The 2018 season was a very busy andenjoyable one for us.  A big thank youmust go out to our returning guests andnew guests from near and afar, many ofwhom have become good friends. Wemust also send a shout out to all of ourexcellent staff. 

Although purchasing the lodge inDecember 1989 made 2018 a 30 yearanniversary of sorts, we realized as thesummer wore on, that the upcoming2019 season is really the 30thOPERATING year … so it looks like we willhave to keep the celebrations going!

There have been numerous events tocelebrate over 30 seasons at thelodge. Not coincidentally, most of theminvolve the people who have visited orworked at Esnagami. There have beenmany birthdays and milestones

celebrated, including a guest who turned100 years old! There have been familyreunions and several marriage proposals(including one this summer … Congrats toMax and Martha!!), a 10 year Anniversaryfor Katy & Matt, and even a wedding heldon Squirrel Island a number of years ago.Esnagami has certainly been a specialplace for many.

FISHING TRENDSSome wonderful fishing memories werealso created in 2018, starting out withthe misadventures of Mike Wang andDale Grudzina, who are long time lodgeguests that love to fish Esnagami Lakeopening week. A delayed ice out thisspring saw Mike and Dale navigating theirway around ice flows and jams for thefirst couple of days in their trip. Theywere once even stranded for severalhours within sight of the lodge. At leastwe could see where they were, andenjoyed a chuckle or two as we watchedthem from the lodge main deck. Not to bedeterred, Mike and Dale continued theirquest for open water and were rewardedthe next day with a fantastic flurry of prespawn Pike fishing. Their persistance paidoff and Mike and Dale tallied 18 trophyPike between the two of them. Many ofthe Pike were in the mid 30's range withthe largest at 39".

As the weather and water warmed upover the next few weeks, many Esnagamianglers enjoyed some world class Pike,Walleye and Brook Trout fishing.  In early

June, Val Bernardi's group got rightdown to the business of catching BIGFISH.  Collectively they caught andreleased 19 trophy Pike and Walleye. Thisgroup had been previous winners of the“biggest fish of the year contest,” andthey were able to catch both the biggestWalleye (Val  Bernardi 30 ¼” Walleye)and Pike (Michael Giardulli 46 1/4”) ofthe 2018 Season as well. This cementedtheir place in the record books, and won2 free trips back to Esnagami!  Congratsto Val and Mike!

Early season Brook Trout fishing was asgood as ever.  Anglers caught andreleased numerous Trout in the 16 – 20”range (2 – 6lbs). Pat Devincenzotopped the leader board with a beautiful20,” 6 lb Brookie. 

The biggest project of thesummer was building anew cabin at our MerkleyLake Outpost Camp. Weflew down a work crew(supervised by EWL guideScott Hutchings) todismantle the old cabin andbuild a new one. The guysdid a great job! We aresure the guests who havebeen there in the past willappreciate the new renosthis spring.

The addition of newMercury 4 stroke motors,were not only moreenvironmentally friendly,but had better gasconsumption, and ranquieter on the water. Wewill purchase an additional11 new outboards for theupcoming 2019 season.

We mentioned family reunions earlier,and the Earick clan put together a veryimpressive one this summer. Max (Sr.)and Susu Earick have been joining us atEsnagami for all 30 years!!  This summer,Max and Susu, plus 12 other family andfriends, took over half of the lodge. Along with celebrating the familygathering, the group also showed us howwell they know how to fish EsnagamiLake. The Earick clan put up some largenumbers of Walleye and Pike into the“Trophy Catch and Release program” …29 in all with numerous Walleye 27  29”in size, Pike up to 37 38” as well as 2Brook Trout at 18 & 19 ½.”  Best of all while having a fun filled week!

There were numerous other groups whotallied up both Trophy fish as well assheer numbers of catches.  A fewmentionables are: Roger Dyke  7Walleye 24 – 28,” Ryan & John Preston6 Brook Trout 18 – 19 ½” (4 – 6 lbs),Jane Hagedorn & Vicki Nelson – 11Walleye and Pike up to 28” & 38,” TheWillis family – 13 Walleye with severalin the 27 – 28 ½” range, Kurt Jackson'sgroup of Pike fishers – 27 entries with3 in the 40” + range.  Father and Sonteam Mark and Noah Stewart – 40” &41” Pike.  Ron Davison, Ken Davisonand Eric Winterstein ended the seasonwith 12 entries in the Pike category. Ken's 43 ½” put him in second place forlargest Pike caught and released in2018. 

Best of all, every one of these trophyfish were released!!
