As I write this it is Tuesday evening and we have just finished a Deacon George Social Justice Board meeting. The Board has awarded the following grants: $5,000.00 to ACCESS of West Michigan.

ACCESS is the organization that coordinates the social service assistance in the greater Kent County ar-ea, assisting those who have need for food, financial assistance in avoiding having their electricity or water turned off, sponsoring the annual Hunger Walk, and oth-er general assistance to the poor.

$5,000.00 to Steepletown Neighborhood Services.

Steepletown is the combination of the Basilica of St. Adalbert, St. James Church, and St. Mary Church, on the west side of Grand Rapids. Neighborhood Ser-vices is their ministry to the poor and needy. Our grant to them will be used to assist them in their JobStart pro-gram of taking young men off the street and teaching them the skills that they need to avoid a life of poverty or crime and to be able to gain long-term employment, and opportunity perhaps that they did not have given broken family backgrounds.

$3,000.00 to D.A.Blodgett - St. John's.

The grant will be used to assist those children in the residential program who have come to St. John's due to the experience of the trauma of abuse or neglect.

$2,000.00 to the Glenmary Sisters. The Glenmary Sisters work with the poor and the needy in those areas of Tennessee and Kentucky which are popularly known as Appalachia. Their work includes not only evangelization but also feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and sheltering the home-less.

On a somewhat related note, this week you should be receiving the annual financial report and letter from the Parish Finance Council with regard to the finan-cial status of the Parish. One thing that the Finance Council did not include in the report but wanted me to make sure that you are aware of is the rainy day fund that we have created for capital (i.e., building and grounds), needs. This is the fund from which we took the money to pay for the new air conditioner for the Church this past summer. The plan is to have an amount in the fund equal to one month's expenses for the Parish (about $86,000) for any emergencies that arrive so that we are not in a panic as we were in years past with leaking roofs and no money to repair them. The fund is funded with any money we receive if we ex-ceed our CSA assessment each year, and after we paid off the last debt we have continued to budget the month-ly debt payment to go into this fund to help rebuild it for the next need. As of the end of September this fund has just over $51,000 so hopefully we will not be caught un-prepared for whatever our next need will be -- be it boil-ers, crumbling bricks on the church, or whatever. As always, thank you for your continuing support.

Cardinal Dolan of New York and former President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) said in his blog: “There is no more tried-and-true way of passing on our Catholic faith to our kids than by sacrificing to put them in a Catholic school. Data proves they persevere in the faith at higher rates, pray better, are more faithful to Sunday Mass, live gospel values, are more generous to their parish, even have happier marriages, vol-unteer more, and transmit the faith to their own children, than those not in a Catholic school.” (http://blog.archny.org/?p=2470)

Your Vote Matters Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6, make sure you get out and vote! The Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) and Michigan Bishops do not take a stance on can-didates up for election, but they are providing guidance on the three ballot pro-posals:

Proposal 1: should recreational marijuana use and growth be legalized in the state?

Proposal 2: should Michigan reform its redistricting process? Proposal 3: should voter registration and other voting processes be revised?

The MCC Board and Bishops urge a “No” vote on Proposal 1. They have not taken a position on Proposals 2 and 3. Visit micatholic.org or dioceseofgrandrapids.org for more information on how to prepare to vote as a Catholic.
