708 Strong
and Counting! That’s how many client assists the Foundation had in 2015!
2015 Annual Report
In 2015, the Surayya Anne Foundation, Tulsa’s only Muslim owned and operated shelter, made a positive impact in the greater Oklahoma community by assisting individuals and families who were homeless, in distress and in crisis. The Foundation serves a wide variety of people including the disabled, mentally ill, working poor, the homeless, refugees and victims of domestic violence.
During Ramadan, the Foundation organized three community sponsored dinners for low
income families at local restaurants and clothed and fed over 200 people. In addition, the
Foundation successfully got families involved in the greater homeless community by participating in our 2nd annual “Nightlight Tulsa” event, feeding over 300 homeless people in downtown Tulsa and sponsored by the Foundation and Tulsa Muslims.
Last year the Surayya Anne Foundation in Tulsa provided 708 client assists to men,
women and children in Oklahoma in the form of emergency shelter services, long-term housing, bill paying assistance, eviction prevention, medical and dental assistance, help obtaining food stamps, public housing and employment, and feeding those in need. The
foundation assists on average around 59 Clients each month, including people of other
faiths. Throughout 2015, the Foundation received over 100 calls each month for emergency assistance and shelter services.

2015 Zakat Distributions in the State of Oklahoma
It’s shocking to imagine living without water or electricity but
many people do. Last year the foundation assisted numerous
families who had their utilities disconnected. When some
families became ill, they approached the foundation to assist
with the purchase of prescription drugs. While other clients had
emergency dental problems with abscesses, and were in
extreme pain, and some clients with cancer needed assistance
with payments not covered by government programs.
The Surayya Anne Foundation manages a zakat account that
allows donors to contribute their zakat funds for distribution to
Muslim families and individuals who qualify under the rules of
zakat. In 2015 the Foundation handed out $31,574.86 in
zakat funds. Clients, who qualify as zakatable, ask for
assistance and may direct the funds to emergency assistance in
the form of: rental eviction prevention, utilities, car repairs,
documentation, fees, fines, debts, driving school, food, medical
and other miscellaneous needs.
The Foundation saved money on food distribution expenses by
partnering with the Islamic Society of Tulsa food bank, which
regularly brings food to our clients onsite.
Low income working families and families in crisis approach the
foundation for rental assistance when they are often in the
process of being evicted. One of our major goals is to prevent
homelessness. A homeless individual or family may cost the
foundation around $7,000 to house in the shelter for one year.
Helping families and individuals stay in their homes and
apartments, thus preventing homelessness is a wise investment.
Alhamdulilah, last year the foundation handed out over $10,000
in zakat funds to Muslim families to prevent homelessness in the
Tulsa area.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OKLAHOMANS | I 2015 Annual Report 4
My family and I began going through a hardship when I lost my
job last year. I wasn't able to pay my rent and we were facing
eviction. I contacted Surayya Anne to get information on rental
assistance but instead of a temporary fix to my problems,
alhamdulilah, they helped me out with a long - term solution.
We moved into the shelter and were able to stay for free in
order to save whatever amount of money we could. And within
two months, I was able to find affordable, permanent housing
for my family.
The Surayya Anne Foundation helped my family in so many
ways during our transitional period. When I was facing eviction, I
thought that I wouldn't have anywhere to go, but the staff at the
Foundation ensured that they would help me however they
could, and they did. I met with a Case Manager regularly to
discuss my goals, how my plan for permanent housing was
coming along, and if there were any needs outside of the
housing that could be addressed. I felt that what seemed to be
such a hardship in the beginning of this time period was really a
blessing from Allah. I feel as though we became part of a bigger
family through meeting others at the Foundation. Although we
are no longer in the shelter, we stay in touch, and I am grateful
for this organization and all they have done and continue to do.

Please Help Us Assist Oklahoma’s Needy Families by Donating to Our Shelter Building Fund
The prophet pbuh said, “The good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: knowledge which he learned and then spread, a
righteous son (daughter) whom he leaves behind, a copy of the Qur’an which he leaves as a legacy, a mosque that he built, a house that he
built for wayfarers, a canal that he dug or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him
after his death.” Ibn Majah

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OKLAHOMANS | I 2015 Annual Report 10
What brought you to the Surayya Anne Foundation?
Before I came to Surayya Anne Foundation, I was at DVIS. They told me that my time would be up and I knew that I would have no place to go. I found the information for the Foundation and contacted Jenel. I was surprised that she responded so quickly! I told her my situation - that I am homeless and I am a foreigner with no income and nowhere to go. She took my case immediately and showed me the apartment. She was very nice, the apartment was nice and I could never have imagined finding a home without money. It was like a miracle for me because I had been homeless. Every week Jenel takes me to get groceries from the store and once a month, I get food
from the pantry at the mosque. Even though I'm not Muslim, everyone has been helpful, nice, caring and welcoming. They have never made me feel weird.
How has your life changed since coming to the Surayya Anne Foundation?
I was emotionally unstable when I first came. I spoke with Jenel about this and she helped me to get involved in religious activities again. Ms Allison even asked her mom to take me to Bible Study. I also started going to church again on a regular basis. My life has changed for the better and I am in good spirits. I have a home now and I am comfortable. I am learning more English and I volunteer every week at YWCA. I also volunteer once a month at the Food Pantry located at the Islamic Society of Tulsa.
Intern’s Donate Countless Hours Making a Positive Impact
Each year interns, as a part of their graduate or undergraduate programs, contribute hundreds of work hours to our Foundation. Their contributions have improved marketing, programs, manuals and client assistance.
