Lest We Forget

A Message from Pastor Neil Johnson - Southland Christian Centre

This week we remember those Aussie Diggers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in war. The biggest focus is always for us the arrival of our troops on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915.

When you are interested in this important part of our national history and our cultural identity as a nation, you cannot help but reflect on the courage and bravery of our diggers, and what it was that helped to shape their willingness fight for our freedom.

There are many great acts of heroism remembered from Gallipoli, but one that is outstanding is the role played by military chaplain William McKenzie, or “Fighting Mac”.

What an amazing Australian!

Minnie Carpenter wrote:

"Chaplain McKenzie made Christ real to thousands of men... Up and down the fire-swept ridges he followed them, carrying food and water; tramping miles for their mail; by night cutting steps over treacherous patches which the boys must travel in the morning; praying with them; helping them to live; supporting them as they died. Burying literally hundreds of brave lads fallen in battle, he spent far into the night in his dim dugout, writing to their relatives."

Col Stringer writes..

“After WW1 'Mac' was the most famous man in Australia. He had

served the Anzacs on Gallipoli, the Middle East, the Somme,

Pozieres and Passchendaele. During this time he led 3,000 to a

living faith in Christ as well as burying hundreds of them. 'Enemy

shells roared overhead, but ... large numbers of men came to the

improvised communion table and knelt to receive the emblems of

salvation.' He took part in the charge at Lone Pine, armed with only a

shovel. His 'boys' pleaded with him to stay behind. He was wounded,

narrowly escaping death. He heard God's audible voice saving his

life on six occasions. He was presented with the Military Cross,

diggers loved him. Mac was a regular hero to the men.

There is an old saying that goes, “There are no atheists in foxholes”. Fighting for our freedom, we can be assured that the young men who lost their lives under the care of Fighting Mac were able to connect with their creator. Today military Chaplains also play an important role in supporting the faith of our men and women who are part of our defence forces.

May God richly bless you as you remember family members who have died, and those who continue to serve in defence of our nation.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

With ANZAC Day upon us tomorrow, I stumbled across this speech written by a student of Newtown Primary School in 2003. He read this at the dawn service and as I sat in my office last week reading it I thought that it encapsulated the Spirit of the ANZAC beautifully!

So please sit back, put your feet up and have a read of what ANZAC Day means to a Primary School boy in the 2000’s:

WHAT ANZAC DAY MEANS TO ME

Joshua Riley-Hanson

We stand here in the dark waiting for the sun to rise and another day to begin. This is no ordinary day, this day is an extra spe-cial day, a day that fills my heart with pride. This is the day we remember the courageous young men who fought for our way of life for today is ANZAC Day.

ANZAC Day is a day of celebration, but not of war and death. We gather to celebrate pride, bravery, mateship and express our eternal gratitude.

I try to think not of the loss that occurred many years ago in far off Turkey; what I think of is the bravery and the spirit of a

generation of young Australians. These young Australians embarked on what they thought would be the adventure of a life time, how wrong they were. This was no adventure but a descent into a hell that none of our young Australians could have imagined in their worst nightmares.

Yet, still the reaction of our young Australian warriors was not to run away in the face of fear, nor to hide in the face of terror but to get on with the task at hand and endeavour to make the best of what would have been an unimaginable situation.

Each and every day they would see their mates fall in battle. The losses were tragic as the youth of this and so many other countries were cut down before ever having the opportunity to enjoy their own lives. Every day they would do what was asked of them, they willingly gave their lives in defence of our way of life.

This attitude and bravery made them the most prized of allies and the most feared of foes. It is because of this attitude and their ability to do what was thought to be impossible that has created the ANZAC legend. That legend bought us all here today.

This is our countries most important day. This is the day that we remember the willingness and selfless attitude of not only

that first generation on the now sacred ground of Gallipolis beaches but also those that have followed in their footsteps, heroes in their own right. From the trenches of Europe to the skies of Britain, from the terrible pacific ocean battles to the jungles of Burma and New Guinea, from the humidity of Vietnam to the heat of the Middle East.

The men and women that have served in all of the conflicts that Australia has been involved in have shown commitment and bravery above and beyond that of mere mortals.

