FROM THE CHAIRWhat a year of change 2017 has been. If this year was an environmental roller coaster we would be hanging on for dear life. In this turmoil, surely each of us must do what we can to make sure the future of our planet is secure?

I am proud to be associated with EcoMatters Environment Trust as an organisation that strives through example, partnerships, and (when necessary) leadership to make a real difference in our quest for a sustainable future. The combined EcoMatters team of staff, board, volunteers, and supporters continues to work in the community and build meaningful relationships with like-minded individuals and organisations wherever we can.

It is often hard to measure the impact and contribution of a community organisation, but this report attempts to do just that.

Please read, enjoy, and consider becoming a supporter of EcoMatters.

FROM THE CEOWelcome to EcoMatters’ second annual report. Within these pages, we try to tell the story of some of the ways our community came together to do good for the environment between July 2016 and June 2017.

This year there was a real emphasis on reaching new parts of our community. We started the Bike Hub at Olympic Park, started an insulation business, created a Zero Waste Depot on Rosebank Road, and ran new educational programmes such as Co.Starters, a social enterprise start-up course to help get new social and environmental initiatives underway in our community.

And in between all this, we have of course continued to enjoy the amazing support of our funders and the community. We are hearing a lot of positive feedback about the direction EcoMatters is taking and the impact we are having.

We’re confident that we are set for our biggest year ever in 2018 and we are looking forward to carrying on our work together with you.

ECOHUB

The EcoHub is our home and a place where we hope you feel at home too. It is a space where you can learn new skills, gain inspiration to help our precious planet, and an EcoShop where you can pick up cool environmentally friendly goodies.

This year we’ve painted the EcoHub, featuring a new mural by the Kākano Youth Arts Collective. We opened a community Bike Hub, renovated our EcoShop, and continued to broaden the mix of workshops and education opportunities we offer.

Next year we want to continue to grow the EcoHub as a place for inspiration. Our ultimate vision is a community space which is home to a wide range of socially and environmentally focussed businesses and organisations - a true EcoHub in the heart of West Auckland. Watch this space!

ECOMATTERS BIKE HUBOur brand new community bike hub is now up and running! We’re busy supporting cycling in the city, and it’s a place for you to learn new riding skills and get your hands greasy.

We’re on a mission to make cycling affordable and fun. Look out for exciting workshops and events taking place this summer.

Our main highlight has been meeting and interacting with all the wonderful people from the community who want to cycle or learn more about cycling! We’ve been really inspired by the enthusiasm the community has shown for the bike hub. Every interaction is unique and special in its own way.

“THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING ME THE BIKE. I PRAY FOR YOU TO HAVE A LONG LIFE FULL OF HAPPINESS. YOU DON’T HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH YOU HELPED ME.”

EcoWest Festival is a month-long celebration of our proud eco-city heritage and a time to explore new ways of living more sustainably - and it’s going from strength to strength! This year we helped organise and promote more than 100 community events attended by more than 10,000 people. We’re grateful to all of the community groups and organisations participating and hosting activities - there are too many to name but you know who you are, thank you!

The festival is made possible with the support of our Western Local Boards. Without funding for EcoWest we wouldn’t be able to hold the festival so a special shout out also goes to them.

FOSTERING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS

“THE GUEST SPEAKERS WERE GREAT. IT WAS GOOD TO SEE REAL LIFE EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE THINGS WE WERE LEARNING.”

“IT WAS GREAT CONNECTING WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE; FEELING INSPIRED BY OTHER PEOPLE’S PROJECTS; BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR MY GOALS.”

We’re passionate about fostering a new breed of EcoWarrior - a person who develops products and services which benefit people and our planet as well as generating a modest profit. We want to stimulate and nurture innovation and ultimately demonstrate that one can care for the environment and still afford to buy a house (at least a tiny house!).

CO.STARTERS for Causes is EcoMatters’ social enterprise start-up course. Originating from Chattanooga in the United States, we’ve teamed up with AUT to bring the Causes programme to Auckland.

CO.STARTERS for Causes is aimed at individuals or organisations who would like to test and develop a social enterprise idea. Participants gain a deeper understanding of how to create a sustainable business, identifying whether or not an idea is good and how to change it to make it work. We work with local experts and mentors who share their business knowledge.

MEET AN INTERN: ALLAN SØRENSON Allan joined EcoMatters from Denmark and spent nearly six months with us developing an idea for an e-waste recovery service.

His insights led to prototyping an electrical repair service at our EcoDay - with retired electricians to help fix people’s broken down electrical appliances. He then went on to refine the concept and shared his thoughts for how EcoMatters could offer an ongoing service around this to prevent our old electrical appliances end up from going into landfill. Now that’s the kind of thinking that can really make a difference!

“GREAT GUYS, TURNED UP ON TIME, THEY WERE FRIENDLY AND DID A GREAT JOB. I’M A BUILDER, IT JUST MADE SENSE TO HAVE PROFESSIONALS INSTALL THE INSULATION, SO I COULD CARRY ON BUILDING!”

“I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND ECOMATTERS INSULATION, THE TEAM WERE ALL FRIENDLY AND KNOWLEDGEABLE.”

Everyone deserves to live in a warm, dry and snug home. Through Project HomeWise, we engage with ethnic minority groups to share tips on how to heat homes efficiently and keep them dry. We also provide advice to rental property owners through Healthy Rentals.

We know from experience that one of the best things you can do to keep your home healthy, reduce electricity bills and decrease your environmental footprint is to ensure your home is well-insulated. We’ve been providing advice on how to make houses more efficient for more than a decade, and now our team can also install insulation.

