    To the parents.

If you give this book and your kids priority for the first 3 weeks of

school. You can almost put your kids academic success on

autopilot. They will know what you expect and they will live up to

    those expectations.

I have provided a check sheet at the end of this book

This book is a guide to help you transform your students from

being a low performing or average student to an Excellent

student. It will also motivate and help hard working students stay

focused on the goals that htey have set for themselves.

However, your child needs you now more than ever.

    Introduction

21 days to become an Excellent Student and today is your

day 1. I already know what you are asking yourself. Why 21days? Research shows that we are creatures of habit and

that many of our habits can be made or broken if repeated

for ONLY 21 days. Many people have used this method to

get into the best shape of their lives, learn something new, or

    even stop a bad habit.

    Now its your turn.

Aristole said,We are what we continually do therefore

Excellence is not an act, but a habit. So in order for you to

become an Excellent student, its just a matter of creatingexcellent habits. (Yep, its just that easy. :) But it is also just

that hard. I will not sugar coat it, this may be one of the most

difficult challenges you will ever face, but the rewards will far

out way the work that is required. I am a living witness. I will

tell you about my 21 day challenge to become an excellent

student a little later. Actually my challenge turned into a year

and a half long pursuit before I was were I wanted to be

educationally. But, it was well worth it.

    Introduction continued

Two more things before we begin.

#1: I need you to say this sentence 3 times out loud,

as loud as you can. I am Committed to 21 Days of

being a Real Student. I need you to hear yourself

say these words and become COMMITTED. Many

people start programs and they are pumped at the

beginning, but as soon as it gets tough or they run

into a few obstacles, they quit. I need you to Bring

Everything You Got, for 21 days.

#2 : Since I dont really know you yet, I cant fullytrust you words. So I need you to sign this agreement

on the next page and give it to someone that will hold

    you accountable.

    Commitment + Accountability =

    Excellent Student.

    Become A Student

In order to become excellent at something we must know what it

is that we are striving for. So what is a student? I ask the kids in

my class this at the beginning of the school year. Most of them

say a person who learns. That is partially correct. The dictionary

defines student as a person who is Engaged in Learning and a

    Person who Studies.

Then I ask them how many of you were students last year?

Many are honest and say that they must not have been a student,

because they rarely studied and they rarely learned anything. I

am telling you that if you are going to be Excellent you will have

    to become a student.

Also a student has the resources that are needed to succeed. I

will cover this in the next chapter.

    RESOURCES

    Comparison:

    The Football Player

What are the resources you expect to see a real football

player with? (Cleats, Helmet, Pads, Jersey, Mouthpiece) If

he is missing any of these items, coaches would question his

seriousness about the game of football. The real footballplayers shows up EVERY GAME with the resources they

need to be a successful football player.

he or she is missing any of these items, teachers would

    Resources continued

Here is a basic list of your Success Resources:

-A notebook for each class.-10 pencils: Just in case one breaks you have 9 more.

-3 Pens: Prepared to write down information that you would like to

    keep.

-3 Highlighters: Used to bring emphasis to important notes and topics

    discussed in class.

    -1 Planner

    Laptop (Optional)

You MUST secure all of your supplies in order to transform from being

an AVERAGE studentto an EXCELLENCEstudent. If you are still in

grade school, and you do not have the resources you need, beg for

them. Thats right, BEG. If you wanted a pair of Jordans or to go on a

school trip, you wouldnt mind begging. You would not take no for an

answer. If your parents cant afford it, ask another family member. If

they have an excuse, ask a teacher at school. Bottom line, Get the

    resources you need.

    Success Team

Life is like basketball and football. You can not win trying to do it

alone. You are not a boxer, but even boxers have a team of

trainers to get them ready for their next fight.

Also you need to understand you need to be very selective about

who you put on your success team. Only allow people who will

encourage you, be truthful with you, give you wise advice, and

    invest in you.

    Get an Education

My mom would tell me all the time to get a good education, but I

never really realized what she was asking me to actually do. I

was going to school everyday and turning in my work, but was I

really getting an education. As I got older, I understood, what a

GOOD EDUCATION was. She not only wanted me to get good

grades, she wanted to UNDERSTAND and be able to APPLY

(use) what I learned in the real world.

Listen, let me be clear about and education.

    1. You are responsible for your own education.

    2. Middle School and High School are just step to help you

    get to DREAM.

    3. The more EDUCATION you have, likely the more money

you will make. (Remember, Getting and Education means

to understand and apply what you have learned.

    Set Your Goals

When I think about setting goals I think about going on a trip. We

dont just jump in the car and start driving and hope that we will

end up in the right place.

First, we select a destination. So what your destination? Where

do you want to end up? You have to be very specific.

For example: Josh wants to be a dentist in Houston Texas by

the age of 22. He would like to have a wife and 2 kids and live in

a 4 bedroom home by the age of 25.

Second, we would plan our mode of transportation. How would

we get to our destination? Plane, Car, if he Boat, or etc.

Example: Josh has been researching colleges and their tuition

cost since 8th grade. He is in the Band and he found out that

plays his instrument well, colleges will offer him a scholarship tocollege. He also knows that with a high GPA and a

    21 DAYS UNTIL EXCELLENCE

Many people claim that they want to be successful but manyare scared of the Gate-keeps; HARD WORK AND

PERSONAL SACRIFICE. Real success will come when you

pay these two gatekeepers FULL PRICE. There are no

bargain prices and SUCCESS will never go on sale. Now

before we get started, I need you to research and write

down the definition to these 2 words:

DECIDE-As a man thinketh, so is he.

    Proverbs 23:7

-The man who says he can and

the man who says he cant areusually both right.

That means that the power to become an excellent

student rest with you. I need you today to just decide.

