Teck donates to 4 area food banks

Teck Resources Ltd, which owns and operates the Highland Valley Copper mine has donated $70,000 in total to 4 area food banks, with each organization receiving $17,500 — the Kamloops Food Bank, Logan Lake Food Bank, Nicola Valley and District Food Bank, and Lyt-ton Anglican Food Bank. The company donated $50 on behalf of each employee at Highland Valley Copper.

Solstice conjunctionToday, Jupiter and Saturn will meet

in a “great conjunction,” the closest they could be seen in the sky together for nearly 800 years.

From downtown Merritt, the 2 plan-ets have been seen for the past week or so in the southern sky, until they set be-hind the Coutlee Plateau.

An astronomical conjunction occurs when it appears on Earth that 2 heaven-ly bodies pass or meet each other. This one is considered “great,” because it is an encounter between our solar system’s 2 largest planets. Of course, the planets are never actually close at all. During their encounter today, they will still be sepa-rated by more than 730 million kms.
