Transportation

Harvard Square is considered a highly walkable area, and we strongly recommend planning to walk to classes

and activities around Harvard Square when possible.

HARVARD SHUTTTLE

Each day, Shuttle Services transports thousands of students, faculty and staff across the University.

Major stops include: HiLab, Business School, Kennedy School of Government, Law School, Maxwell

Dworkin, Memorial Hall, The Quad, River Houses, Widener Gate, and Lamont Library. The M2 Shuttle

also offers transport to the Harvard Chan School of Public Health campus, located in the Longwood

Medical Area of Boston.

Shuttles are open to all members of the Harvard Community, including faculty, staff and students. From

its low-floor and lift-equipped buses to door-to-door paratransit van service, Harvard's entire system is

accessible for riders of all abilities.

Bus stops are marked with special crimson, red and white signs. If you wish to exit at a non-designated

stop, please inform the driver when boarding. Drivers will make requested stops whenever it is safe to do

so.

For real-time Shuttle information, view the Shuttle Tracker at https://harvard.transloc.com/ .The shuttle

tracker can also be accessed through the Harvard University mobile app.

BICYCLE

Many people in Cambridge choose to use a bicycle to get around. The Cambridge Community

Development Department offers safety tips and bike parking guidance at:

http://www.cambridgema.gov/home/CDD/Transportation/gettingaroundcambridge/bybike.aspx.

Hubway is a public bike share system in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville offering options

of 24-hour, 72-hour, monthly, or annual passes. It allows you to pick up a bike at any station and return

your bike to any station. Additional information is available at: https://www.thehubway.com/.

PUBLIC TRANSIT

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), more commonly known as the T, is one of the oldest

public transit systems in the United States. It’s also the largest transit system in Massachusetts. The Red, Orange,

Blue, and Green subway lines provide fast, easy connections to and from Boston and surrounding cities,

including Cambridge, Newton, Revere, Quincy, and Dorchester.

You can obtain a blank reloadable fare pass, called a CharlieCard, from an MBTA Customer Service Agent at

several T stations including the Harvard Square station. MBTA Customer Service Agents are available every day

from 7am-7pm. Fare may be reloaded and single use tickets purchased at any time from a ticket machine in the

station.

CharlieCards also are available at a number of retail locations:

http://www.mbta.com/fares_and_passes/sales_locations/.

Additionally, you can ask an ALI staff member for a card (we have a small number of extra cards).

The MBTA Trip Planner is an available resource to help you identify the best route:

https://www.mbta.com/trip-planner.

There are also dozens of mobile phone apps to assist you with predicting train and bus times using real-

time data – one such app is the MBTA endorsed Transit App (https://transitapp.com/) which can be

downloaded for free on your mobile device.

using your mobile device.

download their app onto your mobile device and link a credit card prior to ordering a ride.

Local taxis that can be requested by calling include:

Metro Cab 617-782-5500

Cambridge Taxi 617-718-4000

Boston Cab 617-536-5010

Black Car Service that may be reserved in advance include:

Street parking in Cambridge can be difficult to find, but Fellows and Partners are eligible to apply

for on-campus parking. Please note that parking permits for lots in Cambridge often have long

wait periods, and the Harvard Business School campus in Allston is more likely to have

availability.

To learn more about Harvard University parking permit types and rates, please visit:

http://www.transportation.harvard.edu/parking/permits-rates. This page also includes a link to the

permit application, which must be submitted in-person at the Harvard Parking Office, located on

Daily guest parking permits may be purchased online at:

http://www.transportation.harvard.edu/parking/visitors/online-daily-permits.

AREAS TO VISIT WHILE IN BOSTON

Boston Common / Public Garden / Freedom Trail: The Boston Common is the starting place of the

famous Freedom Trail around Boston. The trail – represented by red bricks on the sidewalk – is about

2.5 miles long and brings you around 16 famous historical places that played an important role in

America’s Liberty and history. Some of the sites you will see are Paul Revere’s house, the place of the

Boston Massacre, and the Bunker Hill Monument.

Faneuil Hall / Historic Downtown / Haymarket: To arrive at the famous 100+ year old market, you

need to take the orange or green line trains and get off at the Haymarket stop. The Haymarket hosts over

60 different vendors that come every Friday and Saturdays from dawn to dusk. You can find fresh fish,

fruit, and vegetables for great prices. This is one of Boston’s favorite and historical traditions.

Page 15: 2018 Concierge Guide - Advanced Leadership · 2018 concierge guide for advanced leadership initiative fellows and partners

Page | 15

Theatre District: The theatre district is where you will find Comedy Clubs, restaurants, and all the

Broadway shows in Boston. For upcoming performances, look at https://www.boston-discovery-

guide.com/boston-theatre-district-shows.html

South End: The South End is where you will find local boutiques, numerous chef/owner restaurants, and

great art stores.

Boston Harbor: The Boston Harbor is where you can find great seafood restaurants overlooking the

water. You can catch a harbor cruise for a reasonable price and even go whale watching. You can also

grab a ferry that will take you to the Harbor Islands.

North End: The North End is Boston’s historical Little Italy. Walk the streets of the safe and charming

North End. Stop in delicious authentic Italian restaurants, pastry shops, and Italian grocery stores.

Seaport District: One of Boston’s newest residential neighborhoods, the Seaport District is part of the

South Boston neighborhood and is known for industrial buildings that have been turned into chic

apartments and restaurants.
