2020–21 CREATING INDUSTRY’SFUTURE LEADERS
“The achievements of the Scholars of the Industry Leaders Fund were a highlight of the Awards Ceremony I officiated at last year. It is really pleasing to see more companies and their leaders recognising that investment in the leader’s brain is likely to generate an ROI at least equal to and often far in excess of investment in equipment or the IOT. The impressive results generated by leaders who have undertaken courses supported by ILF funding is proof that these enlightened companies are on the right track.”

know someone with future leadership potential? The Industry Leaders Fund (ILF) offers grants of up to $50,000 to leaders and future leaders of South Australian industry. This funding helps successful applicants to achieve their full potential and fast-track their career success by building knowledge and experience.
wealth-creating opportunities for our stateILF Scholars will be equipped to re-establish a “head office” mentality for our state by generating world class, value-adding opportunities that create wealth and support economic prosperity.
who are we?In 2009, the Industry Leaders Fund was established, financed by accumulated surpluses from its former role as a state-based apprentice training scheme. It was given a new role to foster industry leadership in South Australia. Now in its eleventh year, the fund has awarded 199 grants, with a total value of $2,356,000.
In addition to paying these grants, the fund has paid all its operating costs and more than maintained the value of the initial investment in real terms, indexed by CPI.
recognition and achievementThe significant growth and diversity in ILF applications is testament to the quality of the fund and the widespread industry support for leadership training that achieves real results for our state. The ILF has cemented its position as the leading fund in its field. We seek to under promise and over deliver.
Our application process is comprehensive yet uncomplicated, providing added incentive for the best candidates to apply.
private fundingThe ILF is a private sector non-government organisation with an eminent board of 10 Honorary members. We are fully private-sector funded from investment earnings on a prudently structured portfolio. Grants up to $50,000 may be offered to successful applicants to develop their leadership skills, experience and knowledge through research, education and/or training at nominated best-practice education facilities in Australia and abroad.

Geoff believes true leaders exhibit vision, superior communication skills, passion, a powerful drive to succeed, strong inter-personal skills, charisma, inspirational team building capacities, strong moral ethics and a willingness to contribute to their community.
“This year several applicants provided themost exciting picture of the future in theILF’s history. At least three new Scholars articulated an intention to make their business or product recognised as the best in the world. South Australians have traditionally been the first and best in the world, but for many years shy to say so. This new willingness to be bold seems to signal a change in the confidence of South Australian business leaders.”

THE COLIN J PETERS AM MEMORIAL AWARD
This newly-created award is made possible through a generous donation from Scott Peters and Nicole Peake, in the memory of their father, Colin Peters AM (1943 - 2019).
Colin John Peters AM (“Col”) was the inaugural Chairman and driving force of three visionary leaders with the insight and foresight to create the Industry Leaders Fund. Col, with David McNeil as Treasurer and Stephen Myatt of EEASA, saw that South Australia needed a boost in private sector activity. Together they identified that the ingredient most needed was confident, competent industry leadership in the private sector.
They had formed what was effectively the executive committee of the board of the Engineering Employers Association of SA Group Training Scheme (“AIGTS”) which on 30 June 2009 ceased to operate as a Group Training Scheme. The Board had to decide whether the Not for Profit AIGTS would use the $8m of retained earnings to do something similar or pay the money to the State Treasury. A recommendation crafted by the three under Col’s guidance led the board to conclude that the funds should be devoted to developing leaders in SA’s wealth-creating private sector businesses. They believed that appropriate developmental opportunities would enable these leaders to grow their businesses bigger and faster than would have been the case without that opportunity, and the Industry Leaders Fund was born.
Everyone who knew Col knows that in life he was a big man in every way. He played a huge role in starting the ILF, he featured large as the guiding hand of the ILF during the formative years, he played a big role in setting the conditions that would enable the ILF to become an enduring initiative, and until his passing he played a major role in its development. He worked up front and behind the scenes and always offered inspirational thoughts and positive words of encouragement. The big man has left a big legacy that should endure well into the future if not forever. The Board and management of the ILF understand the responsibility he has left for us.
Col was a good friend, mentor to many and esteemed industry champion who will be greatly missed, but not forgotten thanks to the magnanimous generosity of his children, Scott Peters and Nicole Peake.

