NCAA DIVISION III
In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.
The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.
Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes
the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.
The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.
The Three D’s:
DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.
DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience.
DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

BARNES PE CENTERHOME OF THE SCOTS
Barnes Physical Education Center was built in 1972 and named in honor of Covenant’s second president, Dr. Marion D. Barnes. The facility plays host to the Scots’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs as well as other athletic department needs.
During the summer of 2013, Barnes PE Center received a facelift with new interior paint jobs and championship banners honoring all 13 of Covenant’s athletic programs. New bleachers were installed in October of 2013 to update the facility further. Seating capacity is set at 650.
The main floor houses the game court to go along with offices for athletic administration. On the first floor are located an aerobic exercise room, weight room and more office space. The third floor has additional coaches and faculty offices and a classroom.
Although a small venue, Barnes can become loud and raucous as spectators sit close to the action. In 2012-13, the Scots men’s basketball team used their home-court advantage to secure a 9-3 home record. During the 2013-14 season, the volleyball team saw an increase in total attendance for the season.

Joanna Ehman Head CoachJoanna Ehman will enter her second season at the helm of
the volleyball program in 2014 after being named the head
coach in the spring of 2013.
Before being named head coach, Ehman served two
years as an assistant under former Lady Scots head coach
Heather Taylor, helping Covenant to 47 wins over those
two seasons.
“I feel blessed to be able to take on this role. Coach
[Heather] Taylor has poured so much into the team during
her time here and has built a successful volleyball program.
Now, after playing for her and coaching under her, I
have the opportunity to continue to build on what she
established,” said Ehman at the time of her hiring. “Coach Taylor not only has a passion for the game, but a heart for
ministering to her players. I am thankful for the example she has set for me as well as the team, and I am excited to
move into this role after being mentored by her.”
“I am excited to have Joanna’s leadership as we move the volleyball program into the next phase with hopefully
full membership in the NCAA and USA South Athletic Conference,” commented Covenant Director of Athletics Kyle
Taylor. “She is an incredibly hard worker, knowledgeable volleyball coach, and up and coming recruiter. She has a
passion for the game of volleyball, knows her stuff, and what she doesn’t know has the humility to ask questions
and learn.”
In her first season, Ehman continued the success of her predecessor as the Lady Scots finished 21-11 overall and
11-5 in their first year as members of the USA South Athletic Conference. Ehman’s team advanced to the semifinals
of the USA South Tournament before being eliminated by eventual champion Maryville. Two players (Chelsea
VanDyk and Stephanie Kirkpatrick) were selected to USA South All-Conference teams. Additionally, she had five
players earn USA South All-Academic honors and her team was an AVCA Team Academic Award winner.
Ehman’s playing experience started when she was a child and continued all the way through college, where she
was a setter for the Lady Scots from 2006 to 2009. Her collegiate career defined her as one of the best setters in
conference - both the AAC (2006-2008) and GSAC (2009) - and Covenant history. Head Coach Heather Taylor noted
Ehman to be a true student of the game and consequently named her captain of the team during her junior and
senior years. She finished her career with 1,759 assists, 699 kills and 1,213 digs in 126 career matches.
During her high school years, Joanna was a setter and outside hitter for the Lady Eagles of North Cobb Christian
School in Kennesaw, Georgia. In 2009, she was inducted into the NCCS Hall of Fame for her efforts on the court.
Ehman’s coaching experience began in 2008 when she led a 16-year-old club team for Dig-to-Win, a volleyball
club operating out of Chattanooga. She gained further coaching experience with Choo Choo City Volleyball Club,

prior to taking an assistant coaching position at Bryan College for the 2010 season. As the top assistant at Bryan,
Ehman was able to stake her first collegiate victory during a medical absence taken by head coach Leo Sayles. For
the season, the Lady Lions went 22-15 before being eliminated from the semifinal round of the AAC Conference
Tournament.
Ehman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Covenant College. She is married to Doug Ehman
(Covenant, ‘09) and the couple lives in the St. Elmo community of Chattanooga at the foot of Lookout Mountain.

