I grew up and completed my College education in Taiwan. I had B.A. degree in Spanish Language and Li terature. Business w ith Latin Amer ican countr ies was booming in the 1980s. Dur ing my col lege years, I was able to work as Spanish Secretar y and Spanish language teacher for corporate cl ients. After having accumulated some savings, I came to Amer ica to pur sue fur ther studies.

I r eceived MLS from the Univer si ty of Wisconsin-Madison, worked one year as a Spanish cataloger for the Cali fornia Spanish Language Data Base,

and felt the needs to be more know ledgeable on technology-related issues. I r eturned to school for fur ther study and received my second master degree in CIS from the New York Insti tute of Technology.

I l iked to be challenged and always set up goal(s) to lead myself for dir ections. My cur rent posi tion as a

faculty l ibrar ian at the City Univer si ty of New York has fulf i l led a great par t of my l i fetime goals to become a professional l ibrar ian, scholar, and researcher.

Most people outside the l ibrar y wor ld thought that l ibrar ians are tr adi tionally conser vative, wear ing glasses, and dressed in plain outf i ts, etc. But the image of myself and many other l ibrar ians could tel l the tr uth? that we are di f ferent and we are a fun group of individuals w ith energy, passion, and interests.

I am a dancer  and I l ike to dance Zumba, bel ly dance, waltz, r umba, salsa, and much more. I love to

express my feel ings through the music and dance movements. In the 2015 ALA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, I provided enter tainments in CALA Banquet on June 28, 2015 in

San Francisco Chinatow n Imper ial Palace Restaurant. I was the belly dancer who contr ibuted two Middle-Eastern dances in the CALA Annual Event. I have been tr uly enjoying being myself on stage since I star ted learning dance 12 years ago. I t?s fun and enter taining and I 've per formed dance for over ten years. I encourage al l of you to pur sue your per sonal ambitions and interests.

(12 years) and practicing ballroom dances on Thursdays (10 years). On Saturday morning, I work out in the gym (10+ years) and cur rently teaching belly dance on Saturday afternoon (1 year ).

I work on my research studies and w r i tings on dai ly basis and also fol low up unfinished business on Sundays.

Do you have any other hobbies? Is ther e anyth ing el se you 'd l i ke to shar e w i th your

fel l ow l i br ar i ans?

Other hobbies include tr avel (I lead dancing on Royal Car ibbean Cruise and Carnival Glor y to New England), mountain-cl imbing, hiking, camping, photography, choreography (lead group dance for my dance students), talking Spanish w ith native speakers, and cooking (make Chinese dumplings).

Here?s something else that I?d l ike to share:

I have great exper iences on proposal w r i ting and has been taking a role as l ibrar y proposal evaluator in New

York State for more than decades:

Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC), Regional Bibliographic Data Bases and Interlibrary Resources Sharing Program (RBDB). Reading Team to evaluate l ibrar y grant proposals submitted to the New York State l ibrar y grant programs, 2001-Present.

Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO), Information Systems Advisory Group, Regional Bibliographic Data Bases and Interlibrary Resources Sharing Program (RBDB). Reading Team for the evaluation of grant proposals provided by the New York State Librar y grant programs, 1999-2005.

I w i l l be glad to help CALA for funding proposals or being a consultant/ r eviewer / edi tor in publications, thanks.

Andrew Lam is one of the CALA 2014 Best Book Award w inners and his Two Sons of China tel ls a compell ing stor y of an Amer ican Soldier and a Chinese Communist as they engage the Japanese in guer r i l la war fare dur ing Wor ld War II . I t is based on the l i ttle-know n, r eal-l i fe Amer ican Dixie Mission of 1944.

How did you get to hear about the Chinese Am er i can Libr ar ians Associat i on (CALA) and decide to subm i t an ent r y to the CALA Best Book Awar d?

When I star ted w r i ting my f i r st book, Saving Sight, about my work as an eye surgeon, I googled ?Chinese Amer ican authors? because I was cur ious about who was out there. Through that search I discovered CALA. Later on, my publisher and I thought Two Sons of China could be a good candidate for the book award.

We not i ced that you took an atypi cal r oute to becom e a novel i st , what do you th ink the biggest chal l enge in your path?

In my day job I?m a r etinal surgeon. I also have four kids. A lot of people f igure my biggest challenge is f inding

the time to w r i te, but i t?s not. For me, the r ate-determining step as a w r i ter is always inspir ation. You never know when you?ll come across a stor y that gets you really exci ted because you just have to share i t w i th other s. You can?t predict when you?ll be str uck by a great idea for a new stor y. When these special moments happen to me, the

w r i ting seems almost effor tless.

