sCHOOl niCknaMe“Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

JeFF bOylandIn his ninth season at the helm of the Central Oklahoma program

is Jeff Boyland.Boyland has led the Bronchos to a stellar 173-90 record in eight

years, qualifying for the NCAA Division II national tournament twice. He coached 20 All-Lone Star Conference or All-LSC North Di-

vision players during UCO’s tenure in that league and has also had four All-South Central Region performers and one All-American.

Jeff took over the reigns in 2003 and led the Bronchos to a 23-7 record and a share of their third straight North Division crown, with UCO going 21-9 and finishing as LSC North runner-up in 2004.

Central rode an 18-match winning streak to a 27-8 finish in 2005, going a perfect 12-0 to run away with the LSC North crown and make it to the national tourna-ment for just the third time in school history.

Boyland’s Bronchos went 21-11 and were LSC North Division runners-up in 2006 before putting together one of the best seasons in school history in 2007.

UCO matched the school record for wins in finishing 32-7 and was runner-up in the overall league standings and the LSC Tournament in earning a national playoff bid, winning its opening match in the South Central Regional before falling to host Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals.

A young squad that was decimated by injuries struggled to a 13-21 record in 2008 and UCO went 16-16 in 2009 despite again battling a rash of injuries to key players. The Bronchos bounced back with another 20-win season last year, finishing 20-11.

Jeff came to Edmond as a full-time assistant coach in 2002 after an amazing two-year head coaching stint at Mid-America Christian Uni-versity in Oklahoma City.

He led Mid-America to a 71-11 record and back-to-back trips to the National Christian Collegiate Ath-letic Association (NCCAA) Division II national tournament, with the Lady Evangels capturing the national championship in 2001.

Mid-America went 34-8 and was a third-place national tournament finisher in Boyland’s first season in 2000, then followed with a 37-3 campaign and the national title the next season. He was Southwest Region Coach of the Year both years and was the NCCAA National Coach of the Year in 2001.

Boyland, who has a 244-101 record in 10 years as a head coach, helped UCO to the LSC North Division championship and a national tournament berth in a stellar 30-7 campaign in 2002 before taking over the reigns after the season.

Jeff was an assistant coach at Santa Fe High School in the early 1990s, helping the Wolves to consecutive state titles, and he served as a volunteer assistant at UCO in 1995 and ‘96. Boyland left UCO to fulfill a military commitment, which he completed in 2000 before taking over at Mid-America.

Boyland, who received his bachelor’s degree in management from Mid-America, is married (Gina) and has two children (Taryn and Bryce).

three freshmen set to join the lone returner, junior letterwinner Halie Harington.

Harington picked up valuable experience last year in her first season with the Bronchos and is expected to be a mainstay at the net in 2011, with the rookie duo of Jordan Jacobs and Juliette Smith ready to contribute immediately.

Freshman Kristina Bergman is slated to sit out the year as a medical redshirt.

Coach Boyland Says: “Don’t be fooled by our young middles. This is a group of very talented and athletic players. Halie has worked hard to change her blocking and has taken her play to a new level. Jordan and Juliette are very different, but it will

be hard to keep them off the court.” liberO

Defense is UCO’s most expe-rienced component, with a senior veteran and sophomore standout

paving the way.Ginger Gowen had a team-high

473 digs last year and is back for her fourth year of starting duty, while Tate

Hardaker had 346 digs and played in every set as a rookie.

Those two are expected to share the libero and defensive specialist duties,

with freshman Ashley Hamil looking to provide quality depth.

Coach Boyland Says: “We’re very fortunate to have such a great group of

defensive talent. I expect a lot from them and know they’ll rise to the task. Ginger is a proven veteran and a great leader, both on and off the court. Tate continues to improve and we have great expectations for Ashley.”

setterA pair of sophomores will battle it out here,

with both more than capable of leading UCO.Amy Kangas lettered in a reserve role last

year and is back after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery, while transfer Bella Romero returns to the court after sitting out last year. She started as a freshman at Division I Maryland-Eastern Shore

Coach Boyland Says: “I don’t measure our setters by their height but by their heart. Both Amy and Bella are very solid and capable setters. Amy has fully recovered from her surgery and is ready to go. Bella is a hidden gem who has a huge serve and is a true leader on the court.”

