Frog Fun!

It seems there were two frogs sitting on a lily pad, when all of a sudden, a fly came along. One frog put out his tongue, ate the fly, and started laughing hysterically. Soon the other frog joined in the laughter.

Later in the day, the other frog ate a fly and the two frogs burst out in laughter. As time went on, the frogs enjoyed the flies so much that the sight of a fly would cause them to double up with pleasure (if it's possible for frogs to double up!). But of course, the most pleasure came when the fly was actually eaten.

A third frog hopped up to the first two and asked what was so funny. The first frog answered "Time." "Huh?" asked the third frog. The second frog explained:

"Time's fun when you’re having flies."

A message from the Chief Commissioner of Scotland.

On behalf of Scottish Scouting can I offer you a warm welcome to Scotland, to Blair Atholl and to the 35th Scottish International Patrol Jamborette. It is heartening to think that the Jamborette has been a key feature in the Scottish Scouting calendar for 70 years and is still going strong. This year, over a 1000 Explorer Scouts from Scotland and overseas, with a strong adult leader team, will spend 10 days living a working together. Wherever you do your Scouting, you are most welcome here in the beautiful hills of Highland Perthshire. Make the most of your time together. Share stories and learn about each other’s lives and cultures. Make new friends and take them with you in your hearts when you go your separate ways. Blair Atholl will work its magic on each one of you. Enjoy the camp. Graham Haddock

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered...

"Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to

make money. Then he sacrifices money to

recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious

about the future that he does not enjoy the present;

the result being that he does not live in the present

or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die,

and then dies having never really lived."

"INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE" - The Dalai Lama

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risks.

When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

Follow the three R's.... RESPECT for self, RESPECT for others, and RESPONSIBILITY for all your actions.

Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

Learn the rules, so that you know how to break them properly.

Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

When you realise that you have made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Spend some time alone every day.

Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation of your life.

In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

Share your knowledge. It is the way to achieve immortality.

Be gentle with the earth.

Once a year go somewhere you've never been before.

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds the need for each other.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

You're braver than you believe, stronger than

you seem, and smarter than you think.

The Nails in the Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

He said, 'You've done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there and a verbal wound is just as bad as a physical one.'

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticise me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you.”

The Elephant Rope

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

The King’s Highway

Once upon a time, a king had a great long highway built for the people who lived in his kingdom. After it was completed, but before it was opened to the public, the king decided to have a contest. He invited as many of his subjects as desired to participate. The challenge was to see who could travel the highway in the very best way, and the winner was to receive a chest of gold.

On the day of the contest, all the people came. Some of them had fine chariots, some had fine clothing and fancy food to make the trip a luxurious journey. Some wore their sturdiest shoes and ran along the highway on their feet to show their skill. All day they travelled along the highway, and each one, when he arrived at the end, complained to the king about a large pile of rocks and debris that had been left almost blocking the road at one point. They all complained that these rocks and rubbish had got in their way and hindered their travel, so how could they travel the highway in their very best way?

But at the end of the day, a lone traveller crossed the finish line tired, dirty and thirsty. He warily walked over to the king and addressed him with great respect and handed him a small chest of gold that he had found. He said, "I stopped along the way to clear a pile of rocks and debris that was blocking the road at one point. This chest of gold was under it all. Please have it returned to its rightful owner."

The king replied, "You are the rightful owner."

"Oh no," said the traveller, "This is not mine. I've never owned such treasure. It can not be mine."

"Oh yes," said the king, "You've earned this chest of gold, for you have just won my contest.... For he who travels the road best is the one who makes the road better for those who will follow."

Never blame anyone in your life. Good people give you happiness. Bad people give you experience. The worst people give you a lesson. And the best people give you memories.

Stone Soup

Once upon a time there was a famine in the land. People hoarded their food and hid it from

neighbours and friends. One day a stranger arrived at the village, very hungry and dishevelled. He

went from door to door looking for someone to receive him, to take him in and for something to

eat. One after the other the villagers told him that they too were starving and so they could not help him.

It was not until he had reached the last house in the village that the poor woman who lived there

told him that all she had left over was a little water but he was welcome to share the water with

her. The stranger said that was more than enough. Then he told her that he had a magic stone with

which he could make enough soup to feed the whole village. The starving woman was very excited

and went around the village to alert all her neighbours. The stranger filled a large pot with the

water and threw his round, shiny, magic stone into it.

The stone soup cooked and all the hungry villagers waited expectantly. Then the stranger tasted the stone soup and said loudly, "Ah, I love this stone soup but stone soup with a little cabbage in it

would be very hard to beat." Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a cabbage she had

retrieved from its hiding place, and gave it to the stranger for the soup. "Wonderful", cried the

stranger, "but I once had some stone soup with onions in it as well and it was fit for a king!"

Very soon a second villager appeared with some onions and some garlic and other herbs and the

stranger put them all into the stone soup. And so it went on..."If only we had a few potatoes,"

and..."How wonderful it would be if only we had a few carrots." And after a little while there was a

delicious soup meal for all the starving villagers, and for the stranger too!!

The villagers offered the stranger a great deal of money for the magic stone but he

refused to sell it and he travelled on to another village the next day. Soon the famine

ended but the people of the village never forgot about the finest soup they had ever

tasted.

When each of us contribute only a little we can feed the whole world village!

A very special bank account

Imagine there is a bank which credits your account each morning with £86,400, carries over no balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every pound, of course!

Well, everyone has such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the records of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow". Therefore, there is never not enough time or too much time. Time management is decided by us alone and nobody else. It is never the case of us not having enough time to do things, but the case of whether we want to do it.

You’re packing up your sleeping bag,

Your lantern and your tent.

And you’re off to find the life you lost,

But you’re not sure where it went.

And I hope these mountains teach you,

How to stand both tall and proud,

That you see your life much clearer,

With your head above the cloud.

I hope you swim through rivers,

With their currents swift and fast,

That they show you must be careful,

When you wash away your past.

I hope that you are humbled,

By the vastness of the sea,

That the eagles high above you,

Make you feel like you are free.

I hope that when night has fallen,

And your fire’s just a spark,

That the stars are there to remind you,

That there’s beauty in the dark.

But most of all I’m hoping,

That you’re learning while you roam

That no matter the distance,

You can always come back home.

A message from the Chief Commissioner of Scotland.

As this year’s 35th Blair Atholl International Patrol Jamborette comes to an end, I hope you have had a ball! Take a little time to think about the fun times that you have had together and on the many new friends that you have made. Have you thought about how you plan to keep in touch your new friends? In this world of Facebook, Twitter and other social media apps this should be easier than ever. Make plans to keep these new friendships alive in the years ahead. The words ‘Blair Atholl’ are now stamped on your Scouting life. You will never be able to rub them out. Cherish the memories, make the time you have left together even more special and have a safe trip home. Graham Haddock
