Lamorinda Kids Read! 2013 Join Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga kids of all ages with our first ever community wide read for kids!

Al Capone Does My Homework is the final installment in the life of Moose Flanagan, a boy who lives on Alcatraz Island during the 1930s. The story opens withgood news; Moose’s father, Cam, has been promoted to associate warden of the island’s infamous prison. Inmate No. 85 (Capone) sends Moose another cryptic note, written on Moose’s homework (“Luckily, he wrote in pencil”), which helps Moose and his affable gang sort the good guys from the bad. Choldenko continues to infuse the Alcatraz community with warmth and originality and despite being “the roughest hard-time prison in America,” by the end of this winning trilogy series, it’s also a place Moose comes to proudly call home.

Pick up a copy of the book at any Lamorinda Library and come hear award-winning author Gennifer Choldenko at the Lafayette Library & Learning Center Community Hall, on September 5, at 6:30 pm.

Other Lamorinda Kids Read events will include essay writing contest, related craft programs, and gangster theme party. Ask your local children’s librarian for more information and to pick up a copy of the book to read and share with your family.

Beginning Obedience: Building a RelationshipAges 18Y and up Dog Dynamics, Inc.

dogs 20 WeeKs+Now is the time to bring out the best in your dog. In this foundation class your dog learns how to walk nicely on a leash, sit and stay down, come when called, not to bolt through doors, to leave items alone, not to jump up, and how to behave when groomed or examined. With these skills, your dog will have a more meaningful life, be handy around the house, and be a welcome part of society. The first class of the session is mandatory, and you attend without your dog. Bring a copy of your dog’s vaccination records for the instructor to keep. Minimum age limit for handler is 18. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

History of European CivilizationAges 18Y and up James HadleyThese popular multimedia lecture series provide a grand tour of European civilization. The lectures put the great creative accomplishments of the period in a context such that the connections between them and the history of which they are a part of may be understood. The visual arts, music, literature, and history are all here, treated from a thoroughly interdisciplinary point of view. Extensive use is made of slides, literary excerpts, and recordings.

Ancient civilizAtionThis lecture series provides a grand tour of the ancient Mediterranean world from the building of the pyramids to the founding of the Roman Empire. Buildings like the Temple of Luxor and the Parthenon; works of literature including the Old Testament and the Dialogues of Plato; and personalities like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar will all be on the program. The lectures put the great creative accomplishments of the period in a context such that the connections between them and the history of which they are a part of may be better understood.

Literature: Writing Your Family Story18Y and up Ann G ThomasHow much do your children and grandchildren know of your family history? Family membership matters and knowing our family’s stories is the manual for membership. It has always been the job of the family’s elders to pass on the stories to the next generation. In this class we learn how to write our stories in fun and interesting ways. If you’ve begun writing your family’s stories or are new to this type of writing and would like to begin, this is a class for you. We will learn how to write about our family history in scenes that will capture the interest of those who come after. We will explore what makes family members come alive on the pages, what details to include, and how our writing will capture and communicate the strengths and values of our family. This class is a gift to ourselves and to the children and grandchildren who follow.
