Bold-Home match

2012 Schedule The MIAACentral Oklahoma is in its first year as a mem-

ber of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Ne-braska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Associa-tion.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Divi-sion II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently con-ducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soc-cer, basketball, indoor and out-door track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Mis-

souri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph Mc-Fillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded Mc-Fillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expan-sion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Mis-souri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the

1989-90 season.Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the

1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.

sCHOOl niCknaMe“Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. abOUt tHe COVer

edGar MirakU

In his first year as the helm of the Central Oklahoma program is Edgar Miraku, a former assistant coach for the Bronchos who enjoyed a sensational high school coaching career before returning to the college ranks.

Miraku took over the UCO reigns on Feb. 4 after serving as as head coach at Edmond Memorial the last seven years, guiding the Bulldogs to a phenomenal 209-48 record and four Class 6A state championships.

Edgar led EMHS to the first of those state titles in his initial year, with the Bulldogs going 41-16 in capturing the 2005 crown. A 24-9 season that included a state

semifinal appearance followed and Memorial won another championship in 2007 to cap a 31-4 year.

The Bulldogs went 27-3 and made it to the state quarterfinals in 2008 before win-ning back-to-back titles in 2009 and ‘10, going a combined 62-8 those two years. Memorial finished 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals last fall.

Miraku was a remarkable player in his own right, competing professionally in his native Albania for four years. He was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95, winning a silver medal in the 1993 Balkan Championships.

Miraku came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program, serving as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Bronchos went 127-75 during that span, qualifying for the Lone Star Conference Tournament every year.

Edgar has coached several club teams during his career, including a lengthy stint with the Oklahoma Peak Perfor-mance (OP2) junior club team. He led OP2 to a 58-18 record and fifth-place national finish in 2002-03, with the 2009 team finishing third in the nation.

Miraku has also been actively in-volved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and served as head coach for two years before com-ing to UCO. He guided the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup.

Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden).

She was part of a two-setter system throughout her career with the Bulldogs and played in every set her last two years. Kylie was a three-time honorable mention All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association selection and

also earned Academic All-MIAA honors three times.Easlon earned a psychology degree from TSU and is working on her master’s in business admin-

istration at UCO.

GinGer williaMs

In her first year as a student assistant coach at Central Okahoma is Ginger Williams, who ended a four-year career with the Bronchos last season.

A libero/defensive specialist throughout her four years at UCO, Williams finished with 1,551 career digs while playing in 468 sets.

She had 305 digs as a true freshman in 2008 and then topped the Bronchos in digs the next two years, collecting 483 in 2009 and 473 the following season to rank among the Lone Star Conference leaders both years. Ginger had 290 digs last year while serving as team captain.

A prep standout at Edmond Santa Fe High School, Williams helped lead the Wolves to one state title and two runner-up finishes and she finished in the top 25 nationally in digs as a senior.

Ginger, who is married (Ben), is completing work on her elementary education degree.

Patty stein

Helping the Central Oklahoma program this year as a manager and bench statistician is Patty Stein.

A graduate of Edmond Memorial High School, Stein played school and club volleyball for six years before getting involved with statistics. She helped UCO coach Edgar Miraku in that capacity for three years at Memorial in addition to assisting him with his club teams and the U.S. Men’s National Sitting Team.

Patty is a sophomore majoring in elementary education.

is a proven player with a lot of experience and we’ll be leaning on her a lot on the right side.”

Middle blOCkerThe Bronchos appear in good shape here with

a pair of returning starters in up-and-coming sophomores Jordan Jacobs and Juliette Smith and both should be much improved with the experience they gained last year.

Jacobs was third on the team in kills with 274 while adding 77 total blocks and Smith had a team-high 110 blocks to go with 116 kills.

Freshman Talia Stanley has a chance to step in and help out.

Coach Miraku Says: “Juliette and Jordan are both returning

and we’re happy for that. They gained a lot of

experience last year and we know what they can do for us. Talia will push those two in the middle and we may also use her on the right side.”

liberOA junior veteran who should be one of

the top back-row defenders in the league returns here.

Tate Hardaker collected the fourth-most digs in school history last season (585)

and is a proven commodity at this crucial position with her passing, serving and serve

receiving ability.Sophomore Carissa Ophus will see time in

a defensive specialist role, as could freshmen Barbara Jackson and Lauren Miller.

Coach Miraku Says: “Tate is our captain and brings a lot of leadership to the team, so we’re happy to have her back for what she does on and off the court. Carissa will help out on the back row and a couple of freshmen will as well.”

setterUCO had to scramble after losing its return-

ing starter to academics at the end of the spring semester, adding junior college transfer Carina Emsermann over the summer.

She’s expected to take over, with senior Faith Harmon back to help out after sitting out last year.

Coach Miraku Says: “This is a key position for us. Carina did a good job at Redlands last year and has the ability to really lead us. It was good to have Faith join the team with the experi-ence she has.”

A new coach, a new conference and a host of new players will make for an interesting season at Central Oklahoma in 2012.

Edgar Miraku has taken over the coaching reigns and will lead the Bronchos as they make their debut in the rugged Mid-America Intercol-legiate Athletics Association this season, with seven newcomers -- including five freshmen -- making that transition even tougher.

“We want to do the best we can, but we’ve also got to be realistic about what’s ahead,” said Miraku, a former UCO assistant who went 209-48 and won four state championships at Edmond Memorial High School. “The competition in the MIAA is going to be great, with four or five teams in the top 20, and we’re really young.

“I think we have talent, but it’s a young team and a lot of them are new. We’ve got to do a good job with team chemistry and jelling together.”

UCO returns six letterwinners from last year’s 19-14 team and each of them saw extensive starting duty.

Senior Morgan Roy leads the way, with the Bronchos also returning junior captain Tate Hardaker and sophomores Sam Cool, Jordan Jacobs, Carissa Ophus and Juliette Smith.

A position-by-position look at the Bronchos: OUtside Hitter

There’s a myriad of possibilities here, with plenty of returning talent and several highly-touted newcomers vying for playing time.

Senior Morgan Roy spearheads the outside hitters and will probably man the right side after collecting 342 kills and 330 digs last year. Sophomores Sam Cool and Carissa Ophus both saw extended starting duty in 2011 and should be much improved.

Junior transfer Vanessa Gomes is expected to have an impact, while freshmen Laura Camp-bell, Tyler Gromann and Barbara Jackson will all push for action. Rookie Talia Stanley could also see time on the right side.

Coach Miraku Says: “We’ve got a lot of op-tions and I can see several players rotating in and out until we find the right combination. Morgan

HaMiltOn Field HOUseCentral Oklahoma plays its home volleyball matches in Hamilton Field House, which opened

its doors in 1965.The Bronchos have an impressive 206-74 (.736) record at Hamilton Field House, including a

101-25 (.802) mark over the past 12 seasons. UCO went 9-1 at home last season while playing as an NCAA Division II independent and takes an eight-match home winning streak into 2012.

The Bronchos have 12 matches at HFH this season.

Hamilton Field House was re-named from Bron-cho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The 3,000-seat facility underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of indi-vidual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added two years ago.

Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads. Numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

*-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match