It will be transition period for Central Oklaho-ma in 2011 as the Bronchos will see a significant change in their roster while also spending the year with no conference affiliation.

Ninth-year head coach Jeff Boyland will have eight newcomers -- seven freshman and a Division I transfer -- on his 14-player roster and UCO will compete as an NCAA Division II independent this season before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012-13.

“This year we will venture into un-charted waters with so many new players and the fact that we don’t have a confer-ence home,” said Boyland, who has a 173-90 record with the Bronchos. “I’m excited about the challenges that face us this year and expect our team to rise to the occasion.

“Our opponents will look at our roster and be surprised with the youth that we’ll have on the court, but I think once they play us they’ll understand we have a great deal of talent.”

UCO has six letterwinners back from last year’s 20-11 team, led by seniors Ginger Gowen and Alex Richardson.

Also back are juniors Halie Harrington and Morgan Roy along with sophomores Tate Hardaker and Amy Kangas.

A position-by-position look at UCO: OUtside Hitter

The Bronchos will see a mix of seasoned and new talent here in looking to replace two all-conference players.

Hard-hitting senior Alex Richardson was third on the team in kills last year with 273 and returns to lead the way. Junior Morgan Roy is an experienced player and the front-runner to fill the other starting spot.

Freshmen Sam Cool, Carissa Ophus and Heather Erickson will all compete for time.”

Coach Boyland Says: “Alex has really improved over the past two seasons and I expect Morgan will step up and contribute at either the outside or right-side positions. Our freshman will have a lot to learn early, but I’m confident they’ll make the transition quickly and do a great job for us.”

Central Oklahoma reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in three years and made its final appearance in the Lone Star Conference Tournament in 2010.

The Bronchos tied for fifth in the league standings before falling in the first round of the LSC Tournament to finish 20-11.

It was UCO’s last season in the LSC, with the Bronchos to compete as Division II independents in 2011 before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Ath-letics Association in 2012.

“We had a pretty good year for being as young as we were,” head coach Jeff Boyland said. “We lost some tough matches and were up-and-down most of the sea-son, but overall I was pretty pleased with what we did.”

UCO started the season at the Lady Buff Classic and followed an opening loss with three straight wins in that event before going on the road for a four-set win over near-by rival Oklahoma City.

The Bronchos went 2-2 at the Angelo State Invitational before downing Dallas Baptist in the home opener on Sept. 14 and then opened conference play with back-to-back road wins.

A non-conference road win over East Central and home LSC rout of Eastern New Mexico got UCO to 11-3 on the year and 3-0 in the league, before a five-match winning streak was ended by West Texas A&M.

The Bronchos rebounded with a three-set sweep of league rival Southwestern Oklahoma and went 2-1 at the Arkansas Tech Invitational

before losing two consecu-tive LSC road contests.

UCO came back with four straight wins -- two in league play -- and capped that run with a come-from-behind five-set triumph at Dallas Baptist.

That had the Bronchos at 18-7 overall and 6-3 in the conference, but three losses in a row put UCO in danger of missing the LSC Tourna-ment for the first time ever.

Central responded in its final two regular season matches, rolling to three-set sweeps of Southeastern Oklahoma and East Central to tie for fifth.

But the season ended in the first round of the LSC Tournament with a loss to Angelo State.

Zuela Adom and Kristen Wilson both earned first-team All-LSC recognition.

Hamilton Field House was re-named from Bron-cho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The 3,000-seat facility underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of indi-vidual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added two years ago.

Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads. Numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

The MIAACentral Oklahoma will compete as an

NCAA Division II independent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-socition in 2012-13.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Mis-souri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first orga-nized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts 17 championships (eight men, nine women).

Champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, base-ball, tennis and golf for men and volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball, golf and tennis for women.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, changing its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri still remain in the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include

only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (then known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Mis-souri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (lat-er Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years be-

fore his retirement in 2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen

and served as commissioner until 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter

took over.Southwest Baptist brought

membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the conference added Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri West-

ern in the 1989.Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA

following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Oma-ha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

In 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO, Northeastern State, Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood to become members of the league.

Those four schools will begin league play in 2012-13, which will give the MIAA 15 member schools after the depature of Nebraska-Omaha.
