Aluminothermic Welding

AutoSeal® moulds are Pandrol’s newest aluminothermic welding innovation that streamlines the welding process. They have been stirring up exciting over in the European market, thanks to the significant time savings they invoke.

The built-in felt expands during the preheating phase of welding, creating a tight seal between the mould and rail. This completely removes the need for luting with paste or sand, whilst preventing welding leaks. They are the world’s first self-sealing moulds and bring numerous benefits including faster welding speeds, enhanced welder ergonomics, increased reliability, and reduced waste.

Put to the test

In 2020 as part of renewing rail in a tunnel on the metro system, Nexus in the UK needed 140 aluminothermic welds to be completed in a tight timescale. Possession times were short, with access to the track from 1am to 4am, Sunday to Thursday.

Railway contractor GPX Engineering was appointed to deliver the welding services, including inspection and certification. Teams of welders began work with the AutoSeal® moulds and were very happy with the results.

The future is near

‘It’s much quicker and more efficient than traditional methods and the failure rate was zero,’ says Paul Marshall, Technical Lead at GPX. ‘Our welders loved it – in particular, taking out the luting procedure makes the welding process so much easier and less stressful. And there are clear safety benefits every step of the way.’

FasteningSystems

Pandrol rail fastenings have been used on all of the major heavy haul railways in the world with a track record covering more than four decades and extending across all continents.

Our systems are in service on axle loads up to 40 tonnes and performing in climates ranging from the exceptionally dry arid deserts of North West Australia and the Middle East, through the humid tropics of Africa to the extreme cold of Canada and Scandinavia.

Testimony to Pandrol’s technology is one of the great dedicated iron ore railways of the world at Hamersley Iron, which operates iron ore trains of up to 35,000 tonnes between Paraburdoo and Dampier in North West Australia, and transports

90 million gross tonnes per year, and which first operated on timber sleepers with Pandrol clips in 1978.

The performance of the Pandrol clips was such that when the original timber sleepers were replaced with concrete sleepers in 1986, the original fastenings were recycled and reused on the new concrete sleepers. All track extensions have been with Pandrol clips and there have been no maintenance or operational problems to date.

In recent years, Pandrol Fastclip has been used increasingly by heavy haul operators, with unprecedented use of high output mechanisation for installation and maintenance that delivers lower installation costs for contractors and

repeats those efficiencies in stressing operations, re-railing and rail maintenance activity throughout the life of the fastening system.

Pandrol Fastclip has been installed in Saudi Arabia since 2010 on the world’s longest dedicated heavy haul line and continues to be used in current projects. Each 2.8 km long mineral train on the 2000 km, North South Line consists of 5 locomotives and 160 wagons with a payload of up to 16,000 tonnes per train.