CriteriaThe Scholar who is to receive the award is determined by the ILF Board based on a series of criteria which epitomise the values of the ILF and the life values and community contribution of Colin Peters AM.
The primary condition is that the Scholar must be engaged some way in manufacturing which includes any business using components, parts or raw materials to make a finished good or fits the definition of manufacturing as it may evolve in future. The selected Scholar will be one who also best satisfies a combination of some or all of the following characteristics:
1. Is considered to have the potential to make the biggest difference in terms of employment and wealth generation in South Australia;
2. Best epitomises the ILF values and is considered to be a high achiever in contributing to the goals of the ILF;
3. Invests time and/or resources in developing the industrial and leadership talents of younger members of the workforce;
4. Contributes to the success of industry and economic development in South Australia through voluntary contributions in industry associations or other like bodies;
5. Has overcome adversity or disadvantage to reach a position of leadership;
6. Proven business leadership capabilities in contributing to community activities and outcomes;
7. Demonstrates a desire to develop their leadership skills through a combination of an official course and a more practical learning experience such as a relevant tour.
8
Inaugural recipientAfter careful consideration the Board felt that Anthony Kittel was the stand-out Scholar for the first ever award of the Colin J Peters AM Memorial Award. Anthony Kittel’s Redarc is engaged in modern manufacturing and has expanded by over 400% since receiving his grant. Anthony has contributed actively to the goals of the ILF including as inaugural Chairman of the Scholars Committee, he actively mentors and supports other business leaders and workforce training opportunities, both at Redarc and in the community. He is energetically engaged in industry bodies including as President of the Ai Group SA Branch Advisory Committee, he was brought up in modest circumstances in Port Augusta, and has contributed to community activities including through committees and other activities such as fund raising walks etc.
The ILF congratulates Anthony on being selected for this award.
Nature of AwardMonetary grants will be provided from the earnings on the donated capital after an allowance is made for CPI to ensure the real value of the corpus is maintained. The award will normally be made each year and may be for a monetary amount for a grant applicant in that year, or it may be made to a current Scholar who has not applied for a grant, in which case no actual grant amount is awarded.
9
INDUSTRY LEADERS FUND FOUNDATION
The ILF is increasingly recognised as the foremost educational grant provider in South Australia, attracting applications from exceptional future leaders and entrepreneurs. This demand is exceeding the fund’s capacity and we are developing new models that will enable us to support deserving applicants well into the future.
To supplement the ILF’s capacity we unveiled the Industry Leaders Fund Foundation to provide a flexible structure for committed individuals and businesses who support our vision for a strong South Australian economy. Contributions directly assist future leaders to make a real difference to the state of play in South Australia in coming years.
The Industry Leaders Fund was established in 2009 with adequate endowment funds to ensure a perpetual flow of cash to support our annual grants program. The prime movers were three visionary leaders, Chairman Col Peters, Treasurer David McNeil and Australian Industry Group SA Director, Stephen Myatt. They entrusted the realisation of the vision to Geoff Vogt who commenced as CEO in February 2010 after an extensive search.
The first awards were presented in November 2010 to Anthony Kittel, Managing Director of Redarc and Christine Stock who had demonstrated outstanding talent and leadership potential during an apprenticeship with The Engineering Employers Association Group Training Scheme.
The Industry Leaders Fund Foundation accepts contributions and bequests from individuals and businesses and allows for tax deductibility. It has been developed to ensure your contribution is tailored to meet your specific needs.
The Industry Leaders Fund Foundation is administered by the trustee, the Industry Leaders Fund, and attracts no administration fees or charges. One hundred percent of the contributions received go to successful applicants.
If you would like to partner with us to help ensure the state’s future innovation, wealth and prosperity, please get in touch. We invite you to share your thoughts with the CEO of the Industry Leaders Fund in the strictest confidence.
By 2013, there were 35 Scholars and the Board felt it was time to establish a network of Scholars. Anthony Kittel agreed to be the inaugural chairman of the Scholars committee and under his guidance a program of Scholar events was organised. The number and range of Scholar activities and events has grown under successive chairs, Eddie Lane, Kris Lloyd and Darren Turner. These activities are highly valued and the prospect of joining the Scholars Network has become an important motivator for many leaders to seek a grant from the ILF.
A noticeable change over time has been the industry makeup of the Scholars, from the early years where established manufacturers of traditional physical products predominated to an increasing proportion of new age industries including those producing intangible intellectual property. This trend is in line with the makeup of industry in South Australia.
The Board has focused on measuring outcomes to drive performance. Financially we strive to maintain the real value of the $8m initial fund after grants and the costs of running the fund. We have been successful in this aim and the current value of the fund, as at 31 August 2020, was $11.5m, after grants of more than $1.7m and paying all administration costs.
The ILF adopted an “under-promise” and “over-deliver” approach from the beginning. Promotion has been by word-of-mouth and targeted personal approach rather than through mass media or large functions. Strong candidates have been attracted this way and the results of their endeavours post ILF funded study course are measured through an annual survey. Recognition of their achievements has been achieved through multiple public awards that are documented elsewhere in this brochure. A really strong measure is the number of jobs generated in the businesses of our Scholars since course completion. The first survey was conducted in 2016 when 142 jobs had been created in South Australia. By 2020 new jobs created in SA had increased to 2285. The average grant dollar cost per South Australian job declined from $7,600 in 2016 to $800 in 2020. This is much lower than other job creation programs in South Australia and favourable comparison has been drawn against worldwide benchmarks.
All this has been made possible by a dedicated hard-working Board, chaired initially by Col Peters, followed by David McNeil and most recently by Paul Haysman.

