1.     ACADEMIC  MATTERS    Cycle Tests:  Cycle tests form an integral part of the formal assessment programme at Reddam. The aim of the cycle test timetable is to ensure that conditions are fair and consistent for all students. These tests are timetabled for Tuesday and Friday afternoons with test subjects and their dates included in the Term Calendar, School Communicator and Redd-Ahead newsletter. Cycle tests account for a large part of the term mark for each subject.  When students are absent from assessments in Grade 12, the IEB demands a doctor’s note as an appeal for, rather than as a guarantee of, a concession being made. These appeals are not always accepted or allowed. We need to prove that in all grades our testing conditions are rigorous according to IEB requirements. Students need to write tests even if they are unwell, or they can appeal for a re-write. If a student is absent they need to collect a form from Mrs Ling and follow the procedures as laid out in the form.  Reddam applies the following policy:  (1) Students may only be absent from cycle tests for non-medical reasons with prior consent

from Mr Monk. Please ensure that no appointments are made at cycle test times. (2) If a student is absent from school on the day of a cycle test, or leaves school early due to

illness, a doctor’s note must be handed/emailed to Mrs Ling as soon as possible. Please note: Students may not phone their parents to ask them to collect them from school if they are ill. Mrs Ling will phone parents to collect their child from reception and a doctor’s note must be provided on the student’s return to school.

(3) Students who arrive late for school without a valid reason on a cycle test day may not be allowed to write the cycle test.

(4) Students will be afforded the opportunity to write the missed cycle test on the following Friday afternoon at 14h00 in Mrs Gush’s or Mrs Monk’s classrooms if their absence for the original cycle test has been verified.

(5) Students are afforded one opportunity to catch up the missed cycle test. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they complete the necessary form and arrive at the venue on a Friday afternoon to write the test.

(6) Students are permitted to write the missed cycle test as this forms an important part of their academic progress and measurement; however we reserve the right to award a zero unless an appropriate explanation has been given.

(7) If a student misses any three cycle tests in the school year, the student will not be eligible for any subject academic awards at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony.
