GOALJoin your colleagues and gain the latest updates and practice guidelines in cardiovascular care! This full-day symposium offers a comprehensive review of new diagnostic techniques and therapeutic treatments, the latest clinical trials, and state-of-the-art technology in contemporary cardiovascular medicine using concise didactic presentations, combined with a panel discussion and case presentations. Electronic handouts will be made available to conference attendees.

Following this course, the participant should be able to formulate a practical approach to common cardiovascular disorders; identify the appropriate tests that can be used to determine the severity of the patient problem and make an accurate diagnosis; discuss the various treatment options available; and recognize how to treat and when to refer cardiac patients. This activity is expected to result in increased confidence in making a diagnosis and providing effective treatment, referral, and follow-up care with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes.

TARGET AUDIENCEFamily physicians, internists, cardiologists, cardiovascular thoracic surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurses, allied health professionals, and other health care professionals who treat and care for patients with heart disease will benefit from attending this educational activity.

OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

• Describe common causes of systolic dysfunction

• Discuss effective diagnostic work-up for new systolic dysfunction

• Review anatomy and physiology of mitral and tricuspid valves

• Discuss treatment modalities available for tricuspid and mitral valve dysfunction

• Assess efficacy of tests used to evaluate common vascular disorders and determine the best test for specific cases

• Discuss the difference between functional and anatomic testing for vascular disorders

• Recognize when to refer or consult with a vascular specialist to provide optimal patient care

• Define the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ (STS) risk score calculation

• Review low-risk TAVR trials

• Discuss pros and cons of both surgical and transcatheter approach to aortic valve replacement

• Review basic evaluation and work-up for atrial fibrillation

• Describe treatment modalities for atrial fibrillation, including anticoagulants, medical therapies, ablation, and appendage occlusion

• Review interesting cases and cutting-edge treatments in cardiovascular medicine

• Review current state of advanced treatment for heart failure in the community

• Assess the impact of heart failure and heart transplant from a patient’s perspective

• Review indications for cardiac rehabilitation

• Describe the various phases of cardiac rehabilitation

• Recognize when it is appropriate to refer patients to a cardiac rehabilitation program
