Resume Review and Elevator Speech Open Session - UW AWWA-WEF Student Chapter - King County PNWS YP’s hosted a Resume Review night with the UW AWWA-WEF Student Chapter on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018. The event provided students the opportunity to meet with young professionals and practice their elevator speech. Pizza was provided by King County subsection. Networking Social with AWWA and PNCWA Professionals and UW-AWWA-WEF Student Group - On January 18th, King County Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association (PNCWA) and KC PNWS YPs hosted a networking social with the UW AWWA-WEF student chapter at Big Time Brewery. Over 15 students joined for drinks, food and networking following the UW CEE Career fair. Thanks to the PNWS YP committee for providing the food and to PNCWA YPs for the drinks. Puget Sound Engineering Council (PSEC) Fair - King County Sub Section YP’s collaborated with the Engineering Committee to host a booth at the Puget Sound Engineering Council (PSEC) fair on Saturday, February 10th, 2018. They had 8 YP volunteers throughout the day help demonstrate water filtration and a flow meter set-up to K-12 students and share in the fun of engineering and science. We also were joined by the AWWA mascot, Eddy, who couldn’t help but

put a smile on the face of attendees. We had a great time spreading awareness about the importance of water and information on how to get involved with AWWA and the water industry. Thanks to Josh Kennedy (Jacobs) for organizing the event and for the King County Sub Section and Engineering Committee for sponsoring the booth. King County Water Olympics - The King County Water Olympics was held on March 9th at ACME Bowl in Tukwila, WA. A total of seven cities and special purpose districts located within King County participated in the 7th Annual KCSS Best Tasting Water Competition. Kyle Kihs, PNWS-AWWA’s Executive Director, Steve Hulsman with Department of Health - NW Drinking Water Operations, and Dave Griner, Brewer and Market Manager for Mac & Jack’s Brewery represented various parts of the water industry, judging samples of water from each contestant’s distribution system. Highest honors went to the Union Hill Water Association (UHWA) for the second year in a row where their water beat the out seven other local King County water purveyor contestants. Covington Water District walked away with the honor for Treated Water Systems. In its third year, Meter Madness continued to add excitement during the water judging event. It was the dexterity skill set from years of knitting that prevailed when Brinlee Finzel with Brown and Caldwell beating out all the other fifteen contenders with a time of 37.58 seconds with Jolyn Leslie in a close second with 37.88 seconds. Thank you Brinlee for representing King County at the Tacoma Regional Conference!

The Hydrant Hysteria competition closed out the evening at the ACME Bowl. Four teams competed, two from the Northshore Utility District and one from the Covington Water District competed for the King County Subsection and Tacoma Water competed for the South Sound Subsection. Covington Water District (1:45:33) and Tacoma Water (2:16:53) had times which propelled them to the Regional Conference competition in Tacoma. The Covington Water District team made up of Cameron Hermsen, Jeff Greer, & Steve Butcher went on to represent the PNWS-AWWA at ACE Las Vegas. KC Subsection Member Appreciation Mixer-The King County Subsection would like to thank the Pacific Northwest Section Membership Committee for hosting an AWWA Member mixer at Two Beers Brewing on May 9th. Free beer, free food and no agenda and an opportunity celebrate and hang out with Cheryl Capron before her retirement was a treat! Asset Management for Utilities Workshop – A one-day Asset Management class was held on July 18th, 2018. The workshop provided an in-depth look at asset management philosophies used by many water/wastewater agencies across the country. Attendees were able to get a jump on managing your facility’s assets by learning the latest trends and techniques and listening to real-world case studies. The workshop prepared participants to describe RCM and comprehensive asset management; develop procedures for your facility including: asset register, asset management planning, and risk based O&M; and know what steps to take when a failure occurs. Cedar River Water Treatment Facility YP Tour - On August 9th, 2018, the King County and South Sound Subsection YPs joined together for a tour of the Cedar River Water Treatment Facility, located in Renton, WA. Seattle Public Utilities hosted our group of 20+ for a great tour of the facilities to understand how a majority of Seattle’s water is treated. King County Subsection’s 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament – The King County 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament was changed it up a bit this year. The tournament was held at Druid’s Glen, in Covington, WA, on Friday, Sept. 28th, 2018 with a later start than normal due to it being later in the season. This allowed for a “warmer” start for the players. The sun came out as well and made for a beautiful day on the course. Throughout the day, we heard how beautiful the course was, how great the staff was and most players stayed to enjoy the late lunch and banquet afterwards! Every hole was sponsored (eighteen) and every registered play spot (25 teams) was accounted for on the day of the tournament! What does this mean? We had 100% participation this year! What a great achievement! Net proceeds of $7,810.29 from the tournament were split and donated to Water for People ($3,905.15) and the PNWS-AWWA E&T Fund ($3,905.14).

