Proposal covers all older age class aspen within Compartment 37. Aspen ranges from 40-55 years old. Stands have a generally heavy cover of hazel brush, scattered OX, Fir, White Pine, Paper Birch and Red Maple. Aspen is generally in poor shape and declining. Jack pine areas will be assessed along with aspen as a general goal within area is to increase jack pine and maintain aspen acreage. Areas dominated by OX will be assessed for whole tree removal to scarify with followup PJ aerial seeding. NCT and associated values need protection.

Proposal map shows comp 58 stand 1 in blue which is 166 acres in size and comes up on the harvest schedule. Pink shaded areas are aspen that is currently under ten years of age and yellow cross hatched areas show aspen that is over 50 years of age. This is an area that we try to focus on wildlife habitat while producing forest products, so a goal is to bre ak up large age classes of aspen to provide optimum grouse habitat, which also benefits other species. This proposal will pick areas primarily out of older than 50 year old age class in shapes and sizes to create optimum habitat. Sale areas will avoid touching youngest age classes, protect openings by leaving uncut buffers to prevent sprouting , and create access to openings to increase efficiency of maintaining openings. Proposal will provide a sale in the area of 100 acres.

This is a 1939 origin red pine plantation that has been thinned 2 times prior, with the most recent thinning occurring in 2004. Stand currently has a basal area around 180 square feet, trees average 13 inches DBH, with very good form. Option are for the stand to either be regenerated through a clearcut harvest with followup furrowing and tree planting, or stand will be thinned a third time and grown for an additional 20 years prior to final harvest. Data for this age stand tends to suggest that final harvest at earlier ages will maximize timber production in such a stand, as well as simplify regeneration of the future stand.

Sale proposal is for a portion of a 350+ acre stand of a 86 year old stand of red oak small sawlogs with a northern hardwood pole component. This stand comes up on the harvest schedule to conduct a shelterwood harvest in 2033, when the stand is 100 years old. This harvest would be the first entry of multiple future entries into the stand with the goal of regenerating the red oak present in this stand. Harvest would create conditions conducive to regen of the entire mix of species currently on the site, but would attempt to reduce aspen sprouting by leaving individual aspen as leave trees in the stand. Future harvests would be timed to occur to create a new shelterwood area along with overstory removal of this first harvest area. Bayfield Hiking trail can easily be avoided during this initial harvest.

Sale will be accessed from end of Green Acres road in town of Cloverland. Sale will involve multiple stands, be somewhat large in size, but will be broken up visually by multiple RMZs which will be excluded from sale to protect drainages and wet areas. Existing road network will be used from end of Green Acres, water crossing structures will be required to cross drainages that have crossed with culverts prior to state ownership. General locations of crossings are shown on map and appear to be able to be crossed using timber mat bridges to span the drainages. Not all stands shown up on recon harvest schedule, but will be entered now to facilitate harvest planning. Stands are a generally a mix of aspen and ash, with a lower percentage of spruce and fir. Sale Proposal is for 5 separate stands, aspen, scrub oak, red pine, and spruce which all need either a thinning or regeneration harvest treatment. Stands are located along Stone Chimney road north of Solon Springs. South of road, all stands are proposed to be clearcut, followed up with planting/and or seeding activity to regenerate to red pine and jack pine. North of road is an aspen stand that will regenerate from coppice and a small red pine plantation which will be thinned. Whole tree harvesting will be required to promote seedbed preparation and remove slash for site prep activities. Sale proposal consists of 2 separate stands of jack/scrub oak and gassy openings which were blade scarified using fire control dozers during fall of 2019 fire control operator statewide conference. Site was blade scarified with the goal of creating a seedbed for jack pine seed which will be flown onto the site as the snow is melting during the spring of 2019. Sale will be set up with a one year contract to remove all standing timber on site to encourage jack pine to grow. Scattered white pine on site will be left for seed source diversity. Areas of aspen clones in the bottom of the valley will be harvested and allowed to sprout for regeneration. Aspen areas were mostly avoided during site prep activities.

Swamp hardwoods will be evaluated for mgmt. options to push forest cover types away from black ash in favor of native conifers such as tamarack. Sale proposal is for an area that has no record of active mgmt. in the close past, with all stands being older than 1972 origin. A small area (3 acres) of hardwood (oak) was harvested in 2014 to attempt hemlock regeneration and monitor same. Proposal would include harvest and thinning of any and all covertypes to accomplish mgt goals as listed above. Harvest of ash, thinning and selective harvest of other species across cover types to encourage northern hardwood species is included.
