It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Grandmother and friend, Joan Elaine

O’Brien. Joan passed away peacefully on Saturday October 23rd at the age of 74 with her family by her side at her home in Tappen. Joan was born in Hanna, AB on December 2nd 1946 to proud parents Roderick and Ruth McDonald. She spent her childhood in Hanna with her siblings Judy, Bill and Jim before relocating with her family to Salmon Arm. In 1967, Joan married Daniel Thomas O’Brien and became a mother to six children. Joan spent her lifetime supporting and com-mitting to many community events and groups. Joan was involved in 4-H for over 40 years and taught many children how to sew. She was a director for the Tappen Co-Op, Salmon Arm Fair and Carlin Hall Association. Joan played a huge role at the Carlin Hall and she organized many events and baked for the numerous Coffee Houses. Over the years, she has dedicated endless hours volunteering her time with both the Tappen Co-Op and Salmon Arm Fair. Family meant the world to Joan and we will cherish the many memories we had together. Joan was predeceased by her parents Roderick and Ruth McDonald, husband Daniel O’Brien and sister Judy Swaren. Joan is survived by her children Lorraine (Matt) Thomas, Irene (Daniel Schwartz) O’Brien, Karen (Adrian) Bubola, Colleen (Greg) Paetsch, Heather (Michele Weber) O’Brien, Geoff (Heather) O’Brien. She will be lovingly remembered by her grand-children Nicole (Coltan), Jared (Cassidy), Joel (Noelle), Kierra, Mikaela (Jesse), Danielle, Abbi, Riley, Drew, Wyatt, Connor, Hailey and great-grandchild Luke. Joan is also survived by her two brothers Bill (Betty-Ann) and Jim (Joan) along with numerous relatives, friends and neighbours. Joan will be sadly missed by all who knew her. We will never forget all the memories we made with A private family service will be held from the Chapel of Bowers Funeral Home.Joan will be laid to rest at the Tappen Cemetery. Joan fought a courageous battle against chronic lung conditions, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the British Columbia Lung Association. A celebration of life to honour Joan will be orga-nized by her family at a future date. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Richard Currie and Kathy Jacobs for their dedicated compassion, commit-ment, and care over the years. Online condolences may be sent to Joan’s family through her obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com

HOMELESSNESS GOING INTO WINTER

I’m trying to figure out how this community is set up for the coming winter for its homeless

population, estimated to be about a hundred now. There are not many beds at the Salvation Army shelter, and it’s fortunate that the new Cedars apartment is opening in November just as the McGuire lodge is set to close. But that still leaves many homeless left to fend pretty much for themselves this winter. I decided to pay a visit at the little tent community set up by the abandoned tennis courts off 3rd St. SW on Tuesday. I brought over a veggie tray and a bunch of bananas for the group of about eight, and we chatted for a bit. One woman who was nursing a broken nose from a house she was staying at the week before, was tidying up the whole time that we spoke, trying to make the rain soaked site as much like home as she could. Another fellow who served Canada in Afghanistan was worried for the future, but appeared to find solace from the group. I only took one photo (above) - a painting by a woman who was keeping warm inside her tent and spoke to me through an opening. Everyone was kind to me and seemed intent on supporting each other. There’s some support from the community - like showering at the shelter, lunches at the Free Methodist Church food banks, and many kind people out there. There’s also some effort underway to to enlist volunteers to pop by daily, and help out where they can. There’s also considerable meanness ex-pressed by some in our community. One wom-

an said a guy drove by in a big truck earlier in the day, and

shouted through his window, “Get the f**k out of our town!” Although some are from other places, the one he shouted at is from here just as she assumes the guy in the truck is from here. I didn’t see any evidence of drugs there, but the elephant in the room of homelessness certainly involves addiction issues. That is naturally a big part of the problem and I am not

naive about that. There’s also some where homelessness is a life choice. There are also mental health issues and theft incidents that draw distrust. It’s complicated. It is not that hard for any of us, or at least loved ones, to

gradually or quickly slip into such a state. Anyway, I’m not offering any solutions here, just a little compassion. Oh yes, as I walked back to my car, the veteran guy ran up to me... “(name) wants to give this to you” as he handed me a little bag of food mix to boil up. I tried to hand it back to him. “I can’t take this,” I replied. “No, she’d be offended if you don’t accept it,” he smiled. “ Thank you for listening.” I thanked him, and shouted thanks to the others, and then sat in my comfortable old car for a few minutes, and weeped. The tent folk look out for each other. Wheth-er you approve or not, they are fellow citizens doing what they can in their own ways. n

I always carry my phone on my Tues-day morning walks with my cousin Dan. Not because I’m waiting for it to

ring, but there might be something inter-esting to take a photo of along the way. Sure enough, we passed by this big bra hooked onto a branch along the sidewalk of Lakeshore Drive between Morrow’s brewery and Nufloors. I figure there’s always a story to tell when you see something like that. I had no idea what that story could be, but I can quickly tell you my little story about a bra on a branch. It was 40 years ago this month that my young wife and I moved from Winnipeg to Stonewall to begin new careers, mine with community newspapers, and hers with a new teaching position. We finally sold our little house on Morley in the old Riverview part of Winnipeg. But before selling that house we would get these calls from the real estate agent that someone was coming to look at the house in ten minutes. So the routine was to keep two empty baskets always on the ready - one to gather up the dishes in the sink, the other for the laundry. Anyway, one time we did the drill, running to the car carrying the dishes and laundry, and going for coffee at the nearby Salisbury House. Then about 40 minutes later we get the all clear and return home. The only problem was that this time, we get back and there’s this billowing bra hooked on the lilac tree by the front gate. Yes, the first thing the prospective buyers would have seen as they arrived at the house. Curb appeal was not part of the language then, but I don’t think that term would have been appropriate in this instance Anyway, I knew there had to be some kind of story to tell when I saw that bra blowin’ in the wind on Lakeshore this morning. It’s a long stretch, I know, but, yes, the bra is all just a lead-up to tell my faithful readers that it’s my 40th anniversary in reporting, and sorry to say - as you can see from this piece - my reporting hasn’t gotten any better in all that time. n