King County Supports 4th Annual PNW YP Summit - The fourth annual Pacific Northwest Young Professionals’ (PNW YP) Summit hosted by PNCWA and PNWS-AWWA Students and Young Professionals was held on Friday, Sept. 21st, 2018 at the Water Resources Education Center in Vancouver, WA with “Innovation!” as the theme. The summit was a full-day event bringing together industry speakers and interactive sessions focusing on skills for YP’s to elevate their careers and

build our AWWA-PNCWA networks. Speakers covered topics pertinent to upcoming water and wastewater industry leaders, featuring speakers such as Erin Mosley (Career Road Mapping) and Mark Jockers (Road to One Water). King County was happy to invest in the event as a Silver Sponsor as our way of supporting the development of new leaders within our industry. Control Valve Service Training Class with GC Systems, Inc. - On Thursday, October 4, 2018, King County Subsection hosted a Control Valve Service Training offered by GC Systems at the City of Seattle Joint Training Facility. The class provided a complete review of the valves offered by Cla-Val Inc, with explanations of the hydraulics, operation, maintenance and repair of the different valves, including their controls and accessories. This was one of our better attended training events with approximately 46 people signed up to attend the class. Proceeds from the training will be used for future training events for the King County membership.

King County YP Fall Social - The King County Young Professionals (YP’s) partnered with Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association (PNCWA) to host the annual YP Winter Social at Flatstick Pub on Friday, December 7th, 2018 from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. King County YP’s gathered for a night of 9-hole Mini-Golf! The event provided an opportunity to network and made it easy for folks to show off their mini-golf skills! All proceeds from the Mini-Golf tickets went to Water for People to support their mission, to provide all people access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Special thanks to the King County Subsection of PNWS-AWWA and PNCWA for sponsoring the drinks and food and to Flatstick Pub for generously donating the space!

UW AWWA-WEF Panel Discussion and Networking, January 17th, 2019 – King County YP’s partnered with PNCWA to host a panel discussion and networking night with the UW AWWA-WEF student chapter at the University of Washington. The event provided an opportunity to develop communication between professionals and students in the water and environmental sectors. In addition, this was a special opportunity to meet members of the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association (PNCWA) board along with representatives from the King County AWWA subsection. The panel discussion focused on lessons learned about the transition from school to career and the benefits of involvement with professional organizations (i.e. making connections for one’s future job). Food was sponsored by the PNWCA and AWWA 2020 Vision Committee.

UW AWWA-WEF Career Fair Prep and Resume Night, January 15th 2019 - KC YPs held a resume review night on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 with the University of Washington AWWA-WEF student chapter to help students prepare for the UW Civil and Environmental Engineering Career Fair. Subsection Goals The subsection annually defines the goals for the following year and has identified the following:

• Produce four training classes: We traditionally have used the Seattle Public Utilities Training Facility (JTF) and the City of Bellevue Training Center, both of which are provided at no cost to the Subsection;

• Host at least three non-training events: Past events have included Golf tournament, King County Water Olympics (Best Tasting Water Contest, Meter Madness and Hydrant Hysteria), Young Professional’s Trivia Night, Summer Sipping;

• Generate funds to donate to worthy causes. In the past, has included Water for People, Engineers without Borders, Hopelink and the PNWS-AWWA E&T Fund;

• Increase membership and event attendance. Membership is promoted at training and non-training events though the dissemination of the AWWA Membership pamphlet as well allowing non-members to participate in the Best Tasting Water competition through which the prize is converted into a one year membership;

• Submit useful information to Water Matters about our Subsection activities and events on a quarterly basis;

• Balanced Officer Rotation: Through proactive marketing and recruitment of new potential officers, we seek to maintain a balanced representation of the subsection geographically as well as from the industry public employees, consultants and suppliers. We currently have 6 representatives from public/private utilities, 3 consultants and 1 supplier as officers from throughout King County.
