3Yearbook 2012

Message from the Class of 2012Today, after nearly three decades from the time architects of the World Maritime University laid the foundation for a center of academic excellence in modern maritime affairs, we are happy and proud to be identified among the “crème de la crème” professionals in maritime administration and policy making. The Class of 2012 comprising students from 35 countries across the globe defines the meaning of unity in diversity and professionalism with common purpose. Our stay in this lovely city of Malmo was not without challenges but our collective striving and determination has seen us prevail. Our achievements are gained on the able shoulders of both our resident and visiting professors, for it was through their fountains of knowledge we were molded, thus adequately preparing us for the challenges ahead. To the faculty and staff of our beloved alma mater, the World Maritime University, we owe you an immeasurable debt of gratitude for your magnanimity in nourishing us with practical knowledge and wealth of experience. Therefore, with the knowledge, skills and expertise acquired, we can assure you of our preparedness to contribute to the growth and sustenance of the maritime community in equal proportion as the need arises.

As we leave, our hearts remain with our hospitable hosts, the caring people and the lovely City of Malmö. Specifically, to the Lord Mayor of the City of Malmö and our host families, to you all, we say thanks for the gifts of your time and for opening your homes to us for exchange of culture and values. You own our hearts and can be assured that we are taking back to our families, loved ones and friends the good memories you share with us. Lest we forget, the class of 2012 expresses it felicitations to Mr. Koji Sekimizu, concomitantly Chancellor of the World Maritime University and Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Mr. Chancellor, we are delighted at having you as our Chancellor and being the first graduates under your stewardship. We wish you and your team all the best for your coming years. Further, our profound gratitude goes to the visionaries and founding Chancellors of this noble institution, the Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Srivastatva, the immediate past Chancellor and Secretary General of the IMO, Mr. E.E. Mitropoulos, our very dynamic President Dr. Björn Kjerfve and all past presidents of the World Maritime University. Collectively, you have championed the great cause of building a lasting reservoir of maritime professionals and of strengthening the relationships among people of different race, creed and countries worldwide. Your footprint has indeed contributed to a more developed academic and unified world. To our families and sponsors, we acknowledge the immense contributions you have made in making us what we are today and who we become tomorrow. Had it not been for your moral, social and financial support we would not be where we are today. Your support came at the time it was needed most and words are inadequate to express the extent of our appreciation. Finally, the Class of 2012 wants to record that all that has been done over the past 14 months of study is what it takes to be ready for the great challenge of promoting and sustaining the maritime community for ourselves and generations to come. We say to our professors, sponsors and hosts, as we walk through the solid halls of WMU, that the love of education brought us here and the love of our nations and its people takes us back home. Accordingly, between time and chance our paths will cross again. Thanks to all.

4Yearbook 2012

Message from the ChancellorIt is my great pleasure to be writing this message to the graduating class of the World Maritime University for the first time. The establishment of the University in 1983, by its founding Chancellor, Dr. C. P. Srivastava, was a milestone in the work of the International Maritime Organization, providing for the first time a university where maritime professionals from all over the world could gather to receive the very latest education in maritime affairs and to participate at the cutting edge of maritime research. Now, almost 30 years later, the University is a well-established academic Institution of which you, as graduates, can be justly proud, and of which I am proud to be fourth Chancellor. The World Maritime University plays a vital role in pursuing the aims of the International Maritime Organization: capacity-building is the key to positive change in the maritime industry, be it matters of regulation, security, safety, sustainable development or efficiency of management. The World Maritime University continues to provide the professionals needed to keep the industry on course.Given the fundamental role of shipping in international trade, the sustainable development and growth of the world economy are not possible without sustainable development and growth in the shipping and maritime industries. Through its technical cooperation activities, IMO helps build capacity to enable developing countries to participate fully in maritime activities. This generates wealth, jobs and economic activity not only in the maritime sector but in other areas that rely on maritime trade for access to global markets. The education delivered by WMU ensures its graduates are fully equipped to take a leading role in positive efforts to achieve these objectives.

As you reach the important milestone of your graduation, there are many things that will be going through your minds. Naturally you are all looking forward to returning to your homes, your families and your friends, and I wish you much joy in doing so. I know you are also looking forward to re-joining the maritime industry in your home countries and to implementing the knowledge and procedures you have learned. I also anticipate that you are looking forward to being ambassadors for WMU in recruiting new students to send from your countries, and to looking for financial support from your countries to ensure the future of this wonderful Institution. You will also wish to speak well of the City of Malmö, and its citizens for, whose generosity we are so very grateful. These are all happy tasks. However, there are challenges ahead as well. In these days of social media and easy access to friends all around the world, your WMU colleagues will support you in your endeavours, just as you will support your colleagues in theirs. And here we have the great strength of the World Maritime University: your graduation is not the end of your association with the University and the friends you have made here, but rather the beginning of a new and equally important phase of your career as a WMU graduate. As Chancellor of the University I wish you success in all your endeavours. As Secretary-General of the IMO, let me also say how much I am looking forward to working with you in the future.