Jason Rhine Full-time Assistant and JV Coach
Jason Rhine was hired in August of 2013 and the 2014 season will mark
his second with the volleyball program.
Rhine came to Covenant from Trinity International University where
he assisted for three seasons under Trojans head coach Karen Hall
while completing his Master of Divinity at Trinity Evangelical Divin-
ity School. While at TIU, Rhine was responsible for practice planning,
scouting and in-game coaching. Additionally, he assisted in recruiting,
travel arrangements and other duties.
“I am excited about bringing Jason on board at Covenant,” said Cov-
enant head coach Joanna Ehman said. “He has a heart for the Lord
and a clear passion for coaching as his ministry.”
Rhine also gained experience as a coach as he guided two differ-
ent teams within the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club organization
in 2012 and 2013 along with two seasons as head coach at Quality
Schools International in Dongguan, China from 2008-09.
“I’m really excited to help further the mission of Covenant College by
joining the volleyball program,” said Rhine at the time of his hiring. “I
hope together we can build upon recent success as we look toward
postseason eligibility in Division III.”
Rhine graduated cum laude from Wheaton College in May of 2007
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science and Biblical Studies. He completed his Master of Divinity de-
gree in May of 2013 and graduated summa cum laude.
“I am confident that bringing his experience and new perspective into our program is a step in the right direction
as we work to be competitive in the USA South,” continued Ehman.

Volleyball Looks Towards Promising 2014 Season
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- With the program on the rise, expectations are once again high for the Covenant volleyball
team and head coach Joanna Ehman. Coming off a third straight 20-win season in 2013, the Lady Scots are looking
to continue building a culture of success.
Last season, Covenant entered its first year in the USA South and wound up with a 21-11 overall record and an 11-5
mark in conference play. The team advanced to the semifinal round of the USA South tournament before bowing
out to eventual champion Maryville.
“We were competitive last year and we feel we can build upon that,” said Ehman, who enters her second year at the
helm of the program. “Losing in the semifinals to the eventual champion was motivating for us and our goal is to
improve on that this year.”
Covenant was selected to finish third, behind Piedmont and Maryville, in the USA South’s South Division by the
league’s coaches in the preseason poll. Overall, the Lady Scots were picked fifth in the conference.
The pieces are there for the Lady Scots to have another successful run in the regular season and be a threat in the
conference tournament. USA South All-Conference selections in junior Chelsea VanDyk and Stephanie Kirkpatrick
return as do key juniors Hannah Rogers and Cora Schroeder. Also returning this year are juniors Jaclyn Stuart and
Kelsey Mathis along with sophomores Caroline McLeod and Mariah Corney.
“Our returners are hungry and motivated after the way last year ended,” said Ehman. “We expect those players to
step up and lead the team to a finish they are looking for. They aren’t satisfied from last year.”
VanDyk had another outstanding season in 2013 as she racked up 380 kills (3.62 kills per set), which was good for
eighth in the USA South, with a hitting percentage of .302. In two years, VanDyk has accumulated 813 kills. She

finished fourth in the conference with 104 total blocks and was named to the All-Conference first team.
Kirkpatrick is the lone four-year senior on the team and has accomplished a lot both on and off the court in her
career. She tallied an even 1,000 assists last year (8.40 assists per set) and had 17 double-doubles with assists and
digs. Kirkpatrick was named to the USA South All-Conference third team and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District
honors for a second straight year.
“Stephanie has accomplished a lot in her career,” noted Ehman. “She has learned to rise to the occasion and wants
the team to do the same. She is resilient and a fighter who will inspire her team to be the same way. She has a lot of
responsibility this year, but she is up to the task.”
Rogers and Schroeder have been solid in each of their first two years. Last season, Rogers recorded a career-high
265 kills, with a kills per set average of 2.25, while Schroeder had 273 kills and 2.29 kills per set.
Coming back to Covenant this season is junior Pretoria den Boer. After taking a year off, den Boer returns to aid the
right side attack. As a sophomore in 2012, den Boer played in 33 matches and registered 169 kills, 207 digs and 37
total blocks.
Ehman’s recruiting class netted seven freshmen and one transfer. The freshman class is highlighted by twin sisters
Ginny and Schuyler Moore (Fort Myers, Fla.). The Moore twins were both on the AVCA Under Armour Watch List as
seniors and picked up many accolades throughout their high school careers.
“Ginny and Schuyler have done a lot and we are excited about what they bring to the table,” remarked Ehman.
The transfer is junior Chloe Carlson. The younger sister of former Lady Scot standout Estes Carlson, Chloe comes
from Biola University where she ran track & field and cross country.
The rest of the recruiting class includes Christina Argaez (Lake Forest, Calif.), Jordan Eastridge (Salem, Ind.), Jessica
Seehorn (Dalton, Ga.), Laura Scott Tomlin (Watkinsville, Ga.) and Maddie Wieskamp (Grimes, Iowa).
“We are excited to watch the freshmen come in and challenge the team,” said Ehman. “Everyone will have to work
every day to earn their spot. They will make practices more competitive and make our roster much deeper than in
past years.”
Covenant faces one of its most difficult schedules in program history this season. The Lady Scots face several tough
non-conference opponents including Birmingham Southern, Berry, Trevecca Nazarene, Sewanee, Mount St. Joseph,
Transylvania, Bethany (W.V.) and others.
“We won’t have an opportunity to let up early in the season,” said Ehman of her schedule. “You want to win games
in a season where every win is a challenge. Our girls seem to really enjoy the competition.”
After a weekend trip to the MckAttack Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, Covenant will open the home portion of its
schedule on Sept. 3 against Wesleyan at 7 p.m.

