Local business leaders Marc Massari, with Raymond James & Associates, and Chuck Smyth, of Chasmar Insurance, have volunteered thousands of hours over the past 16 years planning the PV Street Fair & Music Festival! Kudos and many thanks to the tireless Chuck and Marc team, the Street Fair Committee, Board of Directors and Chamber Staff. Photo by CL!X Portrait Studios. Fun at the Fair! Photos say it all! Deena Knight from the Daily Breeze and Kim Sutton of Malaga Bank rock the beer garden with the PV Young Professionals; Bark Busters shows off its dog training skills with young volunteers; a fearless flyer soars above the carnival; dogs and cats find new families under the Big Tent; and lovely, local ladies enjoy the day together at the PV Street Fair! All of this was made possible by our generous presenting sponsor Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. T he Palos Verdes community came together last weekend in that once a year, unique event – The Palos Verdes Street Fair. Over 40,000 residents and visitors (traveling from as far away as Temecula, Pasadena and the Valley), enjoyed two days of Palos Verdes hospitality and fun. The kids’ screams of delight at the jam-packed carnival reminded the crowd that summer is here! With over 200 hand-selected vendors showcasing artisan crafts, local nonprofit organizations, and commercial exhibitors, there was truly something for everyone. Two diverse food courts, an F-5 Fighter jet display, continuous live entertainment on two stages, a light-hearted dog show, pet adoptions, and a free petting zoo and pony rides for the children rounded out the weekend. Besides being a ton of fun, the Street Fair gives back to the community in several ways. Starting with Friday’s Teen Night at the Carnival, the Chamber of Commerce will donate over $1000 in proceeds from the evening to the Peninsula Education Foundation. In addition, the Chamber’s Young Professional Group collected an additional $500 for the Peninsula Education Foundation, all while cheerfully volunteering at the Beer & Wine tent. The proceeds from the dog show registrations, which totaled $800, were donated by the Chamber to GRACE Animal Rescue. We are still waiting for final numbers to come in from our six animal rescue and adoption groups, but many very happy families adopted pets on Saturday afternoon. And, in the very generous spirit of giving that is characteristic of the Palos Verdes community, over 60 pints of blood were donated at the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance bloodmobile during the Fair weekend. This fabulous event would not be possible without the support of the Chamber’s many Street Fair sponsors, especially the presenting sponsor for the Fair, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. The Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize and thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and the entire community for being a part of this unique celebration right in the heart of the peninsula! Plans are already underway for next year’s 25th Anniversary Street Fair, to be held on June 9 and 10, 2012. Contact the Chamber office to be a part of what promises to be a truly spectacular celebration!

Cynthia Wang, a 2010 graduate of Peninsula High School, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Palos

Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. This scholarship will help to fund Cynthia’s study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she is a Business major. Cynthia also received a scholarship for her freshman year of study in 2010/11. “Thank you to the Chamber for continuing to support my education,” said Cynthia as she learned of the Chamber Board’s decision. Cynthia is double-majoring in Marketing and Management with a specialization in International Business. During her initial year at the University of Illinois she was employed by the campus’ Business Career Service and the Office of

Information Management. She has been selected to work this summer as a student tour guide for prospective students, a coveted position for student leaders. But, before beginning her summer position she will travel to Brazil to for two weeks with other students and faculty to learn more about the Brazilian culture and that country’s contributions to the global business market. In addition to working and studying, Cynthia made time to fundraise for Relay for Life through her service on the Business Honors Student Board. “We are honored to contribute to Cynthia’s development as a business professional,” says Kathy Gould, PVP Chamber Chairman of the Board. “Providing scholarship to students is one of the many ways the Chamber’s membership provides benefits to its community.”
