UNBOXING DAY 18th February - by Kaleb

On Wednesday, 18th February at 10:00 rooms 1, ,2 and 9 went to room 6. I saw lots of boxes with names on them. “There’s

mine,” I said to myself. We sat down in lines waiting impatiently for our chromebooks, eventually we were handed our

chromebooks. I couldn’t wait to open it, but we had to wait to do an official countdown… 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1.

I pulled the ribbon off the brown box, I furiously opened it, then I waited. “Ok, next you need to carefully open the white box so

you don’t break your brand new chromebook,” Mrs Henderson explained. Holding my excitement in, I carefully opened the white

box. There was my chromebook! I stuck the sticker on the bottom of my chromebook and opened the lid. It started off with a

whirr and the chrome sign appeared, it had the text, “sign in with your e-mail and password.”

“Ok, start packing up now, zip it up in your case and carry it back to class, carefully,” Mrs Henderson explained.

Now I have my chromebook I wish we did this earlier.

Duffy Books in Homes Values - Cool Kids Show / School Buddies / Kids Can Cook

At the start of the year we had a magic show by Al Greco and throughout the year we have been having Duffy shows. It’s about encouraging kids to read a lot more so you can be brainy.

Chef Chris Fortune visited our school with his mobile kitchen and prepared fresh delicious crepes with fillings straight from our school garden. In each class he chose a sous chef to assist with the preparation and cooking.Everyone was treated to a taste of the food and did not even have to clean up!It was a great day and worked in well with our 5 Plus a Day last week, Enviro schools and healthy lunches.

KapahakaAt the start of the year Whaia Sally, Matua Ken and Miss Ross got a bunch of students together and taught them a whole bracket of kapa haka songs.Whaia Sally came to school every Thursday to teach a lot of maori songs to put together for performances. Matua Ken tooks the boys out into a different room or outside to learn the haka.As a group we performed at the Kaikohe Cultural Festival, school Greats and Grans Day, at a tangi for a local identity and Age Concern.

Mr Carter-MayorMr Carter, the Mayor of the Far North came to speak to us about the future of IT in our schools. We were able to show him how we work using digital devices every day. we were also able to ask him questions about his very important role as Mayor.

It was June, the month of Matariki, the Māori New Year. This year I decided to make a mural with Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Craig. I knew what a mural was but I didn’t know what it would turn out like when we were all finished. There were also some more activities. Salt dough bone carving, waka making flax stars and fried bread.

Stella, Catherine, Kayla and Andrea all went to Kaikohe to challenge other schools in a speech contest. Kayla came 2nd, her speech was on diabetes. Andrea came 3rd, her speech was on cyber bullying. Stella came 4th, her speech was on bully free zones. Catherine did a speech on poaching. (Hunting poaching.) Ohaeawai school was proud of them.

Science FairAt the end of term two we had a science fair. All students had worked in groups to complete a science experiment that they would show to other people that came into to have a look at them. Me, Oscar & Brad and Dylan invented the one and only - the hovering disk!! The point of the hovering disk is to get a CD to hover. I was manning the stand for people to trial the experiment. at the end of the day I got to go absolutely nowhere to see anything at all, just sat there blowing a balloon up with carbon dioxide really boring, but I still enjoyed it.

In term 2, a group of 16 students were chosen to take part in the First tee programme. We had Mrs Hood come and teach us golf every Thursday, we went out on the field tolearn golf skills. We learnt about sportsmanship on and off the golf course as well.On the last day we went out for the day to the Kaikohe Golf Course and we had fish and chips for lunch.

Age Concern Visit At the end of August Age Concern from Kaikohe visited Room 2. The Kapa Haka group performed for them and we also performed Jump Jam for them. We prepared morning tea and after they had morning tea we showed them around the school. They especially liked the chickens, the garden and the library.

Greats and GrandsOn the 17th of September we invited our grandparents to greats and grands day. The kapa haka group performed the juniors performed and we had some writing that students wrote for their grandparents. Every student in the school had brought a plate for morning tea and we all got to have some after they had finished. After morning tea we played some games such as wheelbarrow racing and gumboot throwing. We enjoyed all the games and the grandparents that were left played too. Overall it was a great day and everyone enjoyed having their grandparents at school.

We had a lot of fundraisers for our ski trip. We had to raise around 30 thousand dollars. There was the fun lunchtime, possum hunt, disco, quiz night and many more. We have just recently had our ski trip, which would not have happened without the support of our parents. We appreciate the parents who helped and came on the ski trip.

On the 4 of september the league team went down to kaikohe To play league against all the schools in kaikohe. We all thought we would not make it to the finals, but we did. It was pouring with rain, We were all freezing, but we kept playing and in the end we won!!!. On the 30th November we travelled to whangarei to play in front of the kiwis . FIFAMembers of FIFA NZ came to our school promoting the Under 21 World FIFA tournament to be held in NZ next year. We had a great day learning new skills and activities to improve our soccer.

NetballThe annual students vs teachers netball game was held in Term 3. With a great student team this year the teachers were pushed to work hard, without too much cheating! It was a great game and although the teachers still won on the day, the students played fairly and showed good sportsmanship. It was a fun day.

Project Energise/Life Education Trust

Life Education Trust

Bridget and Harold visit us for a week in term 4 week 1. Bridget and Harold talked to us about keeping healthy and making good choices ahead in life. We also talked about how a car is like a human WOF, here are some reasons. A car is like a human because we both need energy, we both need to fuel up on energy, we also need water that is like fuel. A car and a human are alike because we are both quite expensive to feed. We can’t have the wrong food like lollies, drugs, cigarettes, fizzy drinks and other junk food. What goes through your body must come out, like a car with its exhaust pipe. Most of our goals were to look at the back of the food packaging, eat more fruit and to drink more water. By Andrea

Project Energise

Every two weeks Gina the Project Energise coordinator comes and helps us get fit. She also came in the class and explained how much sugar is in drinks.The fortnight after that she come in and cheek all of our lunch boxes for healthy food, about 20% of us had them. Now she is starting an athletics program that will make us fit for athletics day. By Katie

YoungLeaders

At the start of the year, year 5 and 6 students were asked if they would like to take on the responsibility of being a young leader. All those who were interested were asked to write an application that was then looked at by Mrs Whitelaw, Mrs Henderson and Mrs B.After a week the results were in.

Those who were chosen to be young leaders must take more leadership and responsibility around the school. We were in charge of the buddies, sausage sizzle and looking after the juniors. We also had to take the words on the school ladder very seriously. The words are:Responsible, reliable, caring, trustworthyHonest and respect.

This year on the 7th of November we had our annual pet day. A day where the students of Ohaeawai school can bring any pet (no dogs or horses) from home. This year we had a massive turnout we had everything from cats to electrical rabbits and everything in between.

Hi my name is Kaleb and I like playing tag with my friends who are myself and luke . I like reading books, they pass time. My dream is to become a helicopter or a plane pilot. My favourite game is capture the flag. I liked this year because we got to use chromebooks and I learnt more maths.