That is why, on this morning, we honour not the war but that spirit in the human soul that makes those people in the prime of their lives willingly go and place themselves in a position of danger, those people who are willing to give up so much to protect the lives of people they have never met. That compassion and pure act of selflessness for their fellow human beings is what has created a permanent home for those heroes, because the home of heroes is in our hearts and that is where these brave men and women will always reside.

Although these veterans grow fewer in number each year, I hope that they realize they are never forgotten. I am eleven years old and I attend every dawn ANZAC service. I figure that I have approximately another eighty to attend. While there are peo-ple like me and the children I plan to have, they can not be forgotten. For we are the proof that they existed, without these heroes a lot of us would probably have never been born.

So to the heroes whose home is in our hearts,

WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM AT DAWN.

ANZAC DAY MARCH AND EVENTS

Jubilee has been invited to march in the Coomera ANZAC Day march tomorrow gathering at 8.45am. The march will commence at the Coomera School of Arts. Students wishing to participate in the march are asked to be at the assembly point 8.45am in full school uniform. Please look for Mr Sketcher and the Jubilee School Banner between 8.30am and 8.55am.

Please note that tomorrow is ANZAC Day and the school will be closed.

QUOTE of the WEEK

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do.

You can go as far as your mind lets you.

What you believe, remember, you can achieve."

God bless you and best wishes for the week ahead.

AP ANTICS

G’day everyone! This week we take part in three very special ANZAC Day

commemorative services...

Yesterday (Mon 23rd): I had the great pleasure of accompanying our four school

captains, Amy Brown, Declan Hargreaves, Maddison Murphy and Tobias Allcott, in

representing Jubilee at a special student commemorative service at Brisbane City’s

ANZAC Square. Attending were hundreds of students representing various primary

and secondary schools from Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

The service was interesting and meaningful and our captains represented us with

pride and distinction.

Today (Tue 24th): This morning, at 9:00am we celebrated a beautiful whole-school

ANZAC Day commemorative service in front of our newly relocated memorial area

(near the oval stairs). We can all be very proud of how attentive and respectful our

students were throughout the service. We’ve included some great photos of both

services in this newsletter.

Tomorrow (25th): A contingent of Jubilee students, staff and parents will represent

Jubilee at the Upper Coomera ANZAC Day march and service. All Jubilee students and parents are welcome to attend, but

parents are asked to ensure that an adult is present with students in attendance please. Jubilee participants are asked to meet

Mr Sketcher at the School of Arts in Reserve Road at 8:30am to prepare for the march, which starts at 9:00am sharp.

Students attending are asked to wear formal Jubilee uniform, including hat and sunscreen.

ICAS Competitions 2012: This is the final call for parent nominations for students to participate in the University of NSW

ICAS Tests in Science (6 June), English (31 July) and Mathematics (14 August). Completed nomination forms (1 per

child) with accompanying payment ($7.70 per test) are to be submitted by next Monday 30 April .

NAPLAN 2012: Our Yrs 3, 5 & 7 students and their teachers continue their preparation for this year’s NAPLAN (National

Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy) tests, which will take place in Week 5 of term 2 (Tue 15 - Thu 17 May). We wish

them well in their preparations and for the tests to come.

Parent-teacher Conferences, Semester 1, 2012: This year, we will be operating with a slightly different arrangement

for our Parent-Teacher Conferences, in that there will not be one specified week in which all interviews will take place.

The teachers on each year level will decide on the most appropriate timing for their year level interviews to take place

and they will notify the families of these dates in advance via a parent letter. This letter will include an explanation of the

process and an open timetable of 15 minute timeslots indicating teacher availability, which parents are to use to

nominate times that would suit them for these conferences.

Two Car park issues:

Parents and carers using the drive-through pick-up line of Binstead Way are asked to please leave a gap at the top of

the driveway for vehicles attempting to exit the car park near the tennis court and Jubilee Centre. The line understanda-

bly banks up and moves quite slowly between 2:50 — 3:15 pm and if no gap is left at the top, vehicles attempting to

leave can be ‘blocked in’. A gap of one car length at the top would allow vehicles to pass through the line and exit.

Despite our many requests not to do so, there are still some parents persisting in driving in to the staff car park areas

near the Jubilee Centre and top Manra Way entrance to drop off students of a morning. While perhaps only there for a

short time, parents who do this often cause staff members, whose vehicles are here all day and who often have heavy

bags/crates to carry in, to have to park outside the school grounds. Apart from parents of students with mobility issues

accessing designated disabled spaces, parents are once again asked not to enter those areas of a morning.

