COURSE DESCRIPTION

The University of Ottawa, Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the Division of General Surgery are proud to present this 1-day course designed to provide general surgeons with relevant and up-to-date information about practical general surgery topics. This year's program includes benign colorectal disease, breast disease, hernia issues and acute care surgery topics. This conference will also allow participants to meet, dialogue and network with general surgery specialists through plenary sessions and interactive short presentations.

OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the program, participants should be able to: Assess current clinical management issues in surgical patients for general surgeons in practice, residents, medical students, nurses and other health care professionals in the field. Integrate new clinical management processes, techniques and guidelines in their practice. Facilitate collaboration and networking among health care professionals in the Ottawa area.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development. SPEAKERS Dr. Angel Arnaout MD, FRCPC, Breast Surgical Oncologist, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Angel Arnaout is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at the Ottawa Hospital, Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa and Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Dr. Arnaout is a Co-Director of the Canadian National Oncoplastic Partnership Course and also a Co-Director of the Canadian Oncoplastic Surgery Fellowship Training Program at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Jean-Michel Aubin MD, FRCPC, Surgeon, Queensway-Carleton Hospital

Dr. Aubin completed the medicine program at the University of Ottawa, followed by residency in General Surgery in Ottawa as well. He then completed a Fellowship in Hepatobiliary Surgery in Calgary. Dr. Aubin now practices General Surgery at Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

Dr. Alexandre Bouchard MD, FRCSC, Surgeon, CHU de Québec

Dr. Bouchard completed medical school at Laval University in 2002, followed by his general surgery residency in 2007. He then completed a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Ottawa in 2008 as well as a Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona in 2010. Dr. Bouchard is currently a minimally invasive and colorectal surgeon at CHU de Québec-Université Laval. His main fields of interest include transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), laparoscopic colorectal surgery, distal rectal cancer, transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), and the ERAS program.

Dr. Erin Cordeiro MD, Surgeon, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Cordeiro attended medical school and general surgery residency at Dalhousie University and then completed her fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the University of Toronto in 2014. During her clinical fellowship she also completed a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology through the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She then moved to Ottawa in 2014 to begin clinical practice. She is actively involved in research and is focusing on optimizing care in patients with high-risk benign breast disease.

Dr. Suleena Duhaime MD, FRCSC, Surgeon, Hôpital Monfort, Lecturer, University of Ottawa

Dr. Suleena Duhaime completed surgical residency at the University of Ottawa, then started at Montfort Hospital following graduation in 2013. Dr. Duhaime is currently a lecturer at the University of Ottawa as well as the Site Surgical Education Lead at Montfort.

Dr. Peter Glen MD, MSc, FRCSC, Acute Care and Emergency Surgery Fellow, University of Alberta

Dr. Glen is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Medical School and completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Ottawa. He is currently practicing in Alberta where he works as a Fellow in the department of surgery completing training in Acute Care and Emergency Surgery. Dr. Glen is a member of the Canadian Hernia Society and has a special interest in the management of complex abdominal wall hernias. His short term research goals include developing regional mechanisms for tracking outcomes of reconstructive surgeries and their economic impact on the community.

Dr. Nicole Kolozsvari MD, General Surgeon, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Kolozsvari received her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and then completed her general surgery residency, Master of Science, and Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery fellowship all at McGill. She is now a general surgeon at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital with an elective practice focused on bariatric and foregut cases, but continues to enjoy trauma and acute care surgery despite her call karma. Disclosure: Dr. Kolozsvari has a relationship with Ethicon/J&J as they fund the journal club.

Dr. Jacinthe Lampron MD, FRCSC, Medical Trauma Director, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Lampron is a trauma/general surgeon and Medical Trauma Director at the Ottawa Hospital. She completed her surgical training at Université Laval and her trauma ICU fellowship at the University of Ottawa. She has been deployed with the Canadian Armed Forces to Kandahar Airfield. She is a reserve Medical Officer. She is appointed as a Coroner in Ottawa. She holds a Master’s in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

SPEAKERS Dr. Maher Matar MD, MHA, FRCSC, General Surgeon, Trauma and Acute Care, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Matar completed his medical school training at the University of Ottawa and went on to McGill University to complete his training in general surgery. He completed his masters in health administration at the Telfer School of Management, a trauma fellow-ship at the University of Ottawa and a Trauma and acute care surgery fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston South Carolina. He has published peer reviewed articles with a focus on patient recidivism in trauma, impact of alcohol on surgical patients, along with chapters in various topics of Trauma Surgery. He currently practices at The Ottawa Hospital.

Dr. Reilly Musselman MD, FRCPC, Surgeon, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Musselman is a colon and rectal surgeon at The Ottawa Hospital and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa. He attended the University of Ottawa for his General Surgery residency training, and completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery from the University of Toronto in 2016. His clinical interests include both benign and malignant colorectal disease and his research interests focus on the treatment and outcomes of rectal cancer using administrative databases.

Dr. Amy Neville MDCM, MSc (Epi), FRCSC, Surgeon, Assistant Professor of Surgery, The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa

Amy Neville completed her residency training in general surgery as well as fellowships in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Neville currently practices general, minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at The Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus in Ottawa, ON. She is a surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa. Dr. Neville is Medical Director of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Bariatric Centre of Excellence and a board member of the provincial Ontario Bariatric Network. She is currently the general surgery Site Chief at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. Disclosure: Dr. Neville has received or will be receiving a teaching honorarium from Ethicon.

Dr. Amanda Roberts MD, MPH, FRCSC, Breast Surgical Oncologist, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Amanda Roberts is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital. She has completed a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Toronto followed by a Clinical Research fellowship examining population-based healthcare utilization after breast cancer surgery. Her fellowship was supported by a Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation salary grant and a health research grant from the Physicians Services Incorporated Foundation. Dr. Roberts completed her medical degree at McMaster Medical School and her general surgery residency at the University of Toronto. During her residency, she attended the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and obtained a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Health Leadership and Management.

Dr. Lara Williams MD, MSc, FRCSC, Colorectal Surgeon, Assistant Professor of Surgery, The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa

Dr. Lara Williams is a dual fellowship trained colorectal and minimally invasive surgeon at The Ottawa Hospital. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph. Dr. Williams obtained her medical degree at the University of Western Ontario and was awarded the Medical Alumni Gold Medal. Dr. Williams graduated from the General Surgery program at Dalhousie University in 2009. During her residency she completed her Masters of Medical Sciences, investigating the molecular pathogenesis of esophageal adenocarcinoma. She also successfully completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Clinician Investigator Program. Dr. Williams has gone on to complete Fellowships in Colorectal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Williams had an academic surgical practice at Dalhousie University from 2011 to 2015 and joined the Department of Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital in August 2015. She is a member of a four-surgeon group practice model alongside Drs. Husein Moloo, Isabelle Raiche, and Reilly Musselman (The Ottawa Colorectal Group). Dr. Williams is currently the Program Director of General Surgery at the University of Ottawa and the Quality and Patient Safety Lead for the Division of General Surgery. Dr. Williams’ clinical interests include the application of minimally invasive techniques to the surgical management of patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other benign colorectal diseases. Her research interests include clinical outcomes and health services – related research, with a focus on the development and implementation of models of surgical care to facilitate quality improvement initiatives in Colorectal Cancer. Dr. Terry Zwiep MD, MSc, FRCSC, Colorectal Surgery Fellow, The Ottawa Hospital

Dr. Zwiep is currently completing his Colorectal Surgery fellowship at the University of Ottawa. He grew up in the Niagara region and attended the University of Western Ontario for medical school and his General Surgery residency.
