Why Do Candidates Have to Recertify?• Required for accreditation of certification program

• Exam ‘proves’ level of knowledge

• Recertification ‘proves’ that the candidate is continuing to keep up level of knowledge and gain understanding of new technology/procedures in the field of Gastroenterology

• 100 hours every 5 years is a certification best practice

• Option to ‘prove’ knowledge again by re-testing vs. submitting hours

Recertification Requirements

• Eligibility requirements same as exam> Two years full-time or part-time equivalent> Current RN License> Two signatures for professional qualification form

• Minimum Hour Requirements> 100 Total Hours— 80 GI specific contact hours— 40 of those must be in nursing approved live seminars/workshops

Allowable Contact Hour Credits• Category 1 - Attendance at Nursing CE Approved Seminars

or Workshops- MUST be approved by one of the following:

> The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

> An agency, organization, or educational institution accredited by the American Nurses Association Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) ) or whose continuing educational hours are accepted by the American Nurses Association Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

> A state Board of Nursing (all states included)

> A state nurses' association

* Minimum of 40 GI-specific contact hours must be submitted for Category 1

Allowable Contact Hour Credits• Category 2- Providing presentations at seminars and

workshops approved by an accredited provider

> DOES NOT need to be approved by a nursing organization (may include allied health, academic institution or other approved provider)

• You will receive 3 contact hours for each hour of presentation.

• Necessary documentation includes contact hours certificate and a copy of the program which must include title, date, length of program and approver.

• Each time you repeat the same presentation (up to 2 repeats), you may earn an additional contact hour.

No minimum requirement. May submit a Maximum of 50 contact hours.

• Category 3 -Professional Publications > Contact hours are awarded for authoring articles in professional journals

or chapters in textbooks for health care professionals.

> All authors listed will earn credit.

> 10 contact hours are awarded for each article or chapter.

* No minimum requirement.

Allowable Contact Hour Credits

• Category 4- Academic course work offered by an accredited educational institution.

> Course must be health care-related but need not specifically address nursing.

> Science courses, social sciences courses, statistics and similar topics are acceptable while general education courses such as history, art, music or English are not.

> You must earn a grade of "C" or better to count course work. If audited you will need to submit a copy of your transcript as documentation.

> One semester credit counts as 15 contact hours One quarter credit counts as 10 contact hours.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 20 contact hours

Allowable Contact Hour Credits

• Category 5 -Continuing Education, Independent Home Study courses offered by an accredited contact hour provider.

> Courses must be specific to nursing practice, nursing research or nursing management. To be acceptable, contact hours MUST be approved by one of the following.— The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)__ An agency, organization, or educational institution accredited by the American

Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) ) or whose continuing educational hours are accepted by the American Nurses Association Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).;

__ A state Board of Nursing (all states included);__ A state nurses' association

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 60 contact hours

• Category 6 - Participation in the ABCGN Item Writers Workshop.

> These contact hour credits are GI-specific.

Allowable Contact Hour Credits

• Category 7 - CME Credit

> Allied health education seminars, workshops, and home study courses. Continuing Medical Education (CME) offerings approved by the:

— American Medical Association (or one of its affiliates or approved providers)

— American Osteopathic Association (or one of its affiliates or approved providers)

— Courses approved by accredited pharmacy, hospital administration or similar providers.

— CME, pharmacy and hospital administration seminars and workshops, while worthwhile, do not replace nursing contact hours for the purpose of recertifying in a specialty nursing field.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 30 contact hours

Allowable Contact Hour Credits

• Category 8 - Nursing Research Projects

> Up to 20 contact hours awarded per research project

> Candidate must submit either a published manuscript or proof the manuscript has been accepted for publication or validation by a panel of experts as documentation of research work. This research project may only be submitted once for contact hours and may not be used in a second recertification.

> The work must be an independently funded project designed to increase the nursing knowledge base or improve patient care and/or safety.

> If the project is specific to GI, it can be included in the 80 GI-specific hours.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 40 contact hours

Allowable Contact Hour Credits• Category 9- Poster Presentation

> Candidate may submit a maximum 10 contact hours in this category as either GI Specific or Non-GI Specific.

> Education Poster qualifies for 2 contact hours Research Poster qualifies for 3 contact hours.

> Posters are required to have an Educational/Teaching or Educational/Research component to them. A photo copy of the poster must be submitted along with the Verification Form for Poster Presentations.

> Credit will be allowed only for the initial poster presentation during the 5 year recertification period. All authors of the poster qualify for contact hours.

* No minimum requirement May submit a maximum of 10 contact hours

Allowable Contact Hour Credits• Category 10 – Precepting

— Five (5) Contact hours will be awarded for 80 hours of precepting an RN, LPN, or GI Tech within a GI setting.

— A GI work setting is defined as working in a Gastroenterologist or Hepatologist office, or a GI Unit in the hospital, ambulatory or surgery/endoscopy center.

— Contact hours cannot be split for partial orientation.

