Dear Supporters and Friends,

My name is Ja’Nylah Johnson and I am the 2017 Alameda Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. The Club has had an enormous impact on the various aspects of my life, beginning with my first time entering its Lincoln Avenue doors at just 7 years old. Growing up going to the Club has helped both my personal skillset and my personal development. Staff have helped me become more independent, feel important and think positively about myself. The staff continue to make me and my peers feel relevant by asking about our day and trying to get us to engage in activities we like. They care about our life achievements and struggles, and are eager to learn how they can help us.

Coming to the Club has helped me build a community. It keeps me active, healthy and away from irresponsible activities. One of my favorite activities at the Club was learning how to prepare and cook healthy foods. This skill was especially valuable to me because many times I had to cook for my grandmother or help her prepare her meals. Then I began helping my siblings. I also enjoy leading Keystone and the Mighty Missy’s Girls Group where I am learning many leadership skills. Without wonderful community donors like you, who have shown the Club constant support, my future would have been uncertain. Thank you for creating an invaluable impact on me and my peers. We are very grateful for you and all you do to help develop our Great Futures.