32 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2014 COVENANT COLLEGE
With a new coach and a new conference, the Covenant volleyball team still recorded its third straight 20-win season in 2013. Under first-year head coach Joanna Ehm-an, the Lady Scots finished 21-11 overall and reached the semifinals of the USA South tournament.
Ehman, a two-year assistant coach at Covenant, took over the program this season and continued the growth that it saw under previous head coach Heather Taylor. Over the last three years, Covenant has a record of 68-28 (.708 winning percentage).
Leading the way in 2013 was sophomore Chelsea VanDyk. The reigning GSAC Player of the Year again had an outstanding season, despite missing a handful of matches due to an injury. VanDyk ranked fourth in the conference in kills per set with 3.62, fifth in hitting per-centage at .302, and first in blocks per set averaging 0.99. VanDyk was named to the All-Conference first team.
Junior setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick also put together another solid campaign as she earned third team All-Conference honors. Kirkpatrick averaged 8.40 assists per set to go along with 2.90 digs per set on the year. She registered 17 double-doubles on the year. Additionally, Kirkpatrick was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-Dis-trict team for a second straight year.
The lone senior on the squad was libero Estes Carlson. Carlson wrapped up her career earning three USA South Defensive Player of the Week honors. She also averaged 4.13 digs per set, fourth best in the conference.
Sophomores Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers played in all but one set during the year and continued to improve upon their solid freshman seasons. Schroeder was second on the team with 2.29 kills per set, while Rogers was third averaging 2.25 kills per set. Two other sophomores in Anna Swain (2.13 digs per set) and Jaclyn Stuart (1.60 digs per set) contributed significantly.
Freshmen Caroline Cone (1.02 digs per set, 24 service aces) and Mariah Corney (1.84 digs per set) also saw significant playing time in their first year.
The Lady Scots got off to a great start as they won six of their first eight contests before conference play began. In non-conference play, Covenant played tough competition in NCAA Division II member Trevecca Naza-rene and highly-ranked Division III power Emory. Emory ended up reaching the Division III final four before losing to eventual national champion Calvin.
“This was definitely the toughest schedule that Cov-enant has played through in the recent history of our program,” said Ehman. “Next year will be tough as well.”
Entering the season, Covenant was predicted to finish second in the USA South’s South Division, and fourth overall in the league, by the conference’s 13 coaches. The Lady Scots ended up third in the South Division with an 11-5 record, but lost to just three teams (Maryville, Piedmont, Averett) in the league.
Covenant had seven three-set victories in USA South play and entered the conference tournament with the third seed from the South. The Lady Scots won their opening match in four sets over Meredith to setup the third matchup of the year against Maryville. Despite a valiant effort, Covenant was downed by Maryville in four sets to end the season. Maryville would go on and win the USA South title.
“I am proud of the fight and the hard work that our girls put in this year,” added Ehman. “With a new coach, a new conference, and very different team, it could have been the kind of season where things didn’t go well and then everyone could have said it was just a rebuild-ing year. I wasn’t going to be content with that, and our team made it clear that they wouldn’t be OK with it either.”
This season also saw some of the largest crowds in recent memory at Barnes Physical Education Center. The Lady Scots drew an estimated crowd of 350 for a home contest with Piedmont and had four other matches with attendance numbers near or above 150. An average of 154 fans, fourth best in the league, attended the eight home contests.
Awards:
USA South All-Conference Chelsea VanDyk - 1st team Stephanie Kirkpatrick - 3rd team Hannah Rogers - All-Sportsmanship

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?
A booster is an individual that:
• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.
If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].
What is an extra benefit?
Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.
Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:
• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.