Having said that, I would like to once again sincerely thank all of you who do support us and show your understanding by

adhering to our guidelines and requests in such situations. Your co-operation is always greatly appreciated.

Special School Focus: Over the next few weeks we will be revisiting correct school uniform as our special school

focus, because we’ve noticed a large number of students wearing incorrect shoes with their uniforms and many of

these students were spoken to about this last term. The correct shoes for our Formal Dress Uniform are black

leather dress shoes, with white Jubilee socks. For our Sports Unifiorm, they should be predominantly white sports

shoes (joggers) with non-marking soles. The white sports shoes, which are worn with white Jubilee sports socks,

must also have white laces and minimal other colour on them. The focus is:

“For formal uniform, black shoes are right,

But for sport our shoes must be mostly white!

Have a great Week 2 everyone!

SPEECH AND DRAMA NEWS

The first lesson back last week was one of great excitement as we all discussed our entries into the Gold Coast

Eisteddfod later in term three. We are sure to do well if the level of enthusiasm is any gauge!

All students took home their entry forms. Please make sure these signed forms, together with the entry

fee, are returned to school by next Monday 30th April. This is a priority as the eisteddfod closing date

cannot be extended.

Fees for this term are also due on the 30th April. Your attention to this is appreciated. Please do not include

eisteddfod payment with these fees if you are paying by direct debit. The Eisteddfod entry must be returned to school.

We have three public holidays this term. Please rest assured we have addressed these dates in our planning and

any classes missed shall be covered before the end of term.

Do I have your email address? If there was a request on your term account, please make sure you

supply the information!

Any questions? Feel free to send me an email.

G&T WORSHOPS We have some wonderful workshop opportunities coming up on Saturday April 28

th which are filling up fast, if

you haven’t already booked please do so as soon as possible as places are limited and bookings are essential.

For Years 1-4 we have a fabulous cartooning workshop all about monsters with well-known QLD Cartoonist Phil

Judd. In this workshop, children will learn how to draw cartoon monsters using basic shapes and develop a

monster profile. They will get the opportunity to create their own monster using the concepts taught in the

workshop. In the class, the children are also introduced to the concepts of inking in and equipment like a light-

box that are used by professional cartoonists every day.

For Years 5-9 we have a wonderful mind puzzling workshop where participants will be able to experience the

educational brilliance of hands on learning with the multi-award winning Kaleidoscope Classic and the world’s

oldest puzzle, LoKulus. Plus mind-teasers and mind-challenging games. Mind Puzzler’s goal is to stimulate a

passion for learning and further the pursuit of excellence. You will be encouraged to think creatively, and to

develop your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

For parents and teachers we have a seminar on “An introduction to Gifted Children with Learning Disability:

Gifted......with something else going on...” This workshop will consider why some gifted children fail to thrive at

school. Could it be an unidentified learning disability or an invisible neuro-biological or emotional issue? Some

claim that the mandated curriculum is just "boring", or that the child is just plain ‘lazy’. Is it worth delineating the

exact cause of a gifted child’s underachievement? Does it really matter what we call it? Approximately 10-20% of

gifted children also have “something else going on” – come and find out if yours might be one of them.

For further information and booking details please email to address below. Places are limited so please book

early to avoid disappointment.

PLEASE NOTE: We are trialling a new booking system bookings can now only be made via our website’s Gold

Coast page http://www.qagtc.org.au/gold-coast and via www.qagtc.org.au– no email or phone bookings. You

Car Park Safety – We are always impressing on the children who attend After School Care the importance of coming upstairs from the oval etc to meet the person collecting them and avoiding the carpark area because of its obvious dangers. Occasionally parents/carers send their child/ren to the gate or the car ahead of them and we would ask if you could please keep your child/ren with you until you can escort them safely through what is often a high traffic area from 3 – 6pm.

Orange Wristbands – This week with the commencement of AusKick on the oval, we are putting orange silicone wristbands on all children at After School Care for easy identification. This will assist our staff in knowing which children are part of our group playing in the undercover area (and which are familiar faces to us but are with their parents for the afternoon), and hopefully also help the AusKick coaches identify which children are to be returned to us at the end of the session. If your child still has their band on when you pick them up please pop it in the bucket provided on the sign in/out table.

Have a great week;