— Must include the Verification of Professional Involvement form with application.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 5 GI specific contact hours

Allowable Contact Hour Credits• Category 11 – Involvement in ABCGN/SGNA/ or

SIGNEA

— Three (3) contact hours per year will be awarded for involvement in these GI focused professional organizations as an officer, committee/task force member at the regional or national level or as an appointed publication editor/reviewer.

— Non GI Specific contact hours will not be awarded.

— Item Review Committee and Item Writers Panel members see Category 12.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 15 GI specific contact hours

• Category 12 – ABCGN Test Development

— Up to twelve (12) GI Specific Contact hours per year will be awarded for participation on the Item Review Committee and/or Item Writers Panel.

* No minimum requirement. May submit a maximum of 48 GI specific contact hours

• Category 13 – Involvement in other GI related organizations or publications

— Two (2) contact hours per year will be awarded for involvement in these GI focused professional organizations as an officer, committee/task force member at the regional or national level or as an appointed publication editor/reviewer.

GI Specific Contact Hours

• A GI Specific contact hour should provide a knowledge or skill that is essential to providing care to a patient with a gastrointestinal disease or problem.

• The information imparted should enable the Gastroenterology nurse to anticipate the care and interventions needed to treat the patient; provide the necessary care and interventions, and supply follow up care and teaching.

• GI specific courses identify the knowledge that the certified gastroenterology nurse is required to know to stay current in the field of gastroenterology.

• Non-GI specific courses may relate to gastroenterology, but do not address the science of nursing or medicine as it relates to the field of gastroenterology and digestive disease.

GI Specific Contact HoursAspects of the science of gastroenterology/hepatology include:

• Anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology • Diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology/hepatology

procedures• Diagnostic tests which relate to

gastroenterology/hepatologyExample: pathology specimen collection specific to endoscopy procedures or to GI diagnosis

• Research and technology in gastroenterology/hepatology• Infection control as it relates to

gastroenterology/hepatology• Environmental safety as it relates to

gastroenterology/hepatology• Standards of practice as it relates to

gastroenterology/hepatologyExample: Standards as they relate to SGNA Standards and Guidelines, SGNA Position Statements

• Disease Processes that effect or are affected by the GI systems

• GI related radiological proceduresExample: ERCP, TIPS

• Radiology use and safety in the GI Lab• Patient teaching related to gastroenterology/hepatology• Sedation and monitoring including Capnography• Cleaning, Disinfection and Reprocessing of equipment and

supplies

• Universal PrecautionsExample: Use of PPE during procedures and reprocessing, care of infectious disease patients, handling of body fluid/tissue samples.

• Standards of Nursing Practice: OSHA, Joint Commission, AAAHCExample: Reducing Infection Risks Associated with Medical Equipment in the GI setting, Devices, and Supplies

• Electro surgery/cautery usage and safety• Laser training and safety as related to GI/endoscopy• Pharmacology as it pertains to digestive disease• Nutritional therapy and enteral therapy as it pertains to

digestive disease• Eating disorders and their effects • Surgical Procedures related to gastroenterology

Example: Surgery, Post-Operative complications, ulcers/strictures, issues with absorption/malabsorption, endoscopic issues post surgery as in change of anatomy. Bariatric surgery, Gastric Bypass, Gastrectomy would be types of surgeries. NOTES: Natural Orifice Trans Endoscopic Surgery if specific to GI

• Performance Improvement related to the GI LabExample: scope culturing, scope reconciliation

• Holistic Care as it relates to the GI patient• Legal Issues as they relate to the GI/Endoscopy setting• Competencies as they relate to the GI nurse/staff• AIDS/HIV as it relates to GI/Endoscopy

GI Specific Approval Process

• ABCGN will review programs and determine GI specific contact hours. There is a $35 fee for program review.

• Programs are submitted to ABCGN via the electronic GI Specific Application posted at http://www.abcgn.org/Resources/GISpecificHoursApproval.aspx

Supporting documents are uploaded with the application (EXCEPTION: If you have already submitted your program to SGNA for contract hour approval, you do not need to upload the documents. You do need to fill out the application and submit your payment.)

• Please allow 30 days for processing and review of your program.

Overview of Recertification Process

• All certificants expire 12/31 on the year of expiration (no longer May/October)

• Certificants are required to submit their application online; do not upload certificates.

• If audited candidates will be required to submit backup materials to demonstrate requirements have been met

• Fee to recertify is $350 for SGNA members; $435 for non-members

Overview of Recertification Process

• Allowed to submit at any time during year of expiration

• Either 15th or 30th of month based on date of submission will be date you can start collecting for next recertification period

• If you have enough contact hours, it is in your best interest to submit as early in the year as possible

If Audited…

• Will be notified that you have been randomly selected for audit

• Will be required to submit all back-up materials within 30 days of notification

• Audit committee will review within 2-3 weeks and will contact you with any required follow-up

Submit Per Year Option

• Every certificant receives ‘scorecard’ during first quarter of year:> How many hours have been submitted> How much money has been paid> Balance of hours/money with due date

• Once submitted, the approved credits can not be ‘audited’ in subsequent years

• Good way to know where you stand and not risk losing any hours
