The Executive Director2016 was a year full of accomplishments for the foundation!

We were fortunate to add new board members with diverse backgrounds and individual passions each brings to the table, including our new Board Chairman, John Rogers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The website was updated and converted to WordPress, a more user-friendly platform. Our day on Capitol Hill was invigorating, with nearly 100 participants. It resulted in the passage of Senate Resolution 438, designating September as National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. The foundation continued to increase its level of research funding with a record amount of $310,000.

Our awareness and educational initiatives continued by promoting our PSA’s and documentaries, as well as creating our first ever youth fact sheet. Social media outreach grew tremendously through the various outlets making it possible to connect with a multitude of new people to help spread the awareness of brain aneurysms in an effort to promote early detection and save lives.

So, thank you for your continued support of the mission of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. YOU are the reason we continue to strive for a world without death or disability from brain aneurysms.

The Medical Advisory Board Executive DirectorOn behalf of the Medical Advisory Board, I congratulate all who have contributed to the success of the foundation in 2016. Your generosity given in so many ways allowed the foundation to award $310,000 to 11 different research projects this year! This is a tremendous accomplishment and brings the total funds awarded by the BAF over the past ten years to approximately $1.7 million. These funds are critical to improve identification and treatments of unruptured aneurysms and outcomes for all those affected by brain aneurysms, as well as aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and its associated complications, such as vasospasm and stroke.

I look forward to 2017 being an even better year and that through our research, lives will be saved.

Since 1994, when the Brain Aneurysm Foundation was established as a public charity, our funding has been targeted

to provide critical awareness, education, support, advocacy, and research funding to reduce the incidence of brain

aneurysms, promote early detection, and improve patient outcomes.

The foundation has no endowment; every dollar we raise is deployed to advance our mission to create wider

awareness of brain aneurysms; to provide support for those affected by brain aneurysms; and to educate patients,

their families, and the medical community about brain aneurysms. From year to year the foundation strives to maintain

its low overhead through vigilant governance of expenses and constant review of nonprofit best practices and

methodologies.

The first announcement of our

#1in50 CAMPAIGN reached almost 25,000 people – resulting in hundreds of people

sending their 1 in 50 photos and over 3,000 visitors to our website.

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

What began as a few simple brain aneurysm facts on billboards soon became a grassroots

awareness campaign that took hold and resonated across the country.

Ten days later Patty woke up to discover she had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and stroke – her survival was a miracle. And that’s just how Patty has operated since. “I feel like I’m a walking miracle…I survived for a reason and a purpose. I hope to inspire and motivate those who don’t think they can…yes, you can

and you will!” Patty’s mantras include “survive and thrive” and “progress not perfection.” She credits her support group for helping her understand what to expect during her recovery journey.

This past September, Patty turned up the volume and focused her energy on raising local awareness. Patty’s fundraising events are grassroots community-based efforts like our #1in50 campaign. To raise awareness, Patty reached out to her community and organized everything from fundraisers at dance studios and fitness centers, to the wearing of brain aneurysm awareness ribbons by the town’s cheerleaders, lacrosse team, and even tied around the trees! When the #1in50 campaign launched, Patty was one of the first to send in her photo and honor the community that supported her through her recovery.

Celebrity chef Mario Batali became an active supporter of the

foundation’s #1in50 campaign.


SUPPORT

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation eases the

diagnosis, procedural and recovery process for

survivors and families by providing phone support,

email support, support groups, our main website,

and our online support group website.

Support groups offer brain aneurysm survivors and their families the opportunity to share life experiences, work through challenges, and find new ways to adapt to changes in their life. The goal of support group meetings is to help alleviate fears and concerns through education and group discussions facilitated by a medical professional. Survivors realize that they are not alone. Survivors and caregivers share their experiences and show support to those in need. There are now 65 support groups located in the following states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, and Canada.

5TH Year on Capitol Hill is a Great SuccessOn May 11, 2016 we had the best turnout with nearly 100 participants from 16 different states. The group was made up of patients, caregivers, medical professionals, corporate stakeholders, as well as families and friends honoring those lost and survived. Many thanks to all who participated and especially Arnold and Porter, LLP for setting up over 100 meetings so we could make the case for more brain aneurysm awareness and research funding.

Historic Brain Aneurysm Legislation Makes Inroads on Capitol Hill “Ellie’s Law” (H.R. 6185), named after Ellie Helton, was formally introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representatives Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Yvette Clarke (D-NY). If passed, this legislation would authorize $25 million in federal funding for brain aneurysm research. Ellie’s Law provides the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) with $25 million ($5 million per year for 5 years) to conduct or support further comprehensive research on unruptured intracranial aneurysms, studying a broader patient population diversified by age, sex, and race.

How did you get involved with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation?

I learned about the foundation after my wife Shirley passed from a brain aneurysm. I had never even heard of a brain aneurysm and began to do some research. That’s when I found the Brain Aneurysm Foundation website. As I read through their information, I realized Shirley had been exhibiting the “headache” listed as an aneurysm symptom. Her headache had been diagnosed as hormone-related, a typical diagnosis for a woman her age; she was given medication and didn’t think much of it.

It was also on the foundation website that I learned about the genetic component of brain aneurysms. Because Shirley’s mother died at a young age, I decided to take a look at the medical records and was surprised to find the secondary cause of death listed as an aneurysm. Most causes of death during that era are listed as “natural causes”; this fact became an important piece of family health history. After reading that, I got our kids tested and began to talk to Shirley’s sisters about getting screened. My children did not have any aneurysms, however the screening revealed that one of Shirley’s sisters and a niece, who had been experiencing symptoms, had brain aneurysms. Because of Shirley’s death and my research, these two lives were saved.

What do you find most challenging about this cause?

Getting information to people to help them understand the signs and symptoms of this condition. That includes the medical community – many don’t ask the right questions. Also, it’s challenging to get funding for research – and getting research done to find out what causes the weakness in the artery wall.

When talking to people about brain aneurysms, what have you found most surprising?

Most people just don’t know what an aneurysm is – they can’t put it into context. They’re surprised to learn that it is the cause of 3-5% of strokes and that early detection can save a life. There is a lot of misinformation out there.

I wish more people knew about the Brain Aneurysm Foundation – how accessible they are and how easy it is to get information. They really define what an aneurysm is in understandable language. I’ve gone to the foundation’s Research Symposium and enjoyed being able to interact with the doctors and researchers who are leaders in the brain aneurysm field. Access to this kind of science and learning is one of the reasons why I support the foundation.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about donating to or volunteering with the foundation?

If you are thinking of donating, I would say your money goes to a very worthy cause – it goes toward research – and research is going to save lives. Donations at any level can really make an impact.

Shirley Demmer’s sudden collapse from a brain aneurysm on an ordinary Sunday evening in 2007 became the tragic introduction to her husband Bill’s mission to raise awareness and fund research. For some of Shirley’s family members it was lifesaving.
