Reflections

National PTA has been honoring students’ artistic

achievements through the Reflections program since

1969. Students are challenged to create artwork in-

spired by a specific theme. Themes are selected from

hundreds of ideas submitted by students throughout

the country. The 2021-22 Reflections theme will be “ I

Will Change the World By”.

The PTA Reflections program is designed to enhance

quality arts education for students in preschool

through 12th grade, encouraging them to create

works of art in the areas of dance choreography, film

production, literature, music composition, photog-

raphy, and visual arts. The PTA Reflections program

was described by its founder, Mary Lou Anderson, as

“almost too simple.” That simplicity– of asking chil-

dren to express themselves artistically based on a

common theme– is the foundation of this long-

standing PTA program.

Thousands of students in Georgia participate through

their local PTA’s each year. Each state is allowed to

submit four entries in each of the arts areas and in

special artists to the national level of judging— one

entry for each grade division. All national entries are

judged on artistic merit/creativity, mastery of the me-

dium, and interpretation of the theme. This year a

total of 28 entries from Georgia advanced to the na-

tional level of judging. We didn’t have an entry in

dance or film for the special artist division.

Only seven Outstanding Interpretation Awards will be

awarded at the National level, one for each category.

These winners are notified directly and are also invit-

ed to attend the National PTA Convention.

Within each arts area, three Awards of Excellence

and five Awards of Merit are also selected. All visu-

al art and photography pieces that receive national

awards are used in exhibits and online galleries to

help promote the Reflections program for a period

of two to three years.

Did You Know ?

How do you correctly fill out your student entry form ? There’s a guide with prompts for making a great

artist statement.

How do the Judges score the entries? You can find the answer there.

Do you have a question about the rules for one of the categories? You can find the answer in the Rules and

Forms folder.

All the forms needed to help you have a successful Reflections program are found in the File Folder Tabs,

including a Local Unit Guide for the Reflections program.

You’ll find promotional tools, like posters and logos. Also tips for a great celebration, in the Celebration

Guide.

There’s even a fun sheet for parents and students to do together.