For example, although I?d long-aspir ed to w r i te a book that would help people better understand WWII in China, i t wasn?t unti l I discovered the tr ue stor y of the Dixie Mission? a group of Amer ican off icials sent to Yenan to investigate Mao?s Communist guer i l la f ighter s in 1944? that a l ight bulb went off in my head and I r eal ized that this could be the basis for a great stor y about a war -time fr iendship between two soldier s, one Amer ican and one Communist Chinese. After this epiphany, I couldn?t wait to get star ted w r i ting i t.

As a Chinese Am er i can, does your i dent i t y af fect your subjects and your appr oaches in w r i t i ng novels and how?

All w r i ter s w r i te best about what they know. I am an exper t at a few things. I?m a professional eye surgeon. I know what i t?s l ike to be a son, husband, and father. I studied mi l i tar y histor y at Yale. And I?m Chinese Amer ican. Al l of these elements f ind their way into my w r i ting because these facets compr ise who I am as a person.

So yes, being Chinese Amer ican informs a lot of what I w r i te. Even though I have never l ived in China and have never inter viewed a Chinese sol ider from WWII, I have a l i fetime of exposure to Chinese culture and histor y that enabled me to w r i te know ledgably about this time and place.

For Two Sons of China , did you wor k towar d your ending or did you f i nd the ending dur ing the w r i t i ng pr ocess? How do you weigh?the value of r esear ch, ex per iencing and im aginat i on i n cr eat i ng your epi c novel??

I knew from the outset that I wanted my novel to be about an Amer ican soldier and a Chinese guer i l la f ighter who star t out w ith nothing in common but form a brotherhood in battle that is severely tested by outside for ces beyond their control. I knew that at the end of the book these two heroes would make great sacr i f ices for each other, and I actually pictured the ending scenes of my book ver y ear ly on.

For me, the histor ical r esearch that goes into w r i ting is not only ver y

impor tant? i t?s also the most fun par t of a project for me. I t?s a thr i l l anytime I can include actual histor ical events, character s, and conversations into my nar ratives. In Two Sons of China, show ing the perspectives of Mao, Zhou Enlai , and the r eal Amer icans who interacted

w ith them was one of my goals. And much of what I w rote about the Dixie Mission r eal ly happened that way.

What does w r i t i ng?m ean to you in your l i fe? What would you tel l people about the im por tance of Libr ar ies? What do you have to say to the Chinese Am er i can l i br ar i ans?

In my day job, I gain a lot of fulf i l lment from helping my patients. I f ind surger y challenging and stimulating. But I?ve found w r i ting to be ver y fulf i l l ing as well . Wr i ting al lows me to be creative, to share my know ledge of histor y w ith other s, and to convey my passion for

cer tain stor ies that I think ever yone should know about.

Librar ies are one of the best insti tutions in our society. As a chi ld, I spent many hours in the l ibrar y r eading ever y nonfiction book in the kids? section that I could f ind. I think Chinese Amer ican l ibrar ians play a ver y impor tant role because i t?s so impor tant to ser ve the needs of this community. Opening r esources and improving their accessibi l i ty to this ethnic group improves know ledge, engenders civic engagement, and enhances our society. So THANK YOU

for al l you do to accomplish these impor tant goals!

Jour ney back f r om t he Hacking: CALA's Websit es and Syst ems af t er t he Hacking on July 7, 2015

Weiling Liu, CALA Webmaster (2015-2016)

On July 7, 2015, as we know, CALA?s main website and a few other si tes were unfor tunately hacked and went dow n. A few weeks later, the main website and some l istser vs were up on a new Web address (web-cala.org). We changed the website hosting provider after the hacking due to many reasons. After

exper iencing w ith the new provider for about one month, we felt that the exper ience was posi tive and moved to the new ser ver. Dur ing the past few months, al l possible r estor ing effor ts have been made. Now the main website, membership database system, chapter websi tes and a few other application systems are back to business. The systems/websites that are cur rently avai lable include the fol low ing:

1. Main website: http://cala-web.org

2. Intr anet (Membership Database) https://intr anet.cala-web.org (used to be my.cala-web.org)

3. Voting/Sur vey system

Due to some technical hurdles, the main website was not able to be r estored as before. The new banner was adopted w ith customizations from a draft design created by Tingting Peng, a student at the Univer si ty of I l l inois at Urbana-Champaign. Al l the pages need to be r el inked. Although most public pages are now avai lable, there are sti l l many broken l inks. The Web Committee is working di l igently on getting al l the pages restored. I would l ike to

take this oppor tuni ty to thank Tingting Peng for her f ine design, and thank the Web Committee members for their hard work in r estor ing the pages whi le car r ying out their routine assigned tasks. Thank you, ever yone, for your patience and understanding.
