Welcome to Spring and the final three months of the school year. Spring repre-
sents some of the busiest times for the school, given the learning that contin-
ues in the building, and the many facets of planning already underway for the
2017-2018 year.
This past month, our Cranny Cares campaign continued with “Capes for Kids.” This is an annual fundraiser which takes place in the month of March to raise funds for the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. More than 7,400 kids go through their doors every year with autism, cerebral palsy, brain inju-ries, amputation, epilepsy, concussion and other disabilities.
These children want to breathe on their own, get active, talk with family, be-
come more independent, or just feel better. With passionate frontline staff
providing treatments, therapies and specialized programs and services, Holland
Bloorview is creating a world of possibilities for kids with disabilities.
Our staff and students have been super heroes all month long making an-
nouncements, dressing up as superheroes and raising money for a great cause.
On Friday, March 31st, MCES held a superhero spirit day and assembly to con-
clude our month long mission. We were able to raise $500 for Holland Bloor-
view! One month at a time, Michael Cranny is making a difference and showing
the world Cranny Cares.

Grade 5’s Learn About First Nations
In order to kick-off the First Nation Peoples and European Explorers Social Studies Unit, the Grade 5 students in Mr. Nemirov and Miss. Sikakane’s class had an Anishinaabe teacher from the school board facilitate the “Blanket Ac-tivity.” The class’ participation in this activity enabled them to understand the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Europeans in Canada through the re-enactment of colonization.

tank tops (strap width should be two finger spaces wide), no spaghetti straps, no tops that leave the midriff exposed, or undergarments visible; no halter tops
flip flops (full sandals only)
refrain from wearing hats, bandanas and any other headwear in school, except for religious purposes
clothing with inappropriate slogans or logos.
Ms. Lennox’s Class has been Exploring
In Science we made Oobleck! We mixed together cornstarch, water and sparkles in a big bowl with a spoon. After making it we played with it. It felt like slime and it was gooey. It was a solid and a liquid at the same time because when it was in the bowl it was solid but when you held it in your hand it turned into a liquid. Mati and Lilia
When we had Scientist in the School we learned about solids, liquids and gases. We learned how to blow bubbles us-ing a cup. We connected our cups together to make a BIG bubble. We also turned freezies from a liquid to a solid by putting ice in a cup, adding salt and then putting the freezie in the cup. Doing Scientist in the School is really fun!
Alexandra and Romy Dear Caretakers, Thank you for inviting us to go on an energy walk. Thank you for showing us the machines and the mechanical room. We were surprised when we saw the ladder that goes up to the roof. We learned a lot about energy input and output and had fun! Maksym and Jacob

Parent Information
Students in Grades 5 to 12 at the York Region Dis-trict School Board have been participating in a sur-vey running from March 20 and April 28, 2017. The survey is voluntary, anonymous and confidential, taking place at school. The YRDSB survey fulfills the Ontario Ministry of Education’s requirement for schools to conduct student surveys and is aligned with the YRDSB’s Board Improvement Plan for Stu-dent Achievement and Well-Being.
Survey questions will address topics related to Math, Modern Learning, Mental Health and Well-Being, Equity and School Safety. This survey pro-vides an opportunity to hear directly from students and the results will be used to identify student needs and plan strategies to support student achievement and well-being. If you have questions, please contact the school office.
In the weeks to come, details will be shared about a Parent's Survey, enabling you to contribute your voice to this important data collection undertaking, as well.
Computer Club
Computer Club is a great learning space run by Mr.Milette and Ms. Amedeo after school on Thursdays where students have the opportunity to experience different activities based on computer science and coding. Some of these activities include Lego Mindstorm Robotic Kits where students get to create different robots and such and then program them using an iPad to see them move around. Some programs used that mostly involve with coding include Code.org, Kodable, Python and most commonly used: Scratch. These programs are great for creating school projects, anima-tions, games and so much more! Mr.Milette and Ms. Amedeo are open to any suggestions for the club and very enthusiastic about the club.
The annual Cranny Badminton team has once again started! Coached by Mr. Milette and Ms. McLeod. The
first tryout was definitely hectic, but that is a guarantee when you have an amazing NINETY students come
for the tryout! It was amazing to see all the students who were motivated to play. Lots of students were
also helping the coaches track student progress and potential. We are looking forward to another great
year this year with the Badminton team. Stay tuned for future results!

Grade 7’s Explore Water Filtration Systems
The water Filtration separation device assignment was a fun and interactive hands on activity. With it came
new learnings, new challenges and most of all new experiences.
Our fellow teachers were kind enough to help us face and overcome the challenges along the way like making
sure we used proper materials and also giving us time to think things through. This has taught
us how a water filter works, how particles interact and collide with each other and the uses of
many new materials when it comes to separating different pieces of matter. To see how the wa-
ter looked before and after using our filters see the pictures below. We thank our fellow teach-
ers, Ms.Fairbarn, Mr.Millette and Ms.DiMarco or this
wonderful opportunity.

talked to the students about street safety and about teeth and the ways that you can keep them healthy.
Here are some of the comments made by the students during their visit.
“Make your teeth healthy and clean.” “Police help kids find their mummy and daddy’s when lost.” “I take care of my teeth by brushing them in the morning and night.” “Call 911 if you need help.” “We get cavities when we eat candy.”
