WELCOME! Dear Colleagues, It is time to make your reservations for the 2012 Combined Annual Meeting of the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. We are excited to once again include the Alumni from Baylor University and The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio! We are excited about the opportunities to be presented at this year’s meeting at JW Marriott Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, April 12-15, 2012. Nestled in San Antonio’s Hill Country, the JW Marriott offers a delightful selection of shops and restaurants, as well as many on-site amenities, including restaurants, golf courses and other relaxing activities on the resort proper. Downtown San Antonio is just a few miles away and boasts many cultural and eclectic events and entertainment, such as the Annual Fiesta celebration. Fiesta began in 1891 to honor the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto with a Battle of the Flowers. The first parade featured horse-drawn carriages, bicycles decorated with fresh flowers and floats carrying children dressed as flowers. The Belknap Rifles represented the military and the participants pelted each other with blossoms. The Battle of Flowers was an immediate success and, within a few years, more events were taking place on or near April 21st and the Fiesta tradition was born! Experience San Antonio and get caught in the excitement of Fiesta preparations! Over the past 81 years, the Southwest Society of OMS has provided excellent annual meeting opportunities and this year is no exception. The meeting will kick off on Thursday with Colin S. Bell. DDS, MSD and David M. Grogan, DDS, MSD providing crucial and timely Office Based Anesthesia updates. ACLS recertification is being offered in two separate formats: an online course followed by ACLS skills assessment course on-site on Thursday or completion of the entire course recertification on Sunday. On Friday, the renowned Byrd-Tilson Resident’s Day program will provide an opportunity for us to recognize the best and brightest from training programs in the Southwest region. Additionally, the Board of Directors voted to institute a new award for outstanding presentation by a resident in honor of Robert V. Walker, DDS. Following the evening reception Friday, the BOMSAA and UTHSC-SA Alumni organizations have arranged for a special dinner hosted on site. On Saturday, registrants will have an opportunity to hear our keynote speakers, Lee Walker, DDS, MD and Jay S. Smith, DDS, as they address “Delivering the Promise: Predictable Implant Outcomes”. There are numerous social activities planned including receptions on Thursday and Friday evening, Golf tournament on Friday afternoon (AT&T Canyons Course) and a special tour of the Garcia Art Glass Factory as part of the spouse/companion program. Saturday evening, we will bring our annual meeting to a close with dinner on site of the resort’s beautiful lawn with music entertainment provided by The Phat Kats. We encourage you to begin planning for this exciting weekend and to secure your hotel reservations as well as your meeting registration now. We look forward to seeing you in San Antonio! Sincerely, Douglas P. Sinn, DDS President, SWSOMS

KEYNOTE LECTURE

Delivering the Promise: Predictable Implant Outcomes Lee R. Walker, DDS, MD & Jay S. Smith, DDS Saturday, April 14, 2012 Rehabilitating a patient with a dental implant replacing a non-restorable tooth or missing tooth involves a team to include a restorative doctor, dental laboratory technician and surgeon. The promise to the patient is a lasting restoration within a predetermined cost and treatment timeline. Today’s surgical protocols combine multiple surgical procedures into a single visit. This stacking of procedures reduces treatment time and costs whereby enabling the restorative doctor to more effectively refer patients to the surgeon for implant placement. What is the cost to predictability and the risk tolerance of the patient and dentist to the stacking of procedures? Drs. Walker and Smith will discuss essential elements in delivering the promise to the patient and restoring doctor to include surgical and restorative protocols, biomechanical and aesthetic consideration for achieving appropriate primary stability, expected healing times and outcome statistics when stacking surgical procedures. Forward looking, Drs. Walker and Smith will discuss how they have positioned and implemented digital dentistry into their practices to establish a point of differentiation in the marketplace. Continuing Dental Education Credits: 6 hours At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

1) Know why and when to immediately place an implant into a fresh extraction socket. 2) Know why and how to immediately load an implant 3) Utilize advanced technologies to meet aesthetic demands while increasing productivity 4) Statistical outcome studies in stacking procedures 5) Digital dentistry for the oral surgeon

Lee R. Walker, MD, DDS Dr. Walker received his dental degree from the University of the Pacific, San Francisco, California, and his medical degree and oral and maxillofacial surgery certificate from The University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Gini Garcia’s unique creations are sampled and displayed throughout the JW Marriott Resort & Spa. In 1998, after Ms. Garcia received her B.F.A. in industrial and environmental design, she opened a hot glass design and fabrication center that specializes in the creation of one-of-a-kind blown glass lighting and sculpture, including table-scapes and art for the wall. These creations, made to client specifications, range from the functional to the whimsical for homes, corporate offices, restaurants, and hospitals. Recently, she traveled to Murano, Italy and studied the "Chandelier for the New Millennium." Following the demonstration and time to tour the studio gallery, guests will attend a private luncheon at Azúca before returning to the comforts of the resort.

Companions are invited to join in the fun for a host of activities to make your stay that much more entertaining and exciting! Friday’s program includes a private tour and glass blowing demonstration at the Garcia Art Glass Factory followed by a luncheon at the first Nuevo Latino Restaurant in San Antonio, Azúca, before returning to the resort.