ILFScholars Network update
Powerful membersThe ILFSN is a specialised networking group made up of grant recipients who have operated successful South Australian businesses and achieved excellent results in the ILF leadership test, which is based on the same principles as the leadership test applied to Rhodes Scholars.
Scholars have studied, or have committed to study, at one of the world’s leading business schools.
NetworkThe Industry Leaders Fund Scholars Network (ILFSN) was established by the ILF Board and a group of interested Scholars. The name reflects the commitment of its members to capitalise on their collective work, life experiences and ILF-funded learning opportunity. This will, in turn, contribute to the economic well being of South Australia.

Key EventsDuring 2019/2020 the Industry Leaders Fund Scholars Network hosted a number of leading edge events around a hiatus period due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
To celebrate ILF’s 10th Anniversary, a Christmas Drinks Cocktail Function was held in December, sponsored by Grant Thornton. The event featured a tour of 1414 Degrees Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS), at the Glenelg Wastewater Plant, before guests relocated to the spectacular SA Sea Rescue Squadron HQ for sunset drinks, canapes and networking.
A second cocktail function was hosted at the Mayfair Hotel in September, sponsored by Morgan Stanley. Explorer Katie Sarah was guest speaker, sharing inspirational insights into leadership in extreme environments.
Katie is the first woman in the world to complete the ‘seven-summits’, climbing each of the highest peaks on each continent.
A breakfast training event was held in February, with Michael Masterson, managing director of EverEdge. Michael spoke about Intangible Assets: Driving Success, Failure & Valuations. The session was well attended with the Scholars reporting the presenter and content were outstanding. The event was held at and sponsored by William Buck.
ILF’s first exclusive webinar event was held in June, hosted by Grant Thornton. Featuring Dr Ian Norton, Global Emergency Response Expert, the session focused on “reopening your workplace”.
Strong interest was shown in the Audi Solitaire Drive Day held in August 2019, with 16 Scholars driving 8 different Audis up the freeway to Stirling, then through Echunga, Kangarilla and onto Angove Family Winemakers where they enjoyed a wonderful meal.
The second Scholars mentoring program concluded with a social wrap up hosted by Deloitte in February 2020.
Sponsors and Supporters Grant Thornton and William Buck are major sponsors of the Scholars network. Their generous support enabled our Scholars to receive top quality, leading edge training without charge. ILF Scholars continue to express their great gratitude for the backing of these sponsors. This new knowledge flows to improved business performance and in turn to a better economy in South Australia. Major supporters are Morgan Stanley, Deloitte and EY and their assistance is much appreciated.

