Management Report 2015

KEVIN HURSHHursh Consulting & Communications, CDCS Executive Director

aDELE bUETTNERAgriBiz Communications, CDCS General Manager

In a letter from the Food Directorate of Health Canada dated December 3, 2015, novel food approval was granted for glabrous (hairless) canaryseed as a food cereal grain.

“The safety data provided supports that glabrous canaryseed is safe for general food use and does not contain gluten-like proteins, but suggests the possibility that wheat allergic individuals may react to proteins present in canary seed. While glabrous canaryseed is considered to be a low health risk to persons with celiac disease, the data presented cannot exclude the possibility that canaryseed may not be suitable for the diet of individuals with a wheat allergy.”

The letter goes on to say that the Food Directorate has no objection to the sale of glabrous canaryseed as a food cereal in Canada and the seed and any product containing it could be labelled as gluten-free. However, canaryseed will need to appear on the list of ingredients as well as a statement such as, “This product contains canaryseed which may not be suitable for people with wheat allergy.”

Another requirement is that CDCS establish a 1-800 number for consumers and request incident reports by sellers of products containing canaryseed, and report back any adverse events to Health Canada on an annual basis.

It isn’t known that canaryseed is a risk to those rare individuals with a wheat allergy, but the data to date cannot exclude that possibility. The CDCS has been invited to provide a rational to the Food Directorate for removing the allergy statement in the future, if and when sufficient evidence is collected to support the removal.

Despite the labelling stipulation, this is a milestone achievement for canaryseed producers. When the CDCS was established back in 2006, novel food approval was one of the primary objectives. GRAS, or Generally Recognized as Safe status has also been secured for the U.S. market.

Thank you to food scientist Carol Ann Patterson for working with the CDCS to pilot the crop to this historic approval.

The CDCS continues to support the glabrous canaryseed breeding work conducted by Pierre Hucl of the University’s Crop Development Centre. A new variety, CDC Calvi will be commercially available to growers in 2016. Calvi has improved yields as compared to CDC Togo and CDC Bastia. However, it still doesn’t match the yield provided by the old itchy variety known as Keet.

Future varieties promise to further close this yield gap and Pierre also has yellow-seeded lines with promising yields that should be more aesthetically pleasing for food uses.

Agronomic projects on canaryseed, including macro and micro nutrient needs and response to fungicide applications are being conducted by Bill May of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at Indian Head with support from CDCS.
