Our MissionFollowing the values and traditions of our founders, the mission of DePaul School for Hearing and Speech is to teach each child who is deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Our children enter the educational mainstream with the foundation to succeed.

IdentityFounded in 1908 by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, DePaul School for Hearing and Speech has been providing quality Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing for more than 100 years. DePaul School is licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Approved Private School (APS).

It is the policy of DePaul School to provide equal educational opportunities to all students who qualify for admission without regard to race, color, religion, sex, ancestry, or national origin.

Dear Friends –Listen to the Winds of Change!

In 1964, when DePaul School was located on Castlegate Avenue in Mount Lebanon, Bob Dylan released a radical new song; “The Times They Are A-Changin’”. DePaul School was in its 56th year at the time, and once again the organization was facing some significant changes in programming. The evolving needs of families and increasing demands translated into challenges both financial and practical. The school, founded and developed through the committed laboring of the Sisters of Charity, blazed a trail of ingenuity and community into what can be a very isolating human condition. Founded on the principle that hearing loss, or other sensory impairment need not isolate family members, the Sisters pursued the very best teaching strategies available.

Their pursuit of the most effective teaching methods to use spoken language took them to Europe for some of the most progressive training at the time. Their willingness to take calculated risks on behalf of the educational needs of students and the tenacity to give every student a meaningful education for the whole-person remains the hallmark at DePaul School today.

As the winds of change blow across our culture, it is challenging to listen for the purpose of the change, and respond appropriately. In 2018, DePaul School celebrates our 110th year of providing meaningful service to families of children with hearing loss. Newborn hearing screenings, now standard for every new baby born in Pennsylvania, allow children with hearing loss and their families to receive services as quickly as possible. This is so important because delays in hearing result in delays in listening, spoken language, and eventually in reading. Advances in technology and access to early intervention services now provide children with hearing loss occasion to develop listening and spoken language skills with the support of their family and professional team.

This past year, a team of expert clinicians decided to launch an entirely new program into early intervention. With knowledge of what young children need, skills in how to develop language and conviction that parents want to be able to meet with other families of children with hearing loss, the Early Intervention Team began. They met, they planned, they reached out to families and they managed to grow a program from three families (the first session in August 2017) to ten families (May 2018). Families gather once a month to share the joys of developing language and understanding through a Music Social for Babies! This makes another bend in the road for DePaul; last August, we began offering center-based program for parents of babies to enter into their hearing and learning journey from infancy. Because current trends in education are habilitating children with hearing loss at younger ages, this next challenge brings many new opportunities!

Our Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten and Upper-level programs all experienced refinement and some exciting changes as well. For example, students in the Upper Level program engaged in scientific discoveries, learned to play guitars and used a reading series platform on their kindles. Change brings many challenges of uncertainty, but one thing is certain, as always, “the times, they are a-changin’”. We are planning to listen to the winds of change, and respond appropriately to it. Thank you for your continued support in the process. We draw tremendous strength knowing that we aren’t facing the future alone.