pastscholarsOur ILF Scholars have enjoyed outstanding achievements over the years, reinforcing the value of our grants program to individuals, companies and the South Australian economy. Here is a snapshot of some of these achievements during the past year:
Matthew Stead’s new venture, Ping Services, graduated from start-up to early stage venture as evidenced by a capital raising of $1.3 million and signing four commercial contracts with US wind turbine companies, all in a tough COVID19 market.
Jason Nagy reported his group, which includes the Joanna Chronis-helmed LogicPlus, has grown more than 50% in the past year - significantly contributing to the SA economy. He is now searching for a new building, further supporting jobs and wealth creation in SA.
Under the leadership of CEO Alf Ianiello supported by Zoe Detmold and John Scott, Detmold Group went from idea to full production of surgical standard face masks in under three months.
Chantale Millard was appointed CEO of Longtable Group in December 2019. It later changed its name to the more recognisable Maggie Beer Holdings, shifted its head office from Melbourne to Adelaide to generate significant cost savings and turned around operating results from loss to profit.
Kelly Baker-Jamieson worked with Detmold’s innovation lab to develop environmental packaging aimed at reducing landfill generated by her Edible Blooms business, one of Australia’s biggest online chocolate and fruit bouquet gifting companies. The cooperation between the two SA companies is an example of the benefits of ILF Scholars networking functions. ILF Scholars at Detmold include Alf Ianiello, Zoe Detmold and John Scott, as is Kelly.
Jim Grose’s Axiom Precision Manufacturing has been so successful in winning defence and other contracts that a new factory addition to double the available floorspace was opened.
Naracoorte based Minijumbuk boosted turnover significantly due to buyers preferencing quality Australian made products over cheaper, inferior imports. Minijumbuk showed its community spirit by providing $350 wool bedding packages to SA bushfire victims, demonstrating the value of one of the key ILF grant applicant selection criteria.
Redarc, managed by Owner Anthony Kittel supported by Ben Marsh and Jo Hugman, continued its long run of award successes this year, winning the top Manufacturers Monthly Endeavour award, Manufacturer of the Year as well as the Global Supply Chain Integration Award.
Kris Lloyd’s entrepreneurial DNA was tested and proven at Woodside Cheese Wrights during the COVID pandemic when it successfully pivoted in next to no time from food service sales to online sales. She also found ways to use products such as apple cider that would have gone to waste to produce new and delicious variants of cheese.
Kris Lloyd was rewarded for years of hard work and mentoring support to members of the cheesemaking industry amongst other things with the award of an AM in the Queens Birthday honours.