Its just that simple. You may be saying yeah right.Have you ever seen a team who battles back and win.

Part of the reason they are able to do such an amazing

feat, is partly due to DECIDING not to quit.

Once you make a firm decision, your actions will follow.

How? Because, the body parts are only tools for the

    brain.

    Your Reason

If you are still reading, then, I believe that you have made thedecision to take the 21 Day Challenge. Great!!

Now you need a strong reason. This is key, because as

soon as you decided to improve your life, there will beobstacles and forces forming to keep you from achievingyour goals.

Here is the question. Why do you go to school?

I want you to think of the real reason you come to school

everyday. I know that when many students are asked thisquestion, they answer with that old cliche answer. To learn. Most of the time, this is not the whole truth. Some of youcome to socialize, cause trouble, eat free food, play sports,

and various other reasons. But what is your real REASONfor going to school?

It must be deeply rooted and be something that you care a

great deal about, because if it is a surface answer, like ToLearn you will have many excuses as to why you are not anExcellent Student. Dont get me wrong, coming to school to

learn is important, but in most cases it is not enough tocompel you to work hard.

What is your REAL reason for coming to school?

    1. I want to use my education as the vehicle that drives me and

my family out of poverty.2. I want to be Valedictorian or Salutatorian of my school.

    3. I want to become a professional in sports or another career field.

    4. I am tired of just being an AVERAGE student.

Cut out the reason card below, write your reason on it, & have it

laminated. Keep it with you everyday as a reminder.

When you want to turn in sloppy homework, look at your reason card.

When you want to not study, look at your reason card. When you dont

like the teacher and you want to skip class, look at your reason card.

When you want to give any lame EXCUSE,as to why you are not being

EXCELLENT, look at your reason card.

    Excuses

While I have your mind on the word excuses, let me give you

    a simple yet powerful definition.

Excuses are tools of the incompetent, that buildsmonuments of nothingness, and those who use them

seldom amount to anything in life. (Go to this link and

watch the 2:25 youtube video about Excuses) http://youtu.

    Examples of Student Excuses:

    1. I am late because________

    2. I didnt study because________

    3. I cant do this work because______

    4. What are your

    excuses________________________________________________________________________________

Now let the excuses go and think about how you can still

move forward in spite of your obstacles.

    Excuse to Quit

The following story took place while I was in college.I enrolled in a higher level Business Math Class. I had

decided that I was going to work hard and pass all of myclasses with either an A or B. Life loves when you makecommitments like that, because it will through obstacles inyour way to see just how committed you are.

I grabbed my seat up front, and the professor walked in.

She was a short Asian woman who had a bright smile andshe seemed to be really nice. Then she began to speak tothe class about the requirements. As she was speaking, Iwas saying to myself, I can not understand anything she is

saying. She was speaking, but it was obvious that Englishwas not her first language.

    Excuse to Quit

Class began and we started working on Math problems

that I could not comprehend and a professior that I could

not understand . I looked up and to the sky and asked

God why? The class continued for days and I knew that

if I did not get some help, I would fail this class. I started

raising my hand and asking questions about every

problem. She realized that I wanted to learn, but that I

was having a hard time understanding her and the

problems.. She stopped class and said, Mr. Williams, I

see you want to learn, however I cant keep answering

questions of every problem. But, if you would like, you

may come to my office at 4:00 and work with my grad

assistant. That was a perfect idea. (So I thought!!)

    Excuse to Quit

I arrived to my professors office and she directed me to the study

room. I went inside and waited for the graduate assistant. He

was Asian as well and he was not able to speak fluent English

ethier. My heart drops and I really think God is testing me. He

begins to try to explain the problems and I become frustrated and

so does he. I stayed for my hour and learned what I could. But I

was at a cross roads. I could just quit or try pass this class with a

low grade., I mean what else could I do. I thought to myself,

This is a reasonable EXCUSE. I can not understand what the

professor nor the grad assistant is saying. At that point it was

time to be responsible for my own education. I decided to dig in

even deeper and study even harder. I also found students in the

class that I could study with. I will get my A out of this class, no

matter what. I spent hours on 1 and 2 problems, until I

understood the concepts. It took a lot of grinding and overcoming

obstacles, but I got my A.

Forget an Excuse and look for ways to overcome. I know I said it

    Whining Dog Story

There was an old man sitting on the porch rocking in his rocking

chair as he would do every day. His old hound dog continued to

whine and moan as if he was in pain The mail man walked up

and gave him his mail and said sir why is your dog whining and

moaning. He said, Sir he is sitting on a nail. The mail man

said, Why wont he move? The old man looked up and said,

He is not hurting bad enough.

Are you hurting enough or are you still just whining and

complaining everyday. I do not know what your personalstruggles are. It may be a bad relationship with your parents,

mean students at school, a subject that you cannot master. That

all may be true, but what are you going to do different in order to

    make your situation better.

    Dont Rest on Your

    Talent

This chapter is for the students who are already working hard and

have become an Excellent Student. You are on your way to

achieving your goals. Dont get side tracked by students who are

slacking off, or those who are not engaged at all. Thier dream is

not your dream. Their goals are not your goals. You focus on

you. DOnt rest on your talent. Trust me, their is someone right

now who might be as smart as you, they might not have the

resources that you have, They might not have the loving family

and support that you have, and they might not be as talented as

you are. But they are tired of being at the bottom and a fire to

succeed has been ignited in them.

This type of person is hard to stop. Your talent may have got you

to this point to where you are good. But they will out work you to

greatness. You can not peak in middle school or high school.

Again dont rest on your talent. If the teacher ask for a one page

    report, you do 1 - 2.

Will Smith said it best. You might be smarter than me. You

might be faster than me, You might even be more talented than

me. But you will not OUT WORK ME!
