelings: A child who is bullied probably feels scared, angry and sad. Boys are more likely to display anger and girls claim they feel sad. The degree of emotional intensity is an indicator of the amount of bullying. Recognise and validate their emotions. Let them talk

about how they think (remember boys respond better to ‘think’ language) and feel. It’s normal to feel sad, scared or just plain confused.

3. Get the facts: Get a clear picture of what happens, including who is involved, the frequency and what happens prior to any bullying. Get

your child to be as specific as possible by asking good questions. An accurate picture will help you determine your next course of action.

4. Give them coping skills: With a clear picture you can start giving your child some help about how he or she may deal with bullying includ-

ing using avoidance strategies, being more assertive and changing poor body language.

5. Get the school involved: Bullying is best handled when parents and teachers are involved. Approach your school through the appropriate

channels, make yourself aware of your schools’ anti-bullying stance, and be willing to work within these guidelines.

6. Help build your child’s support networks: Kids need a group of friends to support them when they experience bullying so look for practi-

cal ways to broaden friendship groups.

7. Build their self-confidence: Provide children with systematic encouragement. Let them know through your words and treatment of them

that they will get through this period.

It’s worth remembering that children who experience some form of bullying often come out stronger and more resourceful because they have

experienced difficulties and they know they can defeat them.

Jubilee Primary School

Principal’s Weekly News

What a great day our students had on Monday to celebrate Jubilee Day.

The feedback from students following the church participa-tion and performances in both year group sessions was fantastic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the New Life Uniting Church and the Southland Christian Centre for their contribution to Jubilee Primary School’s 13th Birthday.

It was lovely to see so many family members and friends

enjoying a picnic lunch on the oval.

THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT!

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is beauty, admire it.

Life is a dream, realize it.

Life is a challenge, meet it.

Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it.

Life is sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a song, sing it.

Life is a struggle, accept it.

Life is a tragedy, confront it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is luck, make it.

Life is too precious, do not destroy it.

Life is life, fight for it.”

― Mother Teresa

God bless you and best wishes for the

week ahead.

APA Weekly News

with Brian

G’day everyone. Welcome to Week 6.

Happy Birthday Jubilee! Our week started on a very happy and positive note with our Jubilee Day celebrations yesterday. Our day opened with a very special worship and celebration, led by the pastors and youth team from Southland Christian Centre. At that service, pastors and repre-sentatives from out local covenant churches formally affirmed the covenant established by the pastors of our four founding churches and recom-mitted to the ecumenical mission of our school. Later in the day, the youth team from New Life Uniting Church led firstly our P-3 classes and then our Yr’s 4-7 classes in some exciting games and activities built around the theme of unity. The day was capped off by a picnic lunch on the school oval in which our students and teachers were joined by parents and grandparents. It was a wonderful celebration of Faith, Learning and Unity and all that is good about Jubilee School. We thank all those who contributed to and participated in the day, especially our co-ordinator, Mrs Joanne Riddell, our music magician, Mr Shane Parry, our teachers, our pastors and representatives and our parents and grandparents. Life Education Visit: Once again, we are very fortunate to have the Life Education van visit Jubilee and we’ve been fortunate enough to have this visit sponsored by a local community service group called Communities for Children - Northern Gold Coast, to whom we are extremely grate-ful. This sponsorship reduces the cost by more than half to be only $ 4:00 per student, which will be charged through the school fees system. This fee includes the interactive presentation by our instructor, Janet Connolly, a teacher’s guide and a student activity book. The timetable for the lessons is as follows:

NAPLAN: Congratulations to all our Yr’s 3, 5 & 7 students on the completion of this year’s NAPLAN testing. The week ran very smoothly and all classes, even those not directly involved, were very co-operative and supportive of this process. Thank you everyone. Today I par-celled up securely and sent off our Jubilee student test booklets. Test reports come out to schools and students later in the year. University of NSW ICAS Tests, 2013: Nominations for these tests are now closed. The first of these to be conducted is Science, which will take place on Wednesday 5 June, with the English to follow on Wednesday 31 July and the Mathematics on Tuesday 13 August. Medications and Mobile Phones in Student Schoolbags: Just a reminder that students are not to have medications such as Nurofen and Panadol in their school bags. All medication needs to held and administered at the school office. We also remind you that students who bring mobile phones to school must hand them in at the school office or to their class teacher each morning and collect them each afternoon. Your support in this regard is greatly appreciated. Have a great Week 6 everyone ! Cheers,

Brian Mason, APA

Browse and Borrow our Books

We have recently purchased a number of books on special needs to start our new Learning Support Library. These books are all located in the Parent Meeting room in the learning support rooms. There are books on Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Cerebral Palsy, Coeliac Disease, Epilepsy, Autism, Asperger’s, Anxiety, ADHD, OCD and general learning difficulties. There are books for parents and picture books for children. It is only very small collection at this stage. We will purchase more resources based upon the feedback we get from our borrowers. Books can be borrowed for two weeks. There is a limit of one book per loan at this stage due to the small number of books available. You just need to fill in your details in the borrowing register. By doing this you agree to return the books in two weeks and replace any lost or damaged books. The best time to browse or borrow is before or after school as the meeting room is often used during class time. Borrowing starts next week. There will be tea and coffee available while you browse before and after school next week. Drop in and let us know what you think.

Week three is a surf safety and awareness program delivered by senior Gold Coast City Council Lifeguards. Week four is a football carnival with other schools at Metricon Stadium on the 17th of June.

Please return to your coach or to Mr Davies by Thursday this week. This is really important as there will be a sports top stocktake next week, it would be most unfortunate if invoices for tops need to be sent home. Yours in Sport and HPE,