Confidence in Myriota and its management team, including David Haley, Iain Cartwright and Julia Johnson, enabled it to raise $28 million in capital to support its ongoing growth. The funds were invested by well respected sources including Boeing, Singtel, former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and leading venture capital firms.
In late 2019, SA Mushrooms opened a new growing facility, doubling its workforce to 100 and announcing support for scientific research to develop sunscreen from mushroom waste.
Nova Group, with leadership support provided by Rebecca McDonald, Cher Min Teo, Dr Sarah Cannard and Bradley Spencer, opened its new Nova IGS Network to provide space ground connectivity for small satellite operators with the site now being used by international clients.
Thomas Foods International announced and advanced plans to build a large replacement plant at Murray Bridge utilising the world’s best practice equipment to ensure maximum efficiency and animal husbandry, despite attractive offers to relocate from interstate governments. The design of the new plant is being overseen by Nekta Nikolaou.
Codan delivered a record profit substantially due to the success of its Minelab business which is managed by Peter Charlesworth with technical support from Jock Duncan.
Oscar Fiorinotto’ s Supashock beat worldwide competitors to supply hi-tech shock absorbers to all competitors in the Australian V8 Supercars series.
Wirra Wirra’s plans, developed under CEO Andrew Kay, for the first five star luxury accommodation in McLaren Vale received regulatory approval for construction. In another innovation Wirra Wirra launched the first wine-based gift registry in Australia.
Dale Roberts, KOJO Entertainment’s Group Managing Director, announced a partnership with Stampede, an independent US movie studio started by a film executive responsible for overseeing the Harry Potter franchise. Under the deal, irrespective of where the film or television projects are shot, all intellectual property and post-production work will be based in South Australia.
Angove Family Winemakers, steered by Victoria and Richard Angove, was awarded Business of the Year at the Australian Organic Industry Awards. The awards recognise businesses committed to organic and sustainable practices across different sectors.
Grant Wilckens and Amanda Baldwin at Discovery Parks utilised the services of fellow Scholar Dale Roberts at local production house, Kojo to make a commercial to boost demand against a backdrop of reduced turnover due to the bushfires and COVID19. The business has continued to show growth strength despite the headwinds.
Rising Sun Picture’s Alana Newell, Zonge Engineering and Research Organisation’s Kelly Keates, Supashock’s Oscar Fiorinotto, and REDARC’s Anthony Kittel, Ben Marshand Jo Hugman were named as major award winners at SA’s Exporter of the Year awards.
Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority, led by CEO Adam Faulkner was highlighted as the national leader in its field by the Federal Government and the World Wide Fund for Nature.
Jeremy Hawkes’ Bowhill Engineering won the Regional Showcase Award for Industry while Kimberley Ferguson’s family business, Holla-Fresh, received the runner up trophy in InDaily’s Regional Showcase Awards.

“The Company Director Course that I undertook gave me the ability to navigate my way through the challenges of 2020, both bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic. Having a clear understanding of my balance sheets, corporate governance and how to manage staff, customers and the broader community were all areas where I was able to draw insights from my learnings.” — Kris Lloyd Woodside Cheese Wrights
Potential applicants are welcome to contact ILF CEO Geoff Vogt on 0457 900 202 or [email protected] to discuss whether their chosen field and ideas are likely to meet the ILF criteria for success. Geoff is keen to speak to as many applicants as possible and will provide guidance to help candidates maximise their chances of lodging a winning application.
Every year, successful applicants often speak to Geoff several times to better understand the application process. While guidance will be provided, the content of any submission remains the responsibility of the applicant.
ILF Scholars are often willing to advise applicants about the process and how they selected their chosen course of study. Geoff is happy to facilitate these contacts.

HOW THE ILF SUPPORTS APPLICANTS
APPLICATION CLOSING DATE FOR 2021
Employers of choice normally offer meaningful personal development opportunities.
Supporting talented employees to apply for an ILF grant can provide a significant benefit to an employer’s training structure.ILF CEO, Geoff Vogt, will meet employers and their employees to explain and clarify how the ILF grant program operates and how applicants can improve their prospects of submitting a successful application.
In addition, Geoff is happy to address industry functions to explain the ILF in general, and he can arrange for ILF Scholars to speak at functions or to groups of people. This is often very constructive because they can explain the process, their reasons for applying and the benefits from their personal point of view.
Employers are welcome to contact Geoff on 0457 900 202, 8394 0016 or [email protected] to make the appropriate arrangements.