Quality insulation can reduce your annual power bill by as much as 30%! Call us for more information or visit our website.

YOUR WATEREcoMatters has been working with Watercare Services to develop its Water Advice Line and in-house water audits over many years. This is a free service that offers support and practical tips to help reduce household water usage.

Being a water conscious city is going to be a critical part of being a sustainable place to live in the coming century, and water efficiency is something everyone can be part of - and the best part - it also helps your household to save money and resources!

ZERO WASTEWe’re passionate about making it easy for everyone to minimise waste. We love recycling some of the items that don’t get collected as part of the council kerbside recycling. Our EcoHub is a handy drop off point for e-waste, soft plastics, polystyrene, batteries, curtains and even used toothbrushes!

Our new multi-purpose zero waste trailer attends community events and is used for Wash Against Waste, composting demonstrations and other waste minimisation projects. We’ve also helped Auckland Council create a Zero Waste Events website for event organisers, check it out at www.zerowasteevents.org.nz.

Households annually produce an average of about 200kg of organic waste which often ends up in landfill instead of becoming garden compost. Supported by Auckland Council, the Compost Collective is a partnership between EcoMatters and the Kaipātiki Project who are working together to get Aucklanders turning their household food waste into compost. The ethnically diverse programme employs 18 compost facilitators across the region. This year 527 workshops took place.

WOOD FOR GOOD SHOWCASE

Wood for Good is a start-up social enterprise operating out of our new depot that diverts useable untreated wood from landfill and redistributes it. We currently collect wood from local furniture manufacturers and then make them available at a low cost. They’re reused at preschools for carpentry, for DIY activities at events, and for keeping warm in winter.

Invasive weeds can spread from gardens and threaten our native ecosystems, but dealing with these pest plants can be daunting. We’re working on a three year project with the people of Piha and Huia to achieve zero density of climbing asparagus on private land. Climbing asparagus has been identified as the highest threat species to the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area.

We’re also working with residents to help create a weed-free buffer zone around our precious Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. We work in seven buffer zone hotspots on around 200 properties. Work is highly challenging with massive weed issues and often steep terrain.

POLLUTION PREVENTIONOur pollution prevention programme includes work in some of Auckland’s most iconic and vulnerable locations. We’re helping homeowners in Rodney and those close to the west coast lagoons reduce septic system contamination by offering free advice and technical checks.

We also educate businesses in industrial areas about how to prevent stream pollution and remind them about the consequences of contaminating our waterways, through innovative approaches which engage school children.

We love the energy, vibrancy and new ideas that young people bring to environmental challenges. This year we’ve supported kids and young adults to take environmental action through stream clean-ups, plantings, paintings and murals. We help to guide stream activities like bug monitoring and even offer equipment that kids can use to search for bats!

We love to host business groups for volunteer days on our environmental projects, and often volunteering is just the start of an ongoing relationship. Earlier in the year we took a group from Treasury Wine Estate Global out for a day of stream restoration volunteering, and that evolved into them supporting the conservation groups working on the North-West Wildlink by supplying wine for events for the groups to network and plan our conservation activities. BNZ - Closed for Good, Auckland Council staff, Corrections staff helped with garden and painting the building.

NATIVE PLANT NURSERYWorking together to help care for our parks and nature reserves is core to what we do. The process starts at Our Olympic Park nursery where eco-sourced native plants are grown from seeds collected locally in the Waitākere area. BUILDING COMMUNITYNORTHWEST WILDLINK GET TOGETHER

We’re always looking for ways to partner with others, for practical reasons and because we know we that sharing knowledge and inspiration helps us all achieve our goals. We’re host to a low carbon community of individuals, organisations and businesses interested in working together to minimise greenhouse gas emissions.

We’re also heavily involved in group restorative action, such as the North-West Wildlink helping to create an eco-corridor from the Hauraki Gulf to the Waitākere Ranges, the Waitākere Ranges Conservation Network, and the new Pest Free Waitākere initiative!

OUR STRATEGYOur strategy wheel that we created at the start of 2015 has continued to guide and inform our work in the past year.

The process of better aligning the organisation with the vision and mission is an ongoing one. But when EcoMatters adopted its new vision and mission we were serious about embodying the aspirations that it contains.

We didn’t want to be tokenistic in terms of our commitments to important Māori concepts such as kaitiakitanga (guardianship), wairua (spirit), and aroha (love). And restoring the Mauri (lifeforce) of our environment is indeed a task for all of us over the next century.

Recognising the special role that tangata whenua have in the NZ environmental landscape was another key reason why we adopted these important ideas. Iwi across the country have consistently shown the way to sustainably manage the future of our precious natural resources requires both a deep connection with te taiao (the environment) and intergenerational thinking.

We’re continuing to unpack the implications of our new vision and mission, but it’s driving everything that we do, and everything in our strategy wheel is an important part of that journey.

OUR STRATEGYAt the start of 2015 we adopted a new vision and mission andreorganised our operations and staff to make this happen.

We moved towards improved staff contracts in a bid toprovide greater job security to our team and ensureEcoMatters was an employer of choice in the environmentsector.

Adding in better research and evaluation capacity meant wecould start to deepen our environmental knowledge andmeasure our progress.

Our rebranding served to increase our credibility and helpsus reach and work effectively with the community and ourfunders.

A focus on improving our services, developing betternetworks, and measuring our impact all followed.

We plan to continue to ensure the financial sustainability ofthe organisation as we find new sources of revenue for theorganisation.
