ABOUT AMITY CREEK ELEMENTARY The word Amity means belonging, cooperation, togetherness and goodwill. This description builds the cornerstones for our lives at school as we emphasize community, choice-making, acceptance, risk-taking and the celebration of our social, emotional and academic journeys. Amity Creek at its core is a family. Amity is a small school with just six classrooms where children, parents and staff are equally valued and respected members. It’s located downtown, where there are many opportunities for learning outside the four walls of the building. Every morning the whole community meets for a gathering that takes on many faces and is the heart and foundation of the day’s happenings. The day unfolds with children spending time not just in their homerooms, but with small groups working together throughout the building. During the school day, students, staff and parents work together in a child-centered learning community that celebrates the journey for each individual. THE COMMUNITY Bend-La Pine Schools is located in Deschutes County in the heart of Oregon and serves one of the fastest growing communities in the state. More than 17,500 students from Bend, Sunriver, and La Pine areas are served by its schools. The district has enjoyed exceptional community support. With the highest percentage “yes” vote in history, the community passed a bond in May, 2013 to build a new middle and new elementary school in addition to nearly 150 other projects to upgrade schools throughout the district. Nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountain Range, the district borders alpine forests and the high desert. It is well known for its 300+ days of sunshine a year. The breathtaking scenery, abundant year-round outdoor recreational activities, and many points of interest has helped tourism to emerge as a leading industry. In addition, the rich, active community lifestyle embraces novice to world-class athletes and enthusiasts. From its agricultural and forest product roots, the Bend community has grown into the commerce, medical, educational, and cultural center for the region. It serves as home to Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort, St. Charles Medical Center, Central Oregon Community College, and the Oregon State University Cascades Campus. OSU-Cascades provides four-year and graduate degrees and is embarking on a steep growth curve.
